A team of researchers recently discovered a massive reservoir of hydrogen in a mine in Albania. The reservoir could be a potential source of clean hydrogen energy. But recently, a team of researchers uncovered a massive reservoir of hydrogen buried in a mine in Albania that could serve as a source of clean, hydrogen energy . If the hydrogen in the mine can be safely harnessed, the researchers believe it could be a key energy source. One of the initiative's goals is for the hubs to produce "more than three million metric tons of clean hydrogen per year," about one-third of the 2030 US clean hydrogen production goal.

Officials estimate the hydrogen production credits can deliver $140 billion and 700,000 jobs by 2030. Administration officials estimate the hydrogen production credits will deliver $140 billion in revenue and 700,000 jobs by 2030 — and help the US produce 50 million metric tons of hydrogen by 2050. Firms that produce hydrogen using fossil fuels get less. The Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Association includes more than 100 members involved in hydrogen production, distribution and use, including vehicle manufacturers, industrial gas companies, renewable developers and nuclear plant operators. Some of the money will flow to regional networks, or "hubs," of hydrogen producers, consumers and infrastructure that the Biden administration is also trying to kickstart with a $7 billion program.

CNN —Often referred to as a “miracle material,” graphene is one million times thinner than a single human hair and stronger than steel. The two-dimensional carbon material, made from single layers of graphite, a material mined from the ground, is extremely lightweight, conductive, and flexible, and has the potential to deliver transformational technologies across industries, from electronics to transportation. Now, researchers at Khalifa University in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are exploring another use for graphene: producing drinking water. That’s where graphene comes in: Arafat is working on a graphene-enhanced membrane that could make the process more efficient and cheaper. “Even in small quantities, these graphene materials significantly improve the performance of the membranes in terms of their water production,” he adds.

London CNN —The German government is putting €7.5 billion ($8 billion) of taxpayer cash on the table to secure the rescue of troubled wind turbine-maker Siemens Energy, a company of vital importance to the country’s energy transition. The deal to “secure the company” has been in the works for several weeks, the ministry said, noting that the federal government had been “in intensive contact” with Siemens Energy, Siemens and private lenders. The firm, which had revenue of about €29 billion ($32 billion) in its last fiscal year, also makes gas-powered turbines and electrolyzers for hydrogen energy production, among a raft of other products. It needs the financial guarantees to deliver on its €110 billion ($119 billion) pipeline of orders, according to the ministry. “We are pleased with the German government’s clear support for Siemens Energy and the commitment to the rapid implementation of projects to make the energy transition a success,” a spokesperson for Siemens Energy told CNN.

White hydrogen, a newly identified hydrogen source, could eliminate the need for lab production. Because it doesn't require any of these energy-intensive processes, climate experts say white hydrogen could be our saving grace, according to CNN. It's also cheaper: white hydrogen is estimated to cost about $1 per kilogram to produce, while green hydrogen costs about $6 per kilogram, per CNN. AdvertisementAdvertisementSeveral start-ups are already exploring how to commercialize white hydrogen, CNN reported. Ellis told CNN that speed is vital to ensure white hydrogen can help curb the climate crisis.

“This was not a real surprise for us,” Pironon told CNN; it’s common to find small amounts near the surface of a borehole. Arguably, the catalyst for the current interest in white hydrogen can be traced to this West African country. White hydrogen deposits have been found throughout the world, including in the US, eastern Europe, Russia, Australia, Oman, as well as France and Mali. “Natural hydrogen is a solution which will allow us to get get to speed” on climate action, he said. Shell will cut 200 positions within its low-carbon solutions unit in 2024, a spokesperson confirmed to CNBC on Wednesday. The company's low-carbon division helps spearhead Shell's transition to clean energy including hydrogen, given its pledge to become a "net-zero emissions energy business" by 2050. In the meantime, according to the spokesperson, Shell is planning $10-15 billion of low-carbon energy investment over the next two years, which will include biofuels, hydrogen, carbon capture and electric vehicle charging. Last July, the company announced its investment in the creation of one of Europe's largest hydrogen energy plants. The question of how Big Oil companies like Shell can fit into a clean energy future is existential for its business.

The White House calls clean hydrogen “essential to achieving the president’s vision of a strong clean energy economy" and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. by 2050. Some environmentalists call hydrogen a false solution because it frequently relies on natural gas or other fossil fuels as feedstocks. Among those selected were the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub, based in West Virginia, and the Philadelphia-based Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub. Other projects selected include the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems in California, which will produce hydrogen from renewable energy and biomass. Big fossil fuel companies, renewable energy developers and researchers in university and government labs are involved, too.

The proposed tax credit, 45V, is meant to turbocharge the production of low-emissions hydrogen. "The IRA's section 45V production tax credit is the most generous clean hydrogen subsidy in the world," Jesse Jenkins, professor of macro-scale energy systems at Princeton University, told CNBC. John Macdougall | Afp | Getty ImagesThe adjudication of the hydrogen tax credit has become about more than just the hydrogen tax credit, too. The amount of the hydrogen tax credit, which is available for 10 years, depends on the emissions generated in making hydrogen. If hydrogen is produced without releasing any carbon emissions, the tax credit is maxed out at $3 per kilogram of hydrogen.
