Conservatives are interpreting the court’s ruling broadly, and since last summer, they have used it to attack racial-justice programs outside the field of higher education. These challenges to racial-justice programs will have a lasting impact on the nation’s ability to address the vast disparities that Black people experience. Though the civil rights movement is celebrated and commemorated as a proud period in American history, it faced an immediate backlash. The progressive activists who advanced civil rights for Black Americans argued that in a society that used race against Black Americans for most of our history, colorblindness is a goal. In the affirmative-action decision, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., writing for the majority, embraced this idea of colorblindness, saying: “Eliminating racial discrimination means eliminating all of it.”

A former prime minister of Australia has stirred a storm of outrage by describing colonization as “the luckiest thing that happened to this country” and praising Britain for being a better overlord than other nations ahead of a contentious referendum on Aboriginal representation in the country. “I do hold the view that the luckiest thing that happened to this country was being colonized by the British,” the former prime minister, John Howard, 84, told The Australian newspaper in an interview this week. “Not that they were perfect by any means, but they were infinitely more successful and beneficent colonizers than other European countries.”Mr. Howard’s remarks were denounced on social media, with some people calling him “ignorant,” “racist” and “evil.”Australia is no longer a British colony, even as it retains King Charles III as its head of state, and Aboriginal Australians continue to face the harrowing effects of colonialism, including significant hardship and discrimination.

Friday’s debut of “No Hard Feelings,” a sex work romcom that doesn’t want to admit to its own subgenre, is very much of our era. Noah Berlatsky Noah BerlatskyThe Jennifer Lawrence vehicle from Sony Pictures revolves around a sex worker who, like the film, doesn’t want to admit what she’s doing. In sex worker romcoms, you’re supposed to be scandalized at the sordidness — but in a fun way. Anti-sex and anti-porn advocates have put a lot of effort into (falsely) conflating sex work and sex trafficking. Every film, sex worker romcom or otherwise, doesn’t have to be enthusiastically political, or, for that matter, sexual.

What was it like working with Lin-Manuel Miranda on new songs for “The Little Mermaid”? I gave him a little Caribbean tune thinking he would lyricize that, and in fact, he rapped over it! In 1997, David Horn, now the executive producer of PBS’s “Great Performances” series, told The New York Times, “When there’s a Sondheim musical, everyone refers to it as a Sondheim musical. When it’s something Alan has done, they refer to it as a Disney musical.” Do you still mind your shows being known as Disney musicals? I sometimes would have a little resistance to simply being characterized as “Disney composer Alan Menken” because I already had a huge hit with “Little Shop of Horrors” before I went to Disney.
“I mean he feels like he is losing a father. But I’m like, no, you’re gaining a different father and a brother.”Like McConaughey, Harrelson recalled a conversation with “Ma Mac, Matthew’s legitimate mother,” when she told them that she “knew…” Harrelson’s father. We were in Greece watching the US team win the World Cup and I mentioned something about regrets,” Harrelson said. Harrelson and McConaughey will star in an upcoming Apple TV+ series, in a fictionalized portrayal of their friendship. “I can’t tell whether it’s just, like, their sort of slow Southern and Texas drawls or I think Texas figures in there somewhere,” Theroux said.

London CNN —Two-time Oscar-winner Emma Thompson has admitted she was “utterly blind” to her ex-husband Kenneth Branagh’s on-set relationships with other actresses and was left devastated when she found out. Helena Bonham Carter and Kenneth Branagh dated for five years. “I was utterly, utterly blind to the fact that he had relationships with other women on set,” Thompson told interviewer John Lahr. “What I learned was how easy it is to be blinded by your own desire to deceive yourself.”Branagh and Bonham Carter went on to have a five-year relationship. Reflecting on her life with Wise, Thompson said: “I’ve learned more from my second marriage just by being married.
And the intent of this comedy-thriller is showing how wrong he can be. For such a committed Halloween skeptic, Howard clearly hasn’t scoped out Bridge Hollow very well. It’s a place that loses its otherwise decorous mind as it approaches Oct. 31. She’s tired of Howard, the intellectual dictator, pushing her toward science all the time. She prefers to dabble in the supernatural, which means she’s delighted to meet up with members of the Bridge Hollow Paranormal Society—all three of them—who in turn are delighted to meet the new resident of the old Hawthorne House.
