A decade ago, Millennium Management managed $21.1 billion and had 18 senior people — all a part of the executive committee — listed on its website. Now the $64 billion multistrategy manager has 47 names on its leadership page split among divisions like the relatively new Office of the CIO. Executive teams are often just a firm's founder and a few trusted lieutenants. Many departures from the firm's top level have been executives launching their own funds or joining Millennium colleagues starting their own funds. Michael Gelband and Hyung Lee, who once ran fixed income and equities, respectively, brought the business-development pro Peter Hornick and the risk executive Dev Joneja with them when they launched ExodusPoint.

After a months-long public campaign that began shortly after Mayor Brandon Johnson (right) took office in May, advocates reached a deal with restaurant industry lobbyists to phase out the tipped-minimum wage over five years. "The closest pending victory is in Chicago," said Saru Jayaraman, founder and president of the advocacy group One Fair Wage. Three-fourths said they would reduce the number of tipped workers on their payroll, and nearly half said the cuts would be significant. The $9.48 an hour wage most workers got cost the restaurant $5,449.61, he said, a fraction of the $17,198 in tips workers earned. That's one reason why the restaurant industry engaged in a kind of bidding war against itself, to find a compromise solution that politicians like Alderman Carlos Ramirez Rosa, Johnson's floor manager in the City Council, would buy.

☆ New York's first legal recreational marijuana shop opens

The dispensary was opened in New York City's East Village by Housing Works, a non-profit organization that fights homelessness and AIDS. The non-profit was among the first 36 groups or individuals that the state awarded with a marijuana retail license last month. Retailers can also only sell marijuana that licensed New York producers grew and processed. Alexander, the state marijuana director, said local and state law enforcement have been educating gray-market vendors on the licensing rules, following up with cease-and-desist letters and, more recently, seizing merchandise. New York's marijuana sales will be taxed at 13.5%, revenue that will go to schools, public housing, addiction services and mental health services.
