The logo of Australian casino giant Crown Resorts Ltd adorns the hotel and casino complex in Melbourne, Australia, June 13, 2017. Shares of Crown soared 11% in early trading before settling up 7.5% by mid-afternoon, against a flat overall market (.AXJO). Earlier this year, the NSW inquiry led to the freezing of Crown's licence for a new A$2.1 billion casino tower in Sydney. A third inquiry into Crown's remaining casino, in Perth city, is ongoing. As with the other two, the Melbourne inquiry heard detailed accounts of Crown enabling money laundering and failing to act on regulatory concerns.

As my friend said, "The way you find out what's cool is someone cooler than you telling you it's cool." But Spotify, along with Netflix and many other digital products that provide personalized media recommendations, failed to realize what my friend already knew: Cool recommendations come from cool people. We're not waiting for anyone to tell us what's cool, Spotify implies. Users don't encounter algorithmic recommendations in a vacuum; their preferences have already been socially shaped at the moment they begin streaming. In the most algorithmically-mediated digital environments, like Netflix, there's nobody cool around to tell you what's cool — just machines mirroring your own past behavior back to you.

The vetting procedures and the deliberations over the fate of the evacuees were described by nearly a dozen officials on condition of anonymity. Former President Donald J. Trump claimed to Fox News last month that there were “absolutely” terrorists and “very bad people” among the evacuees. This week, some House Republicans mounted fresh claims that the Biden administration is bringing tens of thousands of Afghan evacuees to the United States without screening them. Gen. Glen D. VanHerck, who leads the U.S. Northern Command, has told reporters that the crime rate among the evacuees has been lower than the American average. Many faced particular danger because they had worked for the United States during the conflict and were trying to get out with their families.

REUTERS/Wolfgang RattayBRUSSELS, Oct 21 (Reuters) - EU leaders on Thursday will debate their response to soaring energy prices, which have exposed familiar rifts over the bloc's climate change goals and divided countries on whether the price crunch warrants an overhaul of EU energy market rules. read moreMost EU countries have already drawn up emergency action plans to shield consumers from the price spike, including energy tax cuts and subsidies for poorer households, and on Thursday leaders will encourage others to follow suit. Countries including Spain, Italy and Greece want the EU to respond with regulatory changes. They propose joint gas buying among EU countries to form strategic reserves, and decoupling European electricity prices from the cost of gas-fuelled generation. The Commission said gas prices were expected to stabilise at a lower level by April.

The soft-spoken Hollywood firebrand wonders where the executives with both creative and commercial instincts have gone. Robinov, who is working with Ben Affleck, Robert Rodriguez, and others on a handful of new projects, said Hollywood can be a great business again. The former Warner Bros. film chief exited in 2013 and founded independent film and TV production company Studio 8. It takes more than money to attract talent, he noted — given the variety of deep-pocketed tech players now operating in Hollywood, talent goes where it can find the most welcoming environment. "The current cycle is streaming, streaming, streaming," and "consolidation, consolidation," as evidenced by CAA's acquisition of rival talent agency ICM.

The first time Adam Granduciel hinted at a possible career change, he tossed it off as a humorous aside. “Basically my whole family are educators,” he said in a video interview last month from his Los Angeles home. Who knows?”The second time — a week later, calling from a parked car outside the warehouse where he had been rehearsing with his bandmates — he dug deeper. Like, is this the last record?” It was a thought exercise more than a declaration of intent, but striking to hear from a presumed lifer at the top of his game. By conventional measures, Granduciel — the 42-year-old frontman and primary creative force behind the War on Drugs, a once-scrappy indie band that he started in Philadelphia in 2005 — is a modern-day rock star.

A statement of intent to run was filed with state authorities using an email address associated with Watkins. “I hope I never recover from this,” William Shatner said after the capsule set down in scrub near Van Horn, Texas. “I hope I can maintain what I feel now, I don’t want to lose it,” he told Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos. I watched the launch and touchdown on TV, was surprised to be moved, and near the end walked toward the screen to miss nothing. I used to do that when “The Sopranos” first aired, hoping there were 20 minutes left and not eight.

The meeting with Kenyatta at the White House marked Biden's first as president with an African leader. The United States and Kenya have long cooperated on economic and security initiatives including counterterrorism. Biden said the 17 million doses will be in addition to 50 million the United States has already donated to the African Union. The donation of the vaccine doses will help the African Union's own regional procurement of J&J via the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust, the White House said. The 17 million doses of J&J are available for delivery immediately and will be delivered to the African Union in the coming weeks, the White House said.

It will mark the second of what Blue Origin hopes will be many space tourism launches, carrying wealthy customers and thrill seekers to the edge of space. On Blue Origin's website, it states the following criteria for passengers:You must be 18 years of age or older. Blue Origin passengers could experience up to 5.5Gs, which can also make it difficult to breathe or move their hands and arms. The essay states that many of its signatories "say they would not fly on a Blue Origin vehicle." But Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic also plan to parlay their technologies into other ventures.

As one of four passengers selected for the flight, Shatner, at age 90, is poised to become the oldest person ever to venture into space. Demonstrating safety and lowering ticket costs are crucial in tapping a nascent space tourism market that, according to UBS, could reach an annual value of $3 billion in a decade. Blue Origin, founded by Bezos in 2000, promised to investigate any claims of misconduct and defended its safety record, calling New Shepard "the safest space vehicle ever designed or built." Branson inaugurated his space tourism service on July 11, riding along on a suborbital flight with six others aboard his company's VSS Unity rocket plane. SpaceX debuted its space tourism business by flying the first all-civilian crew to reach Earth's orbit in a three-day flight ending Sept. 18.

One of Hollywood’s senior statesmen announced his retirement on Monday, adding to a startling changing of the guard at the Walt Disney Company. Alan F. Horn, 78, will step down on Dec. 31 as chief creative officer of Disney Studios Content, a division that includes Marvel, Lucasfilm, Searchlight Pictures, Pixar, 20th Century Studios and Disney’s traditional animation and live-action movie operations. “It’s never easy to say goodbye to a place you love, which is why I’ve done it slowly,” Mr. Horn said in a statement. “But with Alan Bergman leading the way, I’m confident the incredible Studios team will keep putting magic out there for years to come.” Mr. Bergman, a steady hand at Disney’s movie division since 1996, succeeded Mr. Horn as chairman of Disney Studios Content last year. Mr. Bergman, 55, called Mr. Horn “one of the most important mentors I’ve ever had.”Mr. Horn’s retirement adds to brain drain at the world’s largest entertainment company as a new generation of executives rise to power — led by Bob Chapek, who became chief executive last year.

William Shatner's much-anticipated trip to the edge of space will have to wait a day because high winds in west Texas prompted spaceflight company Blue Origin to postpone the voyage. Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the launch from the spaceport in Van Horn, Texas, will now take place at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Blue Origin said in a statement Sunday. "As part of today's Flight Readiness Review, the mission operations team confirmed the vehicle has met all mission requirements and astronauts began their training today," Blue Origin said. Amazon's executive chairman, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin, tweeted that Shatner is described by the word "Legend." In July Bezos himself took the company's official inaugural trip to space alongside his brother and two other people.

In our research, we define infrastructure as the most efficient mechanism through which a society stores or distributes value. Schools are the most efficient medium to distribute knowledge, once there’s demand for workers with knowledge and skills. In Afghanistan, there was too much infrastructure and too little value, as the recent report from the Special Investigator General for Afghanistan Reconstruction makes clear. Two hospitals that cost $18.5 million to build operated at costs higher than what the Afghanistan government could sustain. Ryan Crocker, former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, said, “The biggest lesson learned for me is, don’t do major infrastructure projects” in Afghanistan.

The Last Jew of Afghanistan is gone, and everyone is glad to be rid of him. Zebulon Simentov, Afghanistan’s only remaining Jew, escaped three weeks ago after refusing early opportunities to flee Kabul amid this summer’s American withdrawal. He described his experience with the Last Jew as “two weeks of being a shrink.” Mr. Simentov’s wife finally received her divorce just this week. The story of Mr. Simentov, whose name incongruously means “good omen,” was primarily presented as a moment of lightness amid the horrors of the Taliban takeover. This was also true when Mr. Simentov appeared in the news in the early years of the American occupation nearly 20 years ago.
