CNN —Toward the end of its 35th season, “The Simpsons” made a move that rankled some fans: It killed a longtime resident of Springfield. I would say under 10,” said Matt Selman, sardonic showrunner of “The Simpsons,” in an interview with CNN. There are around 16 writers per season, typically made up of 22 episodes, though this season has just 18 due to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes. Last month, Sosthand won a Writers Guild Award for the episode, beating out three other nominees from the “Simpsons” writers room. It’s nice that their hard work has been noticed, Selman said, but critical appraisal of “The Simpsons” is always in flux.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Another private U.S. company took a shot at the moon Thursday, launching a month after a rival’s lunar lander missed its mark and came crashing back. NASA, the main sponsor with experiments on board, is hoping for a successful moon landing next week as it seeks to jumpstart the lunar economy ahead of astronaut missions. SpaceX’s Falcon rocket blasted off in the middle of the night from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, dispatching Intuitive Machines’ lunar lander on its way to the moon, 230,000 miles (370,000 kilometers) away. If all goes well, a touchdown attempt would occur Feb. 22, after a day in lunar orbit. Only five countries — the U.S., Russia, China, India and Japan — have scored a lunar landing and no private business has yet done so.

The Amazon Spheres, part of the Amazon headquarters campus, right, in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, U.S., on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021. Three Amazon staffers sued their employer on Monday alleging gender discrimination and accusing the company of retaliation after they complained of "chronic pay inequity issues." He added that Amazon doesn't tolerate discrimination in the workplace, and it investigates all reported incidents of such behavior. The complaint was filed by Outten & Golden, the same New York law firm that represented a Google executive in her successful gender bias lawsuit, as well as Uber software engineers who sued the company for gender and racial discrimination. Amazon has faced allegations of gender and racial discrimination from tech and corporate workers in recent years.

The FTC sued in Amazon in federal court in Seattle, alleging that "Amazon has knowingly duped millions of consumers into unknowingly enrolling in Amazon Prime." The FTC said Amazon used "manipulative, coercive or deceptive user-interface designs known as 'dark patterns' to trick consumers into enrolling in automatically renewing Prime subscriptions." The FTC said Amazon Prime is the world's largest subscription program, generating $25 billion in revenue annually. Consumers who attempted to cancel Prime were faced with multiple labyrinthine steps to accomplish the task of cancelling, according to the complaint. The FTC complaint said Amazon used the term "Iliad Flow" to describe the process it began in 2016, referencing Homer's epic poem about the lengthy Trojan war.

The FTC had been investigating sign-up and cancellation processes for Amazon's Prime program since March 2021. Tensions flared between Amazon and the FTC when the agency sought to have CEO Andy Jassy and founder Jeff Bezos testify on the company's Prime practices. Amazon argued the request would be unduly and burdensome, which the FTC rejected. The cancellation process is also difficult to navigate and designed to deter consumers from ending their Prime subscription, the FTC alleged. The complaint marks the third lawsuit the FTC has filed against Amazon in the last month.

Here are the highlights:Amazon called the difficult cancellation process the "Iliad" in reference to Homer's epic poem, as Insider previously reported. The suit describes the Iliad process as "Prime's Four-Page, Six-Click, Fifteen-Option Iliad Cancellation Process" because it takes that many steps to cancel. Amazon has two ways to upsell Amazon Prime to customers: interstitials and non-interstitials. It's equally difficult to cancel Prime on a mobile device, involving an 8-page, 8-click minimum process, the FTC investigation found. Amazon failed to "provide simple mechanisms for a consumer to stop recurring charges" for the Prime membership.
