Designed and engineered in collaboration with the Italian race car manufacturer Dallara, it’s low and wide with an enormous rear wing and a large vertical rudder. For the commission, which marks the 20th BMW Art Car, Mehretu chose to adapt one of her most famous works: The painting “Everywhen,” which is now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The first woman to take on a BMW Art Car was South African artist Esther Mahlangu, who in 1991 painted a 525i sedan. In 1996, Holzer covered a BMW Le Mans race car in the words “Protect Me From What I Want,” among other provocative phrases. Esther Mahlangu's 'Art Car' featured the bold colors and geometric patterns used in the traditional arts and crafts of the Southern Ndebele people.

The class of 2024 is facing a tough job market. Hiring has slowed across the U.S., and entry-level jobs are getting more competitive in the wake of white-collar layoffs. Tai Walker, a senior at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, started her job search in March 2024 and has submitted over 100 applications. Walker says she's researching artificial intelligence and other tech boot camps to broaden her skill set and increase her job prospects. Even though some entry-level jobs have gotten harder to land, industries experiencing staffing shortages like education and construction are still hiring new college grads.

Jenny Holzer Shines New Light in Dark Places

Thirty-five years after she first set the Guggenheim’s rotunda ablaze with an electronic text racing along its spiral ramp, Jenny Holzer is reprising the installation, and turning up the heat. “Light Line,” a career-spanning exhibition, presents a newly updated LED sign which, together with other recent work, illuminates changes in political language and its modes of delivery unimaginable in 1989. The targets of the texts Holzer wrote between the late 1970s and 2001 — variously excerpted and re-sequenced for the new sign — range broadly. In the newer, non-electronic work in this exhibition, she keeps a viselike grip on threats to democracy. A Midwesterner by birth, born at midcentury, she is self-deprecating, plain-spoken and armed with a wicked gift for irony.

The unemployment rate rose to 3.9% last month, the highest level in two years. AdvertisementGen Z and millennials entering the job market or in the early stages of their careers are facing a much tougher job market than in recent years, and many are adjusting their expectations for a dream career as the hiring landscape worsens. Despair about the ailing job market looks most acute among recent graduates, or students quickly approaching their graduation dates. AdvertisementOnly 44% of workers under 30 said they were "very satisfied" with their job, according to a 2023 Pew Research study. The job market boomed during the pandemic, with the unemployment rate going from 6.4% at the beginning of 2021 to 3.5% at the end of 2022.

That sudden volatility highlights something that we often write about in Before the Bell: the major mismatch between policymaker and investor expectations for interest rate cuts this year. Federal Reserve officials, including Chair Jerome Powell, have repeatedly said they envision at most three rate cuts in 2024. Wall Street, meanwhile, has ignored those warnings and has opted to practice unflinching optimism instead. It’s not the first time they’ve had to learn an important lesson: Don’t fight the Fed. Bad for the markets, good for the Fed: Markets clearly don’t often take kindly to higher-for-longer interest rates, which can negatively impact earnings and stock prices.

While many industries have adopted the practice, tipping is most entrenched in the restaurant industry, where workers rely on gratuities to make up much of their wages. Here's how tipping came to America in the first place, and how it became institutionalized in food services, specifically. But the company that "really institutionalized" tipping, Zagor says, was the Pullman Company, which built and operated railroad cars. But when restaurants were added in 1966, they weren't covered under the typical minimum wage as other industries ultimately were. 'The whole thing is shifted onto the customer'These days, tipping is deeply embedded in the restaurant industry.

For former President Donald Trump, all political signs point to a rematch with President Joe Biden, who defeated Trump in 2020 and increasingly has targeted Trump in his campaign ads. Photo: Edwin Remsberg/AlamyCould there be a more opportune moment for an authoritative book on the border crisis? No, not that border, and not today’s crisis, but the dispute that once raged over where Pennsylvania ended and Maryland began. That colonial-era quarrel cooled only when the expanse was surveyed and mapped in the 1760s by the Englishmen Charles Mason (1728-86) and Jeremiah Dixon (1733-79). MARTIGNY, Switzerland, Sept 26 (Reuters) - St. Bernard dogs, one of Switzerland's national symbols that were internationally renowned for helping in alpine rescues, are now saving people in other ways. "The dogs work in hospitals, in nursing homes with senior citizens. They are descendants of Barry I, a St. Bernard credited with saving the lives of more than 40 people on the Great St. Bernard Pass in the early 19th century. "They have a great sense of smell," said Anne Hölzer, in charge of training at Barry Foundation. "It's a very strong symbol of Switzerland," Zollinger said.

That's in part because wage growth hasn't been keeping up. According to Bankrate's analysis, however, three industries' wage growth outpaced inflation. That was retail, leisure and hospitality and accommodation and food services. Here's why they fared better than other industries and whether or not experts think, big picture, inflation-proof industries actually exist. But, at that point, workers didn't want to come back to retail, leisure and hospitality and accommodation and food services.

Income inequality has narrowed in the US, with low-wage workers receiving raises during the pandemic. This trend has been tapering off, though labor market competition has benefited wage growth. This was thanks to pre-pandemic minimum wage legislation, coupled with higher raises for lower wage workers in the tumultuous years that followed. Although low-wage workers have slightly narrowed the gap, corporate profits have boomed, allowing those at the very top to stay separated from the rest. In June 2022, low-wage workers saw 7.2% wage growth from the prior year, falling to 6.5% in June 2023.

Out-of-sync U.S. stocks hide market risks

Investors expect stocks to move increasingly out of sync as shown by the Cboe 3-Month Implied Correlation Index (.COR3M), which measures the 3-month expected average correlation across the top 50 value-weighted S&P 500 stocks. The last time 3-month implied correlation got this low was in early 2018, just before the February 2018 urge in market volatility dubbed 'Volmageddon.' Much of today's low stock market correlation has to do with the gulf in performance between a handful of mega caps driving the benchmark index higher and the rest of the market. "You have this view in the market that this is a stock picker's market because correlation is low," EAB Investment Group's Holzer said. "Because correlations are so low, index options have gotten incredibly cheap," said Daniel Kirsch, head of options at Piper Sandler said.

Gary Vaynerchuk predicts that AI software like ChatGPT will eliminate many jobs. He's optimistic about workers' ability to rally and adapt to AI, or create new roles. That's been true to an extent about previous types of automation, but AI looks likely to impact a broader demographic of workers. Like Vaynerchuk points out, there's some reason to be optimistic long-term about the job shake ups technology can cause. But Vaynerchuk is more convinced that AI represents the status quo for automation.
