The Sovereign Grant, which last year was worth 86.3 million pounds ($111 million), is typically based on 15% of Crown Estate profits but has been temporarily increased to 25% to pay for extensive refurbishment work at Buckingham Palace. However, new deals for offshore wind farms struck in January are expected to see Crown Estate profits surge by 900 million pound a year, and Charles had indicated he wanted this extra money to go the wider good. On Thursday, the Treasury said the Sovereign Grant next year would be cut to 12% of Crown Estates' profits, meaning it will remain at 86.3 million pounds but will be 24 million pounds less than if the rate had not changed. Charles and Camilla were crowned in London's Westminster Abbey in May in front of about 100 world leaders in Britain's biggest ceremonial event for seven decades. The 74-year-old succeeded his mother as king of the United Kingdom and 14 other realms when Queen Elizabeth died in September. Scotland will celebrate the accession of King Charles III with its own festivities on Wednesday. “Scotland will welcome the new King and Queen in July with a series of events to mark the Coronation. There the Scottish Crown Jewels will be presented to the King. The crown was first worn by James V at the coronation of Queen Mary of Guise in 1540. A 21-gun salute from the 12 Regiment Royal Artillery will sound at the end of the service before the royal procession returns to Holyroodhouse.

Nicola Sturgeon announced her resignation as Scottish first minister in a surprise press conference in Edinburgh on Wednesday, saying her departure is not the result of short-term pressures. Sturgeon has been Scotland's longest-serving first minister, acting in the position and as leader of the Scottish National Party since 2014. In November, the U.K.'s highest court ruled that any second Scottish independence vote would have to be approved by the U.K. government.
