CNN —A man who sent a bomb threat in 2021 to Katie Hobbs, then-Arizona’s secretary of state and now Democratic governor, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison. James Clark of Falmouth, Massachusetts, pleaded guilty in August 2023 to one count of making a threatening interstate communication after being indicted the previous summer on three counts, including making a bomb threat, the Justice Department announced. “Those using illegal threats of violence to intimidate election workers should know that the Justice Department will find you and hold you accountable under the law,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. Following Clark’s threats, law enforcement said they conducted partial evacuations and bomb sweeps of the Arizona secretary of state’s office as well as Hobbs’s home and car. The case was brought by the Justice Department’s election threats task force, which was established in June 2021 to address threats of violence against election workers.

Arizona governor Katie Hobbs did not step down from her position, contrary to claims shared online following a brief visit by Hobbs out of state. Arizona treasurer Kimberly Yee was temporarily serving as acting governor in line with Arizona state constitution which requires the transfer of power while a governor is out of state. This prompted Yee to serve as acting governor in their absence. Hobbs returned to Arizona on Sept. 28, 2023, and gave a speech at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Mr. Volkmer, a Republican, said abortion cases were a low priority, and that he generally did not want to come between women and their doctors. But he said most criminal cases belonged with local prosecutors, and said the attorney general’s office was “certainly not equipped” to handle abortion-related cases. There have not been any abortion prosecutions in Arizona since Roe was struck down, legal experts said, and most counties in Arizona do not even have abortion clinics. The state’s abortion providers are clustered around Phoenix and Tucson. Ms. Hobbs won her campaign for governor last year in part by promising to protect abortion rights and reproductive freedom, but the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature has limited what she and other Democrats can do.

Kris Mayes said ‘democracy is truly a team sport’ in a statement thanking voters. Arizona officials released recount results Thursday confirming that Democrat Kris Mayes won the race for state attorney general over Republican Abraham Hamadeh by 280 votes out of some 2.5 million cast. The narrow victory for Ms. Mayes capped a string of victories by Democrats in Arizona over Republican candidates who were backed by former President Donald Trump, including Secretary of State Katie Hobbs’s defeat of former television news anchor Kari Lake in the governor’s race.
An Arizona judge on Tuesday rejected Democratic Governor-elect Katie Hobbs’s request to sanction defeated Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake over her failed effort to overturn the state’s election results. The suit was rejected by the Superior Court in Maricopa County on Saturday. Hobbs had asked the court to award her over $600,000 to compensate for fees and expenses accrued in defending against Lake’s lawsuit. Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson said in Tuesday’s ruling that Lake’s claims in the lawsuit were not groundless. The lawsuit had targeted Hobbs, who is currently Arizona’s secretary of state and becomes governor next week, along with top officials in Maricopa County.
