My daughter came out, and I missed the punchline
  + stars: | 2024-06-30 | by ( Shannon Carpenter | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
His oldest child and his only daughter just announced to him that she is something different than what’s considered traditional. I did not say, “Hi Gay, I’m Dad.” She set me up with the perfect dad joke opportunity, and I missed it. I am honored that my daughter trusted me enough to know I would be there for her, even if she had her doubts. This was on my mind when my daughter decided to tell her story. But my daughter and her girlfriend having the confidence and support to come out and be who they truly are is a very big deal.

Small towns and rural enclaves along the path of April's total solar eclipse are steeling for huge crowds of sun chasers who plan to catch a glimpse of day turning into dusk in North America. Look no further back than the last U.S. total solar eclipse in 2017 to understand the concern, said Tom Traub, who is part of NASA's eclipse ambassador program. “You had gas stations running out of gas," said Traub, who also serves on the board that runs the Martz-Kohl Observatory near Frewsburg, New York. "And hopefully that won’t be the case.”CELLPHONES MIGHT NOT WORKIn central Texas, emergency officials in Hays County recommend a "solar eclipse survival bag” stocked with items including a mobile phone and charger. And with all the extra traffic, there also will likely be more crash injuries, said Raetzke.

More than 8,000 people, mostly Native Hawaiians, perished at Kalaupapa, including Damien, who eventually contracted leprosy, later called Hansen’s disease. Damien’s love for Kalaupapa’s people was unconditional, said Barbara Jean Wajda of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities. “They keep me like this, make me strong.”She enjoys when people visit and when the church brings pilgrims, she said. The walls of the sisters' house, Kalaupapa’s largest dwelling, are filled with photos of the sisters who worked on the settlement after Marianne. “And we both feel connected to the patients, to the land, to the saints who were here, declared and undeclared,” Wajda said.

On Saturday, the sheer magnitude of the ancient Hopewell culture's reach was lifted up as enticement to a new set of visitors from around the world. Four other sites within the historical park — Hopewell Mound Group, Seip Earthworks, Highbank Park Earthworks and Hopeton Earthworks — join Fort Ancient Earthworks & Nature Preserve in Oregonia and Great Circle Earthworks in Heath to comprise the network. “Now is the time, and to have our traditional, our ancestral sites acknowledged on a world scale is phenomenal,” she said. “We need it culturally, we need it economically, we need it socially," she said. You can't take this away, and so, therefore, it draws us all together in a very unique way,” she said.

The mission calls for modernizing the arsenal with droves of new workers producing plutonium cores — key components for nuclear weapons. James Owen, the associate lab director for weapons engineering, has spent more than 25 years working in the nuclear weapons program. Alexandra Martinez, 40, grew up in nearby Chimayo and is the latest in her family to work at Los Alamos. LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) — Los Alamos was the perfect spot for the U.S. government’s top-secret Manhattan Project. The community is facing growing pains again, 80 years later, as Los Alamos National Laboratory takes part in the nation's most ambitious nuclear weapons effort since World War II. The mission calls for modernizing the arsenal with droves of new workers producing plutonium cores — key components for nuclear weapons. Alexandra Martinez, 40, grew up in nearby Chimayo and is the latest in her family to work at Los Alamos. Some of the hand-written notes touch on the complicated legacy left by the creation of nuclear weapons.

Over the past several months, the administration has moved to bar drilling on 1.8 million acres of sagebrush steppe in Wyoming and on more than a million acres of public land in Colorado. It insulated more than 336,400 acres of public land around Chaco Culture National Historical Park from new oil and gas leasing and mining claims for the next two decades. And last month, it said it would remove about six million acres of potentially oil-rich areas from an upcoming federal lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico that is required by law. The Bureau of Land Management also wants to change how it manages the 245 million acres under its control by allowing conservation leases, similar to the way the agency auctions off parcels for drilling and mining. Administration officials said the conservation efforts were not new and many of the drilling restrictions had been underway for months.

CNN —Tory Lanez, the man convicted of shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, was sentenced on Tuesday to 10 years in prison, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office told CNN. Stallion accused Lanez of shooting her in the foot after she exited a vehicle they had been riding in following an argument. At a press conference following the sentencing on Tuesday, LA County District Attorney George Gascón explained how Lanez attempted to “silence” Stallion after she accused him of shooting her in 2020. But if it can happen to me, imagine those who lack the resources and support systems to help them,” Stallion said, according to the district attorney. The Manhattan Project displaced some New Mexicans and employed others at Los Alamos in the 1940s. Christopher Nolan's new film "Oppenheimer" leaves out these lasting, local impacts. The Manhattan Project displaced some New Mexicans, employed others, and irradiated potentially thousands. Her grandfather was the physicist Enrico Fermi, who worked on the Manhattan Project and is played by Danny Deferrari in the film. The Oppenheimer character briefly mentions people living in the area when he proposes it as the site for the Manhattan Project.

US bans new oil and gas leasing around New Mexico cultural site
  + stars: | 2023-06-02 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Tribes, conservationists and state officials have long called on the federal government to ban drilling in the area. Structures in the area date back thousands of years, and the park is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the United Nations' cultural agency. It is aligned with his goal to conserve at least 30% of federal lands and waters by 2030. But, the Interior Department ban on new leasing on federal lands around Chaco will last for just 20 years and does not extend to private, state or tribal lands. Oil and gas industry groups have opposed withdrawing the lands around Chaco for leasing.

I tell my brother to grab an empty Mountain Dew bottle from his truck so we can bring back some spring water. We’re at the Lincoln memorial. Not the one in Washington, the other one—the 344-acre Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park—an hour south of Louisville. This Lincoln memorial is older by a decade than the Henry Bacon-designed monument in Washington, but it gets only 250,000 visitors a year. The National Park Service estimates eight million people annually drop in on Daniel Chester French’s Lincoln sculpture overlooking the National Mall.
