Anti-Kremlin activist Bill Browder said he believes Alexei Navalny's death was intended as a message to political opponents of Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of elections next month. Dissident Navalny, who died Friday, had been serving a 19-year prison sentence on charges of extremism in Russia, which he vehemently denied. World leaders reacted with dismay and suspicion to the death, with U.S. President Joe Biden saying "Putin is responsible." Russia's Foreign Ministry on Friday said the West's reaction to Navalny's death was "self-exposing," given that no forensic medical examination had been made available at the time. Browder, the CEO and co-founder of Hermitage Capital Management and a friend of Navalny, also accused the Russian leader of being behind the death.

The business conference will draw about 2,000 attendees from Greater China, in what will be one of the region's biggest-yet business delegation to Saudi Arabia, according to one person with direct knowledge of the matter. "From the perspective of both capital and new market, the Middle East, Saudi Arabia are really good new choices for Chinese companies and investors," said Henry Zhang, president of Hong Kong-based private equity firm Hermitage Capital. "Since late last year, a large number of Chinese funds have rushed to the Middle East looking for new investors. For the upcoming conference, Chinese entrepreneurs in attendance represent a range of industries -- from renewable energy and artificial intelligence to biotech, finance and tourism. "Previously, I had to actively pitch Chinese companies to consider Saudi Arabia as their destination of outbound investment and overseas expansion.

Russian currency reserves should be confiscated and used to help Ukraine, Hermitage Capital CEO Bill Browder said in the FT.To avoid weakening dollar dominance, the US must be joined by others, the long-time critic of Vladimir Putin added. Sign up for our newsletter to get the inside scoop on what traders are talking about — delivered daily to your inbox. But Browder argued those assets should be seized and put to use in the defense and reconstruction of Ukraine. If the US alone confiscated Russian reserves, that would risk the dollar's dominance in global finance, as countries would shift to other currencies out of fear that the same could be done to their foreign reserves, Browder said. To avoid this, he argued that other countries with a reserve currency must join the US, leaving investors with little alternative.
