Joe Locke was so moved when he saw “Next to Normal” at the Donmar Warehouse in London last fall that he called his agent with a request. “I was like, ‘I want to do a musical so bad,’” said Locke, 20, who for two seasons has played the sensitive teenager Charlie Spring in Netflix’s L.G.B.T.Q. coming-of-age drama “Heartstopper.”Soon after, his agent said he’d gotten an email from the casting team of Broadway’s “Sweeney Todd,” and the show was looking for a new Tobias Ragg, an urchin taken in by the scheming pie-maker, Mrs. Lovett. “The easiest way to play him is that he’s a bit simple — he’s not a full egg, as the Irish would say,” Locke said in a phone conversation in early January from his Manhattan apartment, before one of his first rehearsals. “But I think he’s a very street-smart character who’s survived in a world where people like him shouldn’t survive.”

CNN —Dame Maggie Smith, the British actress acclaimed for her appearances both on stage and in cinema, has taken on a new role — and this time it’s in the world of luxury fashion. Loewe has cast the 88-year-old, known for roles such as Professor McGonagall in the “Harry Potter” film franchise, in its spring/summer 2024 pre-collection campaign. The pointed hat and cape of Hogwarts are a distant memory as Smith sports three cosy and stylish looks for the campaign. In another, Smith is adorned in a floor-length faux fur coat and holds Loewe’s signature Puzzle bag. The actress is one of several older women who have fronted fashion lines and magazine covers in recent years.

This week, the British coming-of-age drama “Heartstopper” returned to laptop screens all over the world. The first season of this fizzy, feel-good show amassed 24 million hours of views in its first week, according to Netflix, and received glowing reviews from critics. In “Heartstopper,” Charlie is outed as gay in eighth grade; Sahota, who identifies as pansexual, was also outed at school around the same age. “It wasn’t a pleasant experience,” she said, adding that seeing a similar ordeal depicted in “Heartstopper” has helped her feel less alone. “If they can get through it, and they’re living happily, so can I,” she said.

But then we started talking about coming out, and the mood in the room shifted, fast. Last year, Connor came out on Twitter as bisexual, saying he felt forced to do so after some fans accused him of queer-baiting. “I had just told my mum, and I was on top of the world,” he said. “I quickly realized I was ready to tell my mum but I was not ready to tell the world. I retold all my friends and they’re like, ‘Yeah, you told us two years ago.’”And now that he’s out-out and playing gay on “Heartstopper”?

CNN —Hungary’s second-largest bookstore, Lira, said on Friday it plans to take legal action after it received a hefty government fine for the sale of an LGBT-themed British webcomic and graphic novel aimed at teenagers without closed wrapping. The popular “Heartstopper” series, in which two gay teens fall in love, has also been adapted by Netflix as a romantic comedy-drama. Krisztian Nyary, Lira’s creative director and a well-known author himself, told Reuters the fine was disproportionate, the law vaguely worded and that the bookstore would respond legally. Books that feature LGBTQ+ characters are seen wrapped in plastic foil in a bookstore in Budapest, Hungary, on July 11. This is not the first time a Hungarian government office has fined a bookstore for a violation of the law.

This summer, there’s nothing so new on television as something old. Series are emerging two years (“The Witcher”), four (“Black Mirror”), eight (“Justified: Primeval City”), 10 (“Futurama”) and 25 (“The Full Monty”) after you last had to think about them or the works from which they have been spun off. The minimum benchmark for long-term success used to be 100 episodes; now you can take a bow at 18 or 24. At least it looks as if we’ll always have “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”Here are 30 shows to keep an eye out for this summer, in chronological order. Premiere dates are subject to change.

Before “Heartstopper” became a global phenomenon, it was a web comic, published online by the author, Alice Oseman, a few pages at a time. Oseman, 28, began the webcomic in 2016 just after finishing college, and she was the creator, writer and an executive producer of the Netflix series. The main story between Nick and Charlie remains largely unchanged, she said; much of the new material in the Netflix series came from expanding the supporting characters. Rugby scenes were also tricky to film – in the book and on the show, Nick is a rugby player and Charlie joins the team. While filming, she was part of an enormous team, and spent 11-hour days on location in Paris and at a school in Slough, England.
Kit Connor, the star of Netflix’s “Heartstopper,” came out as bisexual Monday in a tweet. Fans speculated that the post was penned in response to accusations of queerbaiting. Accusations of celebrity queerbaiting operate from a specific definition of how to be queer and how to be queer in public, creating conditional standards of acceptability. Internet users scrutinize lyrics, performances and social media posts or stalk the personal lives of celebrities to determine whether they’re queerbaiting their fans. This kind of pressure is just as problematic as the queerphobic prodding and harassment LGBTQ people receive from those outside the queer community.
"Heartstopper" star Kit Connor came out as bisexual on Monday, saying he felt forced to share his sexual orientation after the actor was accused of queerbaiting by viewers of the popular Netflix show. In a rare Twitter post, the British actor wrote: “Back for a minute. bit bored of it now, deleting twitter :),” Connor had said in the September post. “I love u kit im sorry this has been so disgustingly rough on you,” actor Kizzy Edgell, who plays Darcy Olsson on "Heartstopper" said in a separate tweet. We love you Kit, sorry you had to do this."

CNN —The pressure for 18-year-old actor Kit Connor to come out had been building on social media for months. It is one of the first to center LGBTQ characters — both Nick and Charlie, as well as others in the main cast — geared towards a teen and young adult audience. Rob Youngson/NetflixThe truth about Nelson’s character, as well as Connor’s real-life identity, may be much more nuanced.
