The result of the vote means that Thailand will become only the third place in Asia to allow for marriage equality after Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage in 2019 and Nepal in 2023. Mark Phillips/CNNPrevious attempts to legalize marriage equality over the past decade had stalled. Nonetheless Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, of the Pheu Thai Party, had also promised to bring the marriage equality bill to parliament. Japan is the only Group of Seven (G7) country that has not recognized either same-sex civil unions or same-sex marriage, despite recent high court decisions that ruled not allowing same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. South Korea does not legally recognize same-sex marriage but in February 2023, a South Korean court ruled in favor of a same-sex couple seeking equal health benefits.

Kevin Lamarque | ReutersImmigration — both authorized and unauthorized — has helped the U.S. job market sustain a fiery run in recent months without reigniting inflation, economists and analysts say. This dynamic — a heating job market and cooling inflation — is in part the result of increased inflows of immigrants. Typically, a hot labor market walks a tightrope that could easily collapse into reheated inflation. But the Brookings researchers recalculated the government's estimates — this time, factoring the impact of immigrants on the labor pool. They found that with immigration, the 2024 U.S. job market could safely absorb between 160,000 and 200,000 monthly job gains.

Thank goodness for urgent care centers. We found an urgent care at the end of a strip mall in Chicago, and 20 minutes later we received the good news that there was only a sprain. When I inquired about the bill, I was told that the center was hospital-affiliated and as such, is allowed to charge hospital prices. It turns out that I’d stumbled into a lucrative corner of the health care market called hospital outpatient departments, or HOPDs. They do some of the same outpatient care — colonoscopies, X-rays, medication injections — just as doctors’ offices and clinics do.

“In the courtroom we see Donald Trump for who he is. “And a president who is fighting for your family.”For months, Biden and his team refrained from using Trump’s legal woes in their arguments against him. The campaign has leaned into using the verdict as further evidence the former president is unfit for office and has branded him a “convicted felon” in statements. “For the first time in American history, a former president is convicted – a convicted felon. Moore's visit to the Tar Heel State came as Stein, who is now the attorney general, launched his "Veterans for Stein" campaign coalition. "[W]e're pushing back against a lot of these individual forces who are trying to claim this mantle of patriotism and are actually restricting rights in the name of patriotism," Moore told BI at the time. Even though former President Donald Trump won North Carolina in 2016 and 2020, Stein won his attorney general races in the same general election. He said the attorney general shares the values veterans are looking for, especially on issues like health care and housing affordability. "He's consistently stood up for veterans as attorney general," the governor told BI last week.

U.S. President Joe Biden and former U.S. President Barack Obama share a laugh during a star-studded campaign fundraiser at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, on June 15, 2024. The fundraiser included singing by Jack Black and Sheryl Lee Ralph, and actors Kathryn Hahn and Jason Bateman introduced Kimmel, who himself introduced Biden and Obama. The president was fundraising "with out-of-touch elitist Hollywood celebrities," Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said. But Biden told the crowd in California that "we passed every major piece of legislation we attempted to get done." Earlier in the program, Kimmel noted Biden's campaign promise to restore the soul of America and said "lately it seems we might need an exorcism."

Welcome to the age of geriatric millionaires
  + stars: | 2024-06-15 | by ( Juliana Kaplan | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +8 min
While it makes sense that time is often a crucial ingredient to accruing savings and assets, the average age of millionaires in the US has been rising faster than the average age of the overall population over the last three decades. How millionaires are changingSince 1992, the average age of the country's millionaires has been going up. That means that younger millionaires aren't joining their ranks fast enough to keep the average age steady. Millionaires are overrepresented beginning around age 50, but track pretty cleanly with the cohort in their 40's. What does it mean to have so many older millionaires?

However, the amount of money you need to make ends meet can vary significantly depending on where you live. That is largely due to housing prices and taxes, which vary the most out of the basic expenses examined. To cover basic expenses, minimum wage workers are often reliant on tips, or are forced to cut costs in other ways. Even in states where the minimum wage is higher than $7.25, it is often still not commensurate with the estimated living wage. Here is a look at the minimum income a single person needs to get by in every U.S. state.

The Vatican’s meeting on the global debt crisis last week was not quite as celebrity-studded as the one that Pope John Paul II presided over 25 years ago, when he donned sunglasses given to him by Bono, U2’s lead singer. Emerging nations are contending with a staggering $29 trillion in public debt. Fifteen countries are spending more on interest payments than they do on education, according to a new report from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development; 46 spend more on debt payments than they do on health care. Unmanageable debts have been a recurring feature of the modern global economy, but the current wave may well be the worst so far. Overall, government debt worldwide is four times higher than what it was in 2000.

“I believe he’ll be a pro-life president in the future also.”Many senior Trump administration alumni and allies are now mapping out and drafting policy options for a second Trump term. A second Trump term would also put back in place and expand restrictions on Title X grants – federal funds for public and nonprofit groups that provide family planning. Resurrecting these actions in a second Trump would almost entirely be up to the discretion of whomever he appoints to lead the relevant federal agencies. With Roe v. Wade’s protections erased, anti-abortion activists would like a second Trump administration to push harder than it did before – especially in restricting access to mifepristone. Abortion rights advocates worry he could play an outsize role shaping abortion restrictions in a potential second Trump administration.

The Supreme Court justices suggested that abortion opponents had other ways to seek stricter rules for abortion drugs in the court’s unanimous ruling that rejected a group of anti-abortion organizations and doctors challenging the Food and Drug Administration’s current regulations for a widely used pill. Much of Kavanaugh’s opinion covered the various legal thresholds a plaintiff must reach to make it appropriate for courts to intervene in a dispute. He noted that federal law already protects individual health care providers who have objections to performing abortions for moral reasons. “In short, given the broad and comprehensive conscience protections guaranteed by federal law, the plaintiffs have not shown—and cannot show—that FDA’s actions will cause them to suffer any conscience injury,” Kavanaugh wrote. Justice Clarence Thomas wrote a concurrence to bring up other issues he had with the anti-abortion groups’ standing claims.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday said it's no secret that the market rally has been driven by a handful of tech stocks, and it's not likely to change anytime soon. Cramer said companies like Nvidia , Apple , Microsoft , Alphabet , Amazon , Oracle and now Broadcom have been integral to the rally. But while tech stocks have been shining, Cramer said other sectors can't quite say the same. For instance, Cramer pointed to the banks, which often serve as a bellwether for the market. It's hard to know where the market would be without the tech sector, he added.

Latinas face the steepest climb up the corporate ladder despite being as ambitious as their white peers, according to new research from Lean In. Latinas lag behind nearly all other major demographic groups in the executive ranks — white men and white women, Black men and women, even Latino men — comprising a mere 1% of C-suite executives at U.S. companies. A "broken rung" at the first critical step up to manager is still holding Latinas back from climbing the corporate ladder — for every 100 men promoted to manager, only 74 Latinas are promoted, Lean In reports. Latinas are less likely than white women and women overall to have their work highlighted to a leader or to have benefited from a sponsor action like being recommended for a promotion. Nearly half (44%) of Latinas say career growth has become more important to them in the last two years, compared with 32% of white women, Lean In reports.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday said the swelling national debt is manageable as long as it stays around where it is relative to the rest of the economy. In a CNBC interview, Yellen also noted that high interest rates are adding to the burden as the U.S. manages its massive $34.7 trillion debt load. "The way I look at it is that we should be looking at the real interest cost of the debt. The public share of the national debt as a share of GDP is running at about 97% but is expected to soon top 100% at current spending rates. "Americans are clearly very concerned about the cost of living, and dressing the high cost of living remains a top economic priority for the president," Yellen said at a luncheon with the Economic Club of New York.

As those bans helped propel the demand for medication abortion, mifepristone became a logical target for the anti-abortion movement. None of those lower court rulings went into effect because the Supreme Court intervened last year and ordered that the status quo around mifepristone remain in place until the justices reviewed the case. The Supreme Court heard arguments in March. Both the FDA and several medical groups, including the American Medical Association, told the Supreme Court that mifepristone is safe. The mifepristone appeal was one of two abortion cases the high court was considering this month.

What men can do to maintain a healthy sex life
  + stars: | 2024-06-12 | by ( Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
If we don’t take care of our health today, we won’t enjoy a healthy sex life tomorrow. Studies have shown that men with emotional problems or stress are more likely to experience sexual dysfunction in the form of either premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction and/or low sexual desire. Side effects of certain medicationsCertain medications, including those for hypertension and depression, can cause sexual dysfunction as a side effect. They may adjust your dosage or switch you to a different medication that has fewer effects on sexual health. Diabetic men, for instance, are three times more likely to experience erectile dysfunction compared with nondiabetic men.
