Alaska Airlines is acquiring 13 additional Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft in a deal that will also see the sale of 10 Airbus A320 jets. The FAA ungrounded the Boeing 737 Max on November 18 following a 20-month evaluation that still has flyers saying they won't fly on it. Alaska will grow its 737 Max 9 fleet to 45 aircraft with the new order from Air Lease Corporation. Alaska Airlines announced a leasing deal for more Boeing 737 Max aircraft on Monday just days following the end of a 20-month grounding by the Federal Aviation Administration after two fatal crashes. If there's one thing that Boeing, the 737 Max, and Alaska Airlines all have in common, it's a home in Washington.

Several Senate Democrats wrote a letter to YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki on Monday evening, saying they were concerned about election misinformation on its platform and demanding that it be removed. The letter outlines the risk of misinformation ahead of two Jan. 5 Senate runoff races in Georgia that will determine which party controls the U.S. Senate. In response to the letter from the Senate Democrats, a YouTube spokesperson said the most popular election videos on the site come from "authoritative news organizations." "Like other companies, we allow discussions of this election's results and the process of counting votes, and are continuing to closely monitor new developments," the YouTube spokesperson said in a statement. It also asks YouTube for data on videos spreading misinformation as well as to quantify the revenue it has received from hosting election result misinformation.

Members of Congress are demanding Asian American and Pacific Islander representation in President-elect Joe Biden’s Cabinet. Given Biden’s own vow to prioritize diversity in his administration, the lawmakers wrote that they’re holding him to his word. No Asian American and Pacific Islander candidates have been announced thus far aside from Vice-president-elect Kamala Harris. The lawmaker pointed out that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders showed up to the ballot box in record numbers this year. Together, the leaders released a statement under the coalition National Council of Asian Pacific Americans.

Surge in greenhouse gases sustained despite Covid-19 lockdowns, U.N. says
  + stars: | 2020-11-23 | by ( ) www.nbcnews.com + 0.00   time to read: +3 min
GENEVA — Greenhouse gas concentrations climbed to a new record in 2019 and rose again this year despite an expected drop in emissions due to Covid-19 lockdowns, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Monday, warning against complacency. “...In the short-term the impact of the Covid-19 confinements cannot be distinguished from natural variability,” the WMO’s Greenhouse Gas Bulletin said. Like other scientific bodies, the WMO said it expects annual global carbon emissions to fall this year due to Covid measures, and ventured a preliminary estimate of between 4.2-7.5 percent. Such a drop would not cause atmospheric carbon dioxide to go down, but would slow the rate of increase temporarily on a scale that falls within normal variations, it said. That can make its atmospheric levels harder to predict than carbon dioxide.

WASHINGTON — Democratic senators are calling on President-elect Joe Biden to use executive power to advance goals such as tackling climate change, relieving student debt and creating a more progressive immigration system. "I think President Biden has significant executive power. "From Treasury to State to Interior (departments) and the financial regulators, climate action and climate risk management has to be infused into literally everything," he said. Even if Democrats capture both Georgia seats and take control of the Senate, McConnell would retain the power to filibuster legislation and force a 60-vote threshold. Jamal Brown, a spokesman for Biden's transition team, said his agenda will include executive power.

Which States Have Certified Presidential Vote Totals

The results reported right after the presidential election are reliable, but they are not official. The official results will arrive in the coming weeks, after a process called certification. This starts at the county or municipal level, and then a state official or board must review the local certifications and certify the statewide totals. In presidential races, if states certify their results by the so-called safe harbor deadline — this year, it’s Dec. 8 — those results are largely insulated from further challenges. In some states, every county may have certified its results already, but it won’t be listed as complete until the state canvassers sign off.
