Daniel Kramer, a photojournalist who captured Bob Dylan’s era-tilting transformation from acoustic guitar-strumming folky to electric prince of rock in the mid-1960s, and who shot the covers for his landmark albums “Bringing It All Back Home” and “Highway 61 Revisited,” died on April 29 in Melville, N.Y., on Long Island. His death, in a nursing home, was confirmed by his nephew Brian Bereck. Rolling Stone magazine once described Mr. Kramer as “the photographer most closely associated with Bob Dylan.” But that designation seemed highly improbable at the outset. Although Mr. Dylan had already begun his rise to global fame — he released his third album, “The Times They Are a-Changin’,” in early 1964 — Mr. Kramer knew little about him. That changed in February 1964, when he watched the 22-year-old Mr. Dylan perform his rueful ballad “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” on “The Steve Allen Show.” The song details a real event in which a Black woman died after being struck with a cane by a wealthy white man at a white-tie Baltimore party.

In a 2022 survey by Apartment List, a quarter of millennials said they expected to rent forever. And housing experts say that when it comes to homeownership, millennials are the most screwed generation. "Millennials have a much different mindset on life in general than the generation before us," Muller told me. But millennials' housing misfortunes go beyond personal spending habits; they entered adulthood at a terrible time for the housing market. At the same time the housing market was soaring out of control during the pandemic, people were spending more time at home.

Gossett became the third Black Oscar nominee in the supporting actor category in 1983. Gossett went to Hollywood for the first time in 1961 to make the film version of "A Raisin in the Sun."

How cuteness has taken over our world — and why — is a subject being explored in “Cute,” a new (and the first ever) exhibition devoted to the movement at London’s Somerset House. The Industrial Revolution and the rise of mass production allowed cuteness to be unleashed on the world — toys, books and illustrations could, increasingly, be made easily and cheaply. The exhibition — a world first — examines the enduring appeal of the cute aesthetic amongst adults and asks deeper questions about its allure. For Simon May, a professor of philosophy at King’s College London and author of “The Power of Cute,” kawaii is just part of a story which involves the country of Japan more broadly. The Edwardian artist is credited with increasing the cute appeal of our feline friends by giving them human hobbies and pastimes.

That share has increased significantly over the past decade: Just 58.2% of employers made a Roth 401(k) available in 2013, PSCA found. Workers pay tax up front on 401(k) contributions, but investment growth and account withdrawals in retirement are tax-free. High earners may also mistakenly think there are income limits to contribute to a Roth 401(k), as there are with a Roth individual retirement account. Those that don't already do so must allow Roth contributions to facilitate this change, or disallow catch-up contributions, according to Principal. When Roth 401(k), IRA savings makes senseRoth 401(k) contributions may not be wise for all workers.

NEW YORK (AP) —Hattie McDaniel's best supporting actress Oscar in 1939 for “Gone With the Wind” is one of the most important moments in Academy Award history. Now, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has created a replacement of McDaniel's legendary Academy Award that it's gifting to Howard University. Upon her death in 1952, McDaniel bequeathed her Oscar to Howard University where it was displayed at the drama department until the late ’60s. “Hattie McDaniel was a groundbreaking artist who changed the course of cinema and impacted generations of performers who followed her. We are thrilled to present a replacement of Hattie McDaniel’s Academy Award to Howard University,” said Jacqueline Stewart, Academy Museum president, and Bill Kramer, chief executive of the academy, in a joint statement.

I, for one, submit that Black history will always hover over American literature, whether or not the author intends it to. Why is the boy running toward instead of away from Alabama, as so many Black folks have done since the Great Migration? — before jumping back a few years, to 1985, when Ava drags 10-year-old Toussaint into a homeless shelter in Philadelphia. The mother and son have been thrown out of the home they shared with Abemi, Ava’s abusive husband and Toussaint’s stepfather, in New Jersey. Mathis renders Ava and Toussaint’s time in the shelter in poignant, heartbreaking detail.

Like many college graduates, Hattie Kolp needed two major things: a job and somewhere to live. Born and raised in New York, Ms. Kolp always knew she’d be back. California living, she decided after four years attending college outside Los Angeles, wasn’t for her. So with no money and no job, she did what any other 20-something would do: She moved back in with her parents. And Ms. Kolp is still there.

Spoiler alert: You likely have at least some protection in all but your crypto accounts. There are several types of deposit accounts you may have at one bank (e.g., individual savings account, joint checking, business account, etc.) NCUA, which is backed by the full faith and credit of the US government, covers accounts up to $250,000, in much the same way the FDIC covers bank accounts. Crypto accountsIf you invest in crypto assets you have no federally guaranteed protections should the company acting as custodian of your assets go under. Even if you’re holding your crypto assets at a firm that is an SEC-registered broker-dealer and it is a member of SIPC, your crypto assets will not receive SIPC protection.

How much does insulin cost? People with Type 1 diabetes need, on average, one to three vials of insulin per month, according to the American Diabetes Association. Patients with Type 2 diabetes don't always need to take insulin, but those who do can sometimes require more than people with Type 1 diabetes. Even people with what's considered good health insurance coverage can face steep costs in certain situations. In addition to insulin and insurance premiums, Gibson also must spend $550 every three months for glucose monitors and $1,100 for insulin pumps.
Maskot | Maskot | Getty ImagesThe ranks of employers offering a Roth savings option to 401(k) investors continue to grow, giving more workers access to its unique financial benefits. Workers pay taxes up front on 401(k) contributions, but investment growth and account withdrawals in retirement are tax-free. Almost 28% of workers participating in a 401(k) plan made Roth contributions in 2021, up from 18% in 2016, according to the PSCA. (One important note: Investment growth is only tax-free for withdrawals after age 59½, and provided you have had the Roth account for at least five years.) Some may shun Roth savings because they assume both their spending and their tax bracket will fall when they retire.
But now, in the wake of crypto exchange FTX’s implosion, crypto investors were reminded of another risk they face: Crypto accounts lack guaranteed protections when the exchange or platform provider goes belly up. But most banks and brokerages, as well as 401(k) plans, do provide federally guaranteed protections and other insurance. What’s more, customers may unwittingly agree to let the company running an exchange or platform use their digital assets. Bank and credit union accountsIf you have a checking or savings account, a money market deposit account or certificates of deposit at a bank or credit union, make sure the institution has deposit insurance. There are several types of deposit accounts you may have at one bank (e.g., personal account, business account, etc.)
Many New Yorkers dream about getting to live in a coveted rent-stabilized apartment — because it means that rent is often unfathomably cheaper than market value. When Kolp and her parents moved into the 1,500-square-foot two-bedroom apartment in 2002, they paid a little less than $1,000 a month. Today Kolp's rent is $1,300 a month. To put that in perspective, the median asking rent for a two-bedroom apartment in the Upper West Side is $4,000 a month, according to StreetEasy data from Feb. 2021. "It's the hugest blessing of my life because I would not be able to afford an apartment of the size on my teacher salary."
