“Those cities are gone, they’re gone, and we continue to give billions of dollars to a man who refused to make a deal, Zelensky. The comments come at the same time as a rising furor on Capitol Hill over the Ukrainian president among Republicans. Republican leaders are so far declining to meet Zelensky while he is in Washington, DC, while Democrats are embracing the opportunity. A deal could have been made if we had a competent President,” Trump said. It’s just sloganeering.”Vance’s Republican colleagues in the Senate sent a clear message to the Ukrainian president when asked about the remark on Wednesday.

Opinion | Silicon Valley’s MAGA Moment

I co-founded Facebook in college 20 years ago, but I left California and start-up culture behind long ago for public policy and economics. As we sat over scrambled eggs, chicken sausage and whole-wheat toast, I was struck by how many of the wealthiest and most powerful figures in Silicon Valley — including some I knew — were now loudly backing Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump claims that Mark Zuckerberg called him to say that he wouldn’t support a Democrat in November, although Mr. Zuckerberg’s spokesperson denied the claim. It would be easy to write off tech’s rightward drift as nothing more than the rich acting in their economic self-interest, but Silicon Valley has always been driven by profit, and it hasn’t tilted Republican since the 1980s. Even now, it remains largely Democratic, even though even some of Kamala Harris’s strongest Valley supporters worry about how she might approach tech policy.

They’re going to take away your guns, you saw that, they’re going to take away your guns. And at the end it was, “Thank you, thank you, thank, thank, thank, thank, thank, thank.” I said, “What the hell’s… What’s wrong with her?” I say, “Thank you.” And you wait a couple of seconds. “Thank you, thank, thank, thank, thank.” There’s something wrong with her, okay? She was all talk, I’m going to do this and I’m going to do that, and then I’m going to cut tax and then I’m going to give you 25,000 per house and then I’m going to go, over and over. The group said Harris had given it the cold shoulder and “fumbled” by refusing even the “small gesture” of allowing a Palestinian American speaker at last month’s Democratic National Convention. The Uncommitted Movement emerged as a result of Democratic voters’ expressing dissatisfaction with this year’s Democratic presidential primaries. More than 700,000 voters ended up selecting “uncommitted,” sending 30 uncommitted delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Instead, uncommitted delegates staged a sit-in outside the convention hall and set a new deadline of Sept. 15 for Harris to meet with Palestinian American families in Michigan who had lost loved ones in Gaza. That request was rebuffed, as well, according to the group, leading it to issue of the non-endorsement of Harris.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump said Thursday that “the Jewish people” would be partially to blame if he loses in November, escalating his persistent campaign trail criticism of Jewish voters and insisting that Democrats hold a “curse” over them. But the former president appeared preoccupied with what he described as ingratitude from Jewish voters, whom he said should be supporting him in greater proportions because of his record on Israel. Still, Trump has repeatedly cast his rival as “anti-Israel” and “anti-Jewish.”“You have to defeat Kamala Harris more than any other people on earth,” Trump said, addressing the Jewish voters in the audience. You want to control your politicians, that’s fine,” Trump said at the Republican Jewish Coalition in December 2015. “I’m a negotiator like you folks, we are negotiators.”But Trump’s open frustration with Jewish voters became a more frequent theme in the aftermath of his 2020 election defeat.

CNN —Microsoft said Tuesday that Russian operatives have in recent weeks intensified their online attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign by producing and disseminating videos promoting “outlandish conspiracy theories” aimed at stoking US racial and political divisions. One of the inauthentic videos, which Microsoft said had been viewed millions of times, claimed to show Harris supporters attacking an attendee of a Donald Trump rally. Russian operatives promoted the latter story through a website pretending to be a local San Francisco media outlet, Microsoft researchers said. CNN has requested comment on the Microsoft report from the Harris-Walz campaign and from the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC. Tehran has conducted a covert social media activity in an effort to undercut Trump’s candidacy, US officials have said.

CNN —Nearly half of all renter households in the US were cost-burdened in 2023, meaning they paid more than 30% of their income towards housing costs, according to new government data. “Housing costs rose between 2022 and 2023 for both homeowners and renters,” Molly Ross, a survey statistician at the Census Bureau, said in a statement. Households that spend more than 30% of their income on rent, mortgage payments or other housing costs are considered “cost-burdened” by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. In 2023, 56.2% of Black or African American households spent more than 30% of their income on housing costs, compared to 49.7% of the total population. About 2.5 million, or 30.6%, of Black households were considered “severely cost-burdened,” meaning they spent more than 50% of their income on housing costs in 2023.

Here are six things to watch for on Tuesday night:Will Harris deliver the policy message voters say they want to hear? More than her convention speech, the debate will provide a platform for Harris to answer some of those questions. This image shared by ABC News shows the stage in Philadelphia ahead of the debate between Harris and Trump. Rebecca Wright/CNNWhen Harris sticks by Biden’s policies, Trump attacks them and her as a failure. What’s not up for debate is that Biden, though absent in person, figures to be a prominent figure on the debate stage.

Tim Walz touted Vice President Kamala Harris’ record of defending LGBTQ rights on Saturday night, pledging to a supportive crowd that she will advance their cause if elected president. He noted how Harris worked alongside President Joe Biden to issue executive orders protecting the rights of LGBTQ people in health care, the military and education. The organization also applauded her selection of Walz as her running mate, citing his own long record of supporting LGBTQ youth and backing same-sex marriage. Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has met more than 150 world leaders since becoming vice president. Still, Harris has not always been the first phone call for foreign leaders or officials looking to get a line into the White House. UkraineA month after Russia invaded Ukraine, Harris was dispatched to NATO’s eastern flank on a reassurance mission – one that also came with some sensitive diplomatic smoothing-over. For a foreign policy novice with aspirations for higher office, the war in Ukraine was a rigorous introduction to wartime diplomacy. The addition of Gabbard is particularly notable given the tense exchanges she had with the vice president during their 2020 race that left Harris rattled. Trump’s team has been sketching out potential responses on reproductive rights with the expectation Harris will make that a focus during the debate. The Trump campaign has insisted the matter is settled. Thus far, no one is expected to sit in for Harris, just as no one played Biden ahead of the June debate. It’s the second time the vice president will visit the city this week after campaigning with Biden on Labor Day.

The “care economy” — a broad set of policies aimed at helping parents and other caregivers — was the great unfinished work of President Biden’s domestic agenda. Vice President Kamala Harris has made it a central aspect of her campaign to succeed him. Ms. Harris, the Democratic nominee, has spoken frequently on the campaign trail about making it more affordable to raise children. She also laid out policies that aim to reduce housing costs, such as providing up to $25,000 in down-payment assistance to first-time home buyers. In her speech accepting the Democratic nomination on Thursday, Ms. Harris said she would not let conservatives end programs like Head Start that “provide preschool and child care for our children.”

They still wear suffragist-white outfits and cheer on the prospect of “Madam President.”But eight years after Hillary Clinton became the first woman to lead a major party’s presidential ticket, Democrats are sending American women a more sober and urgent message even as they try to elect another barrier-breaking candidate. Republican policies, they argue, have had disastrous and once-unthinkable consequences for the health and autonomy of women and their families since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. A second term for former President Donald J. Trump, they warn, would be even more dangerous. “Simply put,” Vice President Kamala Harris said this week from the stage of her party’s convention, “they are out of their minds.”
