But now, the number of YouTube creators uploading content and making money from the platform has grown tremendously. Still, Allocca said he's noticed there are more successful creators than there used to be but fewer huge stars. AdvertisementSo, while there may be more opportunities for YouTube creators now, it may be a while before we see another rising star who can amass the broad appeal of someone like MrBeast.

Hanif Abdurraqib Just Misses His Dog

“It’s a real culture shock and emotional shock,” Hanif Abdurraqib said in a recent phone interview. The poet, essayist and cultural critic was describing his experience of being surrounded by hundreds of readers in a room while going on tour — made more challenging while fasting for Ramadan — for his best-selling book, “There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension.”His reaction stems partly from the fact that he hasn’t done the usual fanfare that accompanies a book launch since 2019 — the last year he toured in person. And in that time, much has changed for Abdurraqib (more so, perhaps, than other writers): He bought his first home in the neighborhood of Bronzeville in his hometown, Columbus, Ohio; he released his best-known book, “A Little Devil in America,” part memoir and part love letter to Black performance in America; and he was awarded a MacArthur fellowship and an Andrew Carnegie Medal, among other accolades. “I have a lot of gratitude, and everyone is really kind,” said Abdurraqib, 40, who is also a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine. “Because I haven’t been on tour for so long, the responses to my work have grown in my time away, so it’s been good.”

New York CNN —YouTube says hundreds of thousands of creators are now earning a paycheck from posting short-form videos on the platform, as it ramps up its race to compete with rivals like TikTok and Instagram. It hasn’t been cheap: the Google-owned platform is shelling out tens of thousands of dollars to some of its top Shorts creators — like beauty influencer Sydney Morgan — every month. YouTube says the fresh data to its ability to incentivize existing creators to try out a new format — and to attract new users. “I make more from just YouTube Shorts (revenue) sharing in a month than I can make on other comparable platforms in a year,” she said. YouTube declined to share data around the total amounts it’s paid to creators for Shorts in the year since it added the feature to the YouTube Partner Program.

Shares of New York Community Bancorp fell 14% in extended trading Thursday after the regional lender announced a leadership change and disclosed issues with its internal controls. The bank also announced an amendment to its fourth quarter results, adding a disclosure about its internal risk management. With the Canadian economy showing signs of a slowdown, money markets are pricing in the first interest rate cuts since March 2020 as soon as April, which would bring down mortgage costs. Still, more home buyers took out fixed-rate mortgages in September compared with a year ago, eschewing variable rate mortgages where the interest rate varies based on current market rates. Since then, the central bank has raised the key interest rate to a 22-year high of 5% in July. The share of fixed rate loans among five-year and three-year mortgages rose to 68% in August compared with 32% a year ago. In the first three weeks of November, 79% of mortgage seekers in Canada opted for a fixed mortgage, said Hanif Bayat, CEO of financial data firm Wowa Leads.

In Canada, homeowners can take out five-year mortgages, unlike in the U.S. where customers can snag a 30-year mortgage. In some cases, renewed home loan rates could reach 7%, which would push up the average Canadian mortgage by at least a few hundred dollars per month, mortgage brokers estimate. Canadians are already struggling to repay their debts amid high costs of living and rising interest rates. "This dramatic rise in bond yields means that when the computer chugs along and sets up the rates for next week, they will be using higher rates based on these high bond yields," Toronto-based mortgage broker Ron Butler said. He suggests that the spike in bond yields over the past month could on average add C$600 in monthly payments.

Ms. Hanif’s family history illustrates how Bangladeshi Kensington came to be. While the corner is often a male-dominated space, she and other Bangladeshi American women have carved out their own places there. Ms. Saeed wants to buy a house, but real estate in Kensington has become far too expensive. Ms. Saeed also faced opposition as she was growing up, from relatives on her mother’s side who frowned upon dance. With other public spaces so dominated by men, Ms. Ferdous sees it as vital that women gather to keep their traditions alive.

KABUL, Afghanistan — Four major international aid groups on Sunday suspended their operations in Afghanistan following a decision by the country’s Taliban rulers to ban women from working at non-governmental organizations. Excluding women from schools and NGO work in Afghanistan “can and will lead to catastrophic humanitarian consequences in the short to long term,” the International Committee of the Red Cross warned. Half of Afghanistan’s population, or 24 million people, are in need of humanitarian aid, according to the group. The International Rescue Committee said it was dismayed by the Taliban decision, adding that more than 3,000 of its staff in Afghanistan are women. The Economy Ministry’s order comes days after the Taliban banned female students from attending universities across the country, triggering backlash overseas and demonstrations in major Afghan cities.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Afghanistan’s Taliban-run government on Saturday ordered all local and foreign nongovernmental organizations to prevent female employees from reporting to work, in the latest restrictive move against women’s rights and freedoms in the country. The order was made in a letter written in Persian by Economy Minister Qari Din Mohammed Hanif, Abdur Rahman Habib, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s Economic Ministry, told NBC News. Afghan women protest against a new Taliban ban on women accessing university education on Thursday in Kabul, Afghanistan. Getty ImagesForeign governments, including Muslim-majority Saudi Arabia and Turkey, condemned the university ban, which also led to criticism and protests inside Afghanistan. In the western city of Herat on Saturday, Taliban forces used water cannons to disperse women protesting the ban on university education, Reuters reported.
Taliban ban women from working for domestic, foreign NGOs

The Taliban government on Saturday ordered all foreign and domestic non-governmental groups in Afghanistan to suspend employing women, allegedly because some female employees didn't wear the Islamic headscarf correctly. It was not immediately clear if the order applies to all women or only Afghan women working at the NGOs. More details were not immediately available on the latest Taliban ban amid concerns that it could be a stepping-stone to more restrictive measures against women in Afghanistan. Also Saturday, Taliban security forces used a water cannon to disperse women protesting the ban on university education for women in the western city of Herat, eyewitnesses said. Afghan women have since demonstrated in major cities against the ban, a rare sign of domestic protest since the Taliban seized power last year.
YouTube unveiled major changes to its partner program Tuesday, announcing that creators will soon be able to earn ad revenue off of Shorts, its TikTok competitor. The YouTube Partner Program, which began in 2007, has paid creators a cut of ad revenue generated from their videos. Instead, YouTube launched the temporary Shorts Fund, a $100 million fund distributed over the course of 2021-22, to pay eligible creators. For videos posted to Shorts, YouTube will add up the entirety of the revenue from ads run between videos on its Shorts Feed to "reward Shorts creators and help cover the cost of music licensing." "It feels like YouTube cares about creators with their hearts, but they care about the labels with their wallets," Green wrote.
YouTube announced the biggest changes to its creator monetization program in 15 years. YouTube will share ad revenue with Shorts creators who have 1,000 subscribers and 10 million views. That's because YouTube is allocating a portion of total Shorts ad revenue to cover music licensing. Shorts monetization is something of an ultimatum to TikTok, but concerns persistBeginning next year, in place of the YouTube Shorts fund, YouTube will start sharing revenue from Shorts ads with creators. Creator Music is currently in beta and launching later this fall with partners including Empire, Believe, Downtown, and Merlin.
