Flood warnings are in effect Wednesday night for parts of Broward, Miami-Dade, Collier and Hendry counties through Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service, which warned “life-threatening flooding” was ongoing. “Many areas are inundated with water w/ stalled cars & more rainfall is on the way,” the weather service said Wednesday night. @Signia70/ XWhile the state is no stranger to drenching rain, heavy rain events are getting even heavier as the world warms due to fossil fuel pollution. Double-digit rainfall totals are likely in parts of Florida by Friday, but a few areas in southwest Florida could approach 20 inches. An additional 3 to 6 inches of rainfall is expected to fall across Southeastern Florida, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale, through Friday.

“There’s just less dollars for consumers to spend.”The challenge for retailers now is to shake consumers out of that frugal mindset. Retail spending has increased in seven of the past 10 months through March. “If you want to convince consumers to spend you have to give them a reason to do so. Lower prices are a clear opportunity to drive people into the store or online.”It’s a lever that Walmart, he said, has pulled forever. Clothing chain H&M told analysts during its most recent earnings call that it, too, would lower prices.

The three-day online poll, which asked Americans if they approve or disapprove of the way Biden is handling his job, matched the July reading of 40%. The economy, unemployment and jobs remained Americans' top concern with a fifth of respondents citing that as the most important problem facing the U.S. today. A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll last week found that worries about the economy could cost Biden support in the 2024 election, when he faces a likely rematch with Republican former President Donald Trump. The latest poll's approval rating for Biden of 40% was just four points higher than the 36% lows he hit in mid-2022. The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, Aug. 4-6 and collected responses from 1,032 adults, using a nationally representative sample.

U.S. government sets penalties on 43 drugs over price hikes

The Biden administration on Friday announced it would impose inflation penalties on 43 drugs for the third quarter of 2023, having fined 27 earlier this year, in a move it said would lower costs for older Americans by as much as $449 per dose. Drugmakers hiked the price of these 43 drugs by more than the rate of inflation and are required to pay the difference of those medicines to Medicare, the federal health program for Americans over age 65. "People taking 43 of these drugs could pay less (in coinsurance) to access these important treatments, starting July 1," Dr. Meena Seshamani, director for Medicare at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services told reporters. Biden announced in March that his administration would subject 27 drugs to inflation fines for the second quarter of this year. The new list of 43 replaces that selection for the third quarter of 2023.

The Biden administration on Tuesday announced that it will extend the payment pause on federal student loans until after June or when it's able to move forward with its debt forgiveness plan. Federal student loan bills had been scheduled to resume in January. The administration's move comes in response to a federal appeals court ruling last week that imposed a nationwide injunction on the debt relief plan. If it can't proceed with its policy and the legal challenges are still unfolding by June 30, 2023, student loan payments will restart 60 days after that. Federal student loan payments have been on pause since March 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic first hit the U.S. and crippled the economy.

Democrats cite threats to Social Security, MedicareAs Election Day approaches, Democrats are telling voters that Social Security and Medicare may be at risk if Republicans take control of Congress. Scott has called for reauthorizing Social Security and Medicare every five years in Congress, while Johnson suggests revisiting the programs annually. Minimum wage hikes on the horizonVoters will decide this month whether to make certain raises to the minimum wage in Nebraska, Nevada and Washington, D.C. In Nebraska, the measure would ratchet up the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2026, up from its current $9. The current minimum wage is $9.50 an hour or $10.50 an hour, depending on if a worker is offered health insurance.
He also pointed to impending risks to Social Security based on plans floated by certain Republican lawmakers, namely Sens. What's more, it would mean letting two of the most important laws that established Social Security and Medicare expire, he said. It is unclear what his opponent Kean's stance is on Social Security and Medicare. While that's in keeping with years past, the difference this year is Social Security has been more of a front-burner issue. "Usually, it's a lot of lip service to Social Security and how they think it's a great program."
