“He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding.” “These facts require immediate actions by President Trump,” he continued. A few Republicans defended him, but most others simply argued that a rush to impeach Mr. Trump without a hearing or an investigation raised constitutional questions. With Democrats controlling the House, Mr. Trump is expected to become the first American president to be impeached twice. Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington sent a letter to Mr. Trump on Sunday asking for an emergency declaration to obtain additional funding for inauguration security. On Tuesday, a federal inspector general questioned an order to deliver the estimates before Mr. Trump leaves office, after whistle-blowers warned that the rush would imperil their accuracy.

ingHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday disputed progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's claim that the Democratic Party isn't building new leadership. You'll have to ask her — because we are," replied Pelosi, who was recently sworn in as House Speaker of the 117th Congress. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday disagreed with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's claims that Democratic leaders haven't been assembling a new cohort to take over the party. Other high-ranking Democrats include House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, 81, and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, 80. In the CBS interview, Pelosi didn't elaborate on any members who are being considered to eventually lead the party.

House Majority Whip Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., said Sunday that the House could take up articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump early this week, but that they may delay sending them to the Senate until after President-elect Joe Biden's first 100 days in office. Any Senate trial could slow down Biden's ability to pass Covid-19 relief legislation and have his Cabinet officials confirmed. "Yes, I do have concerns," Clyburn told CNN's "State of the Union" when asked about whether impeachment could slow Biden's agenda. "We're also talking about complete barring of the president — or rather of Donald Trump — from running for office ever again," she added. No president has ever been removed from office via impeachment, nor has the House impeached any president more than once.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., joined calls from a handful of his GOP colleagues Sunday for President Donald Trump to resign for “recruiting thousands of Americans” and “inciting them to attack the Capitol building” last week. “The best way for our country," Toomey said on NBC News' "Meet the Press," is "for the president to resign and go away as soon as possible. “After the election, he took this to an entirely different place, orders of magnitude different," Toomey said. “I don’t think his unbelievable behavior from Wednesday could have been reasonably expected,” Toomey said. When asked if he would like to see either man resign from the Senate, Toomey said “that’s their judgment” but that “they’re going to have rough sledding ahead.”

ET Presidential Transition Live Updates: Push to Impeach Trump Continues to Gain Momentum Representative Ted Lieu said that the article of impeachment drafted by him and other House Democrats had drawn over 190 co-sponsors. Representative Hakeem Jeffries and other members of New York’s congressional delegation have called for swift impeachment of President Trump. “A second impeachment, only days before President Trump will leave office, is as unnecessary as it is inflammatory,” the lawmakers wrote. If the House did impeach, and the Senate put Mr. Trump on trial, at least 17 Republicans would most likely have to join the Democrats to win a conviction. Senator Patrick J. Toomey, Republican of Pennsylvania, said President Trump had effectively “disqualified himself” from ever running for office again.

Republican lawmakers swiftly tried to reshape the narrative around the storming of the Capitol after the building was cleared. Congress was evacuated as the mob tore through the building, ransacking offices, damaging and stealing property, and leaving two suspected explosive devices. However, within minutes, Republican lawmakers set into motion a false narrative of the day's events in an attempt to obfuscate the truth and rewrite history. Other members of the GOP Senate delegation have been outspoken in the days since the riot in their calls for calm and performative shock over the unrest. Yesterday a mob inspired by the president and years of institutional Republican Party support brought to a halt the certification of a democratic election.

The House reelected Nancy Pelosi as speaker on Sunday, extending the Democrat's second stint leading the chamber. Pelosi, the only woman to serve as speaker, will hold the job for a fourth term. Pelosi called Sunday for state and local government aid, a provision Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has opposed. He said the Mattis waiver was predicated on having a military leader to stabilize decision-making under an inexperienced president, whereas Biden's goal is a return to normalcy. Biden asked Congress for a waiver for Austin, as it gave Mattis in 2017. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army National Guard who voted against the Mattis waiver, told MSNBC she will oppose it again for Austin "on principle." During the Trump administration, many civilian policy officials left the Pentagon and often were not replaced. Now some defense officials worry that Lloyd Austin, like Mattis, will rely more on his uniformed leaders than his civilian policy team.

The development marks a shift in how Congress is adapting to the internet, especially in the midst of a pandemic. Use of the app, named Markup ERVS, had not been publicly disclosed before Friday. The House Democrats also chose their caucus chair and committee heads through the app, which transfers data to staff in Washington. Earlier this year, the House changed its procedures for voting on legislation by the full chamber. The virus continues to impact lawmakers’ ability to travel to Washington to cast votes and meet with colleagues, making the app’s launch timely.

WASHINGTON — Lawmakers are growing optimistic about a coronavirus relief deal, as party leaders converged Thursday on a price tag after months of stalemate gave way to meaningful negotiations. But lingering policy disputes remain and leaders still hope to combine the Covid-19 relief into a government funding bill by the Dec. 11 deadline to avert a shutdown. A breakthrough came Wednesday when Pelosi and Schumer backed a $908 billion bipartisan measure as the basis for negotiations, lending support for a reduced price tag more palatable to Republicans than Democrats' previous $2.2 trillion offer. McConnell has insisted on liability protections for businesses and organizations from Covid-related lawsuits, which Democrats are resisting. "There are issues — in particular, the size of state aid, and the liability relief," he told reporters on Thursday.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Trump's "childish and infantile" refusal to concede is distracting Republican lawmakers from negotiating more Covid-19 relief. "Senate Republicans are distracted by an angry, petulant president. Shelby said he has spoken to Pelosi about Covid-19 relief. He cited the $2.2 billion HEROES Act, which has cleared the Democratic-controlled House but which Senate Republicans have said is too large. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Some U.S. House of Representatives Democrats on Thursday blamed Tuesday’s election losses on colleagues who embraced defunding police departments and “socialist” policies, according to sources familiar with a phone call they held. Slideshow ( 2 images )Democrats went into this week’s congressional elections, in which all 435 House seats were up for grabs, with high hopes of significantly building on their majority control of the chamber. Democrats are expected to nonetheless hold onto their majority in the new Congress that convenes on Jan. 3. The same source said that several Democrats during the call also voiced anger over liberal members embracing socialism and echoed the idea that this caused election losses. The 2020 election losses have led a couple House moderates to foment talk of a challenge to Pelosi’s re-election as speaker in January, according to The Hill newspaper, which mentioned Representative Hakeem Jeffries as a possible challenger.
