A hot pink Barbie flip phone is launching this summer
  + stars: | 2024-02-25 | by ( Ryan Browne | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The company behind Nokia-branded smartphones, HMD, short for Human Mobile Devices, says it is launching a Barbie flip phone this summer, in partnership with toy maker Mattel . Soon, you'll be able to get a flip phone from the blockbuster toy franchise. It won't be connected to the internet, making it a throwback to the "dumb phones" of yesteryear before smartphones became popular. The device looks like a standard flip phone with buttons rather than a touch screen, and comes in a hot pink color, resembling the iconic pink flip phone accessory that comes with many Barbie dolls. This is a step away from Nokia which is the brand HMD typically has used to sell its dumb phones and smartphones.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - HMD Global, which makes Nokia-branded phones, has become the first major smartphone company to manufacture devices in Europe with its first made-in-Hungary 5G model, aimed at data security-conscious customers, now available for purchase. "We are thrilled to be manufacturing the Nokia XR21, our signature rugged 5G smartphone, in Europe," HMD Global co-founder, chairman and CEO Jean-Francois Baril said on Tuesday. Before HMD opened its Hungarian operations, Europe had no large-scale smartphone manufacturing as major companies like Apple and Samsung make their phones in Asia to keep costs down. HMD signed an exclusive 10-year licensing agreement with Nokia Oyj (NOKIA.HE), once the world's largest phone maker, in 2016 to make Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets. The Nokia XR21 European edition is priced from 649 euros, or 549 pounds, the company said.

Influencers and members of Gen Z are swapping smartphones for "dumb phones" that can only call and text, CNBC reported. The trend has since expanded to influencers who are documenting their journey of winding down screen time with the use of dumb phones. "What we're trying to do with the Light phone isn't to create a dumb phone, but to create a more intentional phone — a premium, minimal phone — which isn't inherently anti-technology," Hollier told the outlet. TikToker Alex Purdy used a Light brand dumb phone for a month and shared an update with followers in January. In the video, Purdy mentioned some issues with receiving texts, but ultimately encouraged commenters to get one of their own.
This includes what's known as "feature phones" — traditional flip or slide phones that have additional features like GPS or a hotspot. "I think you can see it with certain Gen Z populations — they're tired of the screens," said Jose Briones, dumb phone influencer and moderator of the subreddit, "r/dumbphones." At the same time, HMD's global feature phone sales were down, according to the company. "In North America, the market for dumb phones is pretty much flatlined," said Moorhead. The new Nokia G22, which was rolled out Feb. 25, is designed to be repaired at home. The Nokia G22 has been designed to cut down on the steps and complexity involved in replacing a battery, screen, and charging port. The Nokia G22 starts at £149.99 (around $179), runs on Android 12, and has a battery life of up to three days. Circular, for example, is a subscription service that ensures Nokia phones are recycled or reused when a customer returns them. The Nokia G22 will be on display at MWC 2023 and rollout began Feb. 25.
BARCELONA, Feb 26 (Reuters) - A clash between Big Tech and European Union telecoms firms over who will underwrite network infrastructure is set to dominate discussion at the world's largest telecoms conference this week. More than 80,000 people, including tech executives, innovators, and regulators, are set to descend on this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. EU industry chief Thierry Breton on Thursday launched a 12-week consultation on its "fair share" proposals, under which Big Tech platforms would bear more of the costs of the systems which give them access to consumers. By contrast, Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE), Orange (ORAN.PA), Telefonica (TEF.MC) and Telecom Italia (TLIT.MI) have been actively lobbying for Big Tech to pay the fees. "This discussion around 'fair share', or what we sometimes call the 'investment gap', is going to be a threshold question," said John Giusti, GSMA's chief regulatory officer.
BARCELONA (Reuters) - HMD Global Oy, licensee of Nokia-brand smartphones, said on Saturday it is developing capabilities and processes this year to bring 5G device production to Europe. REUTERS/Yves Herman/File PhotoEurope has no big smartphone manufacturing presence, as all the major companies, including Apple and Samsung, make their phones in Asia to cut costs. HMD in 2016 signed an exclusive 10-year licensing agreement with Nokia Oyj, once the world’s largest phone maker, to make Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets. HMD used Nokia’s remaining phone patents and manufacturing facilities of Taiwan’s Foxconn to build a new line of smartphones to compete with other budget Android phone makers. The company also unveiled three smartphones on Saturday - the Nokia G22, Nokia C32 and Nokia C22 - with three-day battery life and said it would begin repairing mobiles in collaboration with repair firm iFixit.
The Nokia G22 smartphone from Finnish firm HMD Global comes with a removable back to let you swap out broken parts. The next smartphone to come from mobile icon Nokia is a handset that users can repair themselves. The Nokia G22, developed by Finnish manufacturer HMD Global, is a standard smartphone with a 6.5-inch screen and a 50-megapixel main camera. Right to repair refers to a movement among consumer rights campaigners to make it easier for consumers to repair their gadgets. There is one drawback with the Nokia G22 — it only meets the IP52 benchmark on resistance against damaging substances, meaning it is not immune to water damage.
