Steven Dillingham, director of the Census Bureau, speaks while unveiling the advertising outreach campaign for the 2020 Census, on January 14, 2020 in Washington, DC. The director of the U.S. Census Bureau said Monday that he intends to retire on Wednesday, as President-elect Joe Biden takes office. Steven Dillingham, a career civil servant whom President Donald Trump appointed to lead the bureau in 2018, faced accusations of politicizing the bureau. Two political appointees, Nathaniel Cogley and Benjamin Overholt, were spearheading the effort, Gustafson wrote. You met this challenge head on and overcame it," Dillingham wrote.

ET Live Updates: House Set to Impeach Trump, After Pence Rejects Call to Strip His Powers Lawmakers said they would move to impeach the president on Wednesday, after formally calling on Vice President Mike Pence to use the 25th Amendment. In a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi before the House vote on Tuesday, Vice President Mike Pence rejected the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment. Credit... Nicole Craine for The New York Times The House on Tuesday night formally called on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and strip President Trump of his powers. With Democrats controlling the House, Mr. Trump is likely to become the first American president to be impeached twice. Other sites such as Snapchat, Reddit and Twitch also curtailed Mr. Trump.

“He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding.” “These facts require immediate actions by President Trump,” he continued. A few Republicans defended him, but most others simply argued that a rush to impeach Mr. Trump without a hearing or an investigation raised constitutional questions. With Democrats controlling the House, Mr. Trump is expected to become the first American president to be impeached twice. Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington sent a letter to Mr. Trump on Sunday asking for an emergency declaration to obtain additional funding for inauguration security. On Tuesday, a federal inspector general questioned an order to deliver the estimates before Mr. Trump leaves office, after whistle-blowers warned that the rush would imperil their accuracy.

Apple will allow Amphetamine, an app that keeps Mac computers awake, to remain on its App Store, after a dispute with its developer over whether it promoted drug use. Developer William Gustafson said Apple reversed its decision after a phone call between the two parties. "On that call, an Apple representative stated that Apple now recognizes that the word 'amphetamine' and the pill icon are being used 'metaphorically', and in a 'medical sense,'" wrote developer William Gustafson on Github. Apple will allow Amphetamine, an app that keeps Mac computers awake, to remain on its App Store, after a dispute with its developer over whether it promoted drug use. On a call on Saturday between William Gustafson, the developer, and Apple, a company representative said the six-year-old app could remain.

But instead of being solid, hollow-core fiber is empty inside, with dozens of parallel, air-filled channels narrower than a human hair. HFT firms use sophisticated algorithms and ultrafast data networks to execute rapid-fire trades in stocks, options and futures. High-frequency traders use hollow-core fiber for short distances of several hundred yards at most, according to industry engineers and executives. Replacing standard fiber with hollow-core fiber over that brief stretch might speed up a firm’s network by a few hundred nanoseconds. Hollow-core fiber was pioneered in the 1990s but never gained widespread use because of a key problem: Signals sent through such fiber fade faster than over standard fiber, making it impractical to use hollow-core fiber for long distances.

Tops 100,000 New Cases in a Day for the First Time In the aftermath of a presidential election in which the pandemic was a top issue, 23 states have reached a record number of coronavirus cases in the past week. For months, Maine had among the lowest levels of transmission anywhere in the country, but new cases there have more than tripled. As states report new cases unevenly from day to day, seven-day averages are a more reliable gauge of trends than an individual day’s figures are. Surges in coronavirus cases in the Midwest could foreshadow a new round of jobless claims if indoor dining is further curtailed. On a seasonally adjusted basis, new state claims totaled 751,000, significantly lower than after the coronavirus pandemic first struck but still extraordinarily high by historical standards.

But Mr. Trump has added a Thursday trip to his itinerary in Tampa, Fla. — where Mr. Biden will also appear later in the day — to hold a rally outside a football stadium. “He is making people less favorable and less open to voting for him.” For Mr. Trump, holding a rally in Tampa amounts to coming full circle. But the Trump campaign has leaned on Republican allies in the legislature to prevent any changes. But it’s not clear if Mr. Trump or Mr. Biden fully believe it. Neither Mr. Trump nor Mr. Biden is expected to appear in the state before the election.
