CNN —“I collect barf bags” is not a complete sentence. “I collect barf bags because they’re pretty neat.”“I collect barf bags, and I’m not the only one.”Of the eight billion people on the planet, the number of serious barf bag collectors is just north of 100, according to notable members of their ranks. The ineffable whyWhen Steve Silberburg started collecting barf bags around 1981, he thought he would be the only one. People were indeed amused, but it had an unintended side effect: Classmates started bringing Silberburg other barf bags to add to his collection. “We don’t want anybody to get ahead of us, you know.”“It makes a good litmus test, telling people you collect barf bags,” Silberburg says.

Images: AP/Reuters Composite: Mark KellyNeptune Township, N.J.A religious nonprofit has owned Ocean Grove, a stretch of beach and adjacent property, for more than 150 years. In the 1980s the group relaxed that policy, opening Ocean Grove’s beaches at noon on Sundays between Memorial Day and Labor Day. It’s the only patch of the roughly 130-mile Jersey Shore that’s off limits to bathers on summer Sunday mornings. Now state officials are looking to strip the community of its religious tradition and force the beaches open.

Jubail Mangrove Park is a green expanse of gray mangrove trees on the northeastern edge of Abu Dhabi’s Al Jubail island, where shallow tidal waterways spill out into the clear blue Arabian Sea. It’s a tranquil world away from the shimmering skyscrapers and heat-hazed hustle of downtown Abu Dhabi, albeit just a short drive away. Dreamlike destinationThe Jubail Mangrove Park is an unexpected green escape from the deserts of Abu Dhabi.
