James Kent, a distinguished chef and successful Manhattan restaurateur who seemed poised to become a food-industry tycoon, died on Saturday. The young man asked if he could spend time in Mr. Bouley’s kitchen. Mr. Bouley said yes. He spent the summer working at Bouley, the chef’s TriBeCa mainstay. At the same time, New York’s Off Broadway nonprofits, long essential seedbeds for many of the nation’s most acclaimed playwrights, are shedding staff, programming and even real estate. But there is an unexpected bright spot this season. Commercial Off Broadway, a small sector of New York’s theatrical economy and one that has for years been somewhere between difficult and dormant, is back in business. “Oh, Mary!,” a madcap comedy that imagines Mary Todd Lincoln as a daffy alcoholic, is selling out nightly at a 295-seat theater in the West Village, and is likely to transfer to Broadway this summer. Melanie, the singer-songwriter who rose through the New York folk scene, performed at Woodstock and had a series of 1970s hits including the enduring cultural phenomenon “Brand New Key," has died. Her publicist Billy James told The Associated Press that Melanie died Tuesday. NEW YORK (AP) — Larry Fink, an acclaimed and adventurous photographer whose subjects ranged from family portraits and political satire to working class lives and the elite of show business and Manhattan society, has died at 82. Robert Mann, owner of the Robert Mann Gallery, told The Associated Press that Fink died Saturday at his home in Martins Creek, Pennsylvania. Mann did not cite a specific cause of death, but said that Fink had been in failing health. “Of course the revolution didn't quite get there so I was left with a career,” he told Blind Magazine in 2021. Fink's survivors include his second wife, the artist Martha Posner, and a daughter, Molly, from his marriage to painter Joan Snyder.

We lived first in the Village, on Jones Street. Nicholas was a colicky baby, and I endured many disapproving stares as I carried him, screaming, through the night streets of the Village in hopes of calming him.

If it goes through, the hospital’s disappearance would leave the residents of Lower Manhattan with few major medical institutions. The largest hospital that would remain to serve that area would be NewYork-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan hospital, a small institution that has fewer than 200 beds. Most of the large hospitals serving neighborhoods that include Greenwich Village, the Lower East Side, Little Italy and Chinatown have been shuttered. That was especially the case in Queens, where years of hospital closures left the few remaining hospitals, including Elmhurst, overwhelmed. During the first deadly phase of the pandemic, Beth Israel cared for more than 1,700 Covid patients — 165 of whom died, according to state statistics.
