The 29-year-old American, gunning for her second title of the season following her triumph in Montreal, will take on Russian Veronika Kudermetova on Sunday. The pair traded breaks early in the second set before Pegula stepped up the pressure again, firing a sizzling forehand winner en route to a 4-2 lead. Pegula finished the job when she forced Sakkari into making a mistake from the back of the court. Earlier, Kudermetova outlasted former French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6(6) 6-7(2) 6-3 in a gruelling battle lasting three hours and 25 minutes to make her second final of the season. Second seed Sakkari powered past Dolehide, who is ranked 111th in the world, for a 7-5 6-3 victory to capture her second career title, ending the week without dropping a set. Sakkari had lost six finals since winning her first title at the WTA 250 tournament in Rabat in 2019. "We've heard so many bad things - that I will never win a title, that I'm a top-five player with only winning one title," said Sakkari, who broke down in tears after her win. We've waited for more than four years for a second title." In Saturday's final, Dolehide rallied from a break down in a tight opening set to take a 5-4 lead, but Sakkari won the next three games to take the set.

Kostyuk makes light of rain breaks to stun eighth seed Sakkari
  + stars: | 2023-07-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
"Every time I was going into a rain break I was going into different emotions," said Kostyuk, who was also emotional several times during the match. Sakkari initially looked undisturbed by the rain suspension, taking the first set soon after the restart. Her new training partnership with former Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis looked to be paying off with Sakkari in complete control. Kostyuk, however, turned the tables in the second set with aggressive play that forced Sakkari into more unforced errors. Sakkari was wilting by then and Kostyuk took nine consecutive games en route to a 5-1 lead before sealing victory on her first match point.

Dominant Sabalenka ends Sakkari's run to reach Madrid final

[1/3] Tennis - Madrid Open - Park Manzanares, Madrid, Spain - May 4, 2023 Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka celebrates winning her semi final match against Greece's Maria Sakkari REUTERS/Juan MedinaMay 4 (Reuters) - World number two Aryna Sabalenka brushed past Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-1 in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open on Thursday to set up a potential second straight final showdown with top ranked Iga Swiatek. Sabalenka and Sakkari's ninth meeting on tour and first on clay ended with the 24-year-old Belarusian extending her win-loss record over the Greek ninth seed to 6-3. Sabalenka, who was champion in Madrid in 2021, stayed on track for her second title of the season in style after winning the Australian Open in January. She won an impressive 70.7% of her first serve points and saved five of six break points while sending down four aces against Sakkari. The Belarusian will next face the winner of Swiatek or Russian Veronika Kudermetova in Saturday's final.
March 17 (Reuters) - Elena Rybakina knocked out defending champion Iga Swiatek with a 6-2 6-2 semi-final victory at Indian Wells on Friday to set up a clash against Aryna Sabalenka in the final. Two months after Rybakina knocked Swiatek out of the Australian Open in the fourth round, the Wimbledon champion once again put in an impressive display against the world number one. Rybakina was in control from the start, breaking early to take a 2-0 lead, before going on to clinch the first set when Swiatek produced a double fault on set point. "I really played well today, it was a really nice atmosphere tonight," Rybakina said in her on-court interview. Rybakina will be out for revenge when she faces Sabalenka, who defeated her in the Australian Open final in January.
After a wry grin, Sakkari grew serious and walked toward the chair umpire holding up a finger, saying: "If she screams one more time in my face ... No, no, no, no. One more time and I'm going to speak to the referee." Taking charge of the situation appeared to work for Sakkari, who duly broke the 18-year-old Russian to take the set, then locked down the match to reach the third round. "During a match you can be very pumped or, you know, the way that some players celebrate their points, it's not appropriate," Sakkari later told reporters.
