WASHINGTON — The Biden administration said Tuesday that it will expand the number of Central American children eligible to apply for asylum in the U.S. while still in their home countries. The program, known as the Central American Minors Program, began in 2014, during the Obama administration, to allow children whose parents were legally in the U.S. to apply for admission, but the Trump administration stopped it. The Biden administration had been accepting applications only from children with cases that were pending when the program closed. The Biden administration had embraced the Central American Minors Program as a solution to the record number of unaccompanied children crossing the border, claiming it would encourage children to apply from home rather than make the dangerous journey north. "We are firmly committed to welcoming people to the United States with humanity and respect, as well as providing a legal alternative to irregular migration," the State Department spokesperson said.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson meets with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison at Downing Street in London, Britain, June 14, 2021. REUTERS/Henry NichollsBritain and Australia have agreed a trade deal after talks between their prime ministers ironed out outstanding issues, Australian Minister for Trade Dan Tehan said on Tuesday. The agreement will be Britain's first trade deal since Brexit, and comes as London seeks to expand commercial and diplomatic links in the Indo-Pacific region. The deal will be keenly scrutinised by British farmers, who fear they could be forced out of business if the deal eliminates tariffs on lamb and beef imports from Australia. Australian Minister for Trade David Littleproud declined to reveal specifics but said Australian farmers would benefit from the deal.

Observers were particularly struck by the G-7’s strong language about Russia and China. Yet China and Russia appear unimpressed, as does Iran. China proceeded with the systematic destruction of Hong Kong’s liberties while moving forward with its ominous naval buildup. Iranian ships bearing mysterious cargos plowed steadily across the Atlantic toward its allies in the Western Hemisphere. The harsh reality is that the U.S. and its allies are losing ground to their adversaries, and the balance of power is moving sharply against us.

When Americans Took to the Streets Over Inflation
  + stars: | 2021-06-11 | by ( Jon Hilsenrath | ) www.wsj.com + 0.00   time to read: +16 min
Today, after decades of nearly invisible inflation in the U.S., many Americans have little idea what it looks like. It would take two deep recessions and new ways of thinking about economics to tame the inflation of that period. Central bank independence and an official low inflation target became lodestars for central bankers around the world, including the Fed. If consumers, workers and businesses come to believe that inflation will worsen, they will bid up prices and wages in anticipation, fueling the very inflation they loathe. Will we see Americans in the streets again protesting out-of-control prices?

The S&P 500 is at an historic high, but investors who earlier this year overweighted their portfolios into reopening stocks like Caterpillar and banks, and away from tech and other growth stocks, appear to be rethinking that strategy. "The value trade is unwinding, and the growth bulls are winning," Alec Young, chief investment officer at Tactical Alpha, told me. "Bond yields are a proxy on the growth outlook," he told me, noting that bond investors see moderating inflation and a slower rate of growth (though still positive) in the second half of the year. The result: Investors are staying in the market, but they are rotating into defensives (health care) and growth (technology). Formerly crowded trades like cyclicals and banks that are associated with the "value trade" are now retreating.

REUTERS/Nathan FrandinoOne year after a statue of Francis Scott Key was toppled by racial injustice protesters in Golden Gate Park, an art exhibit opens next week with 350 slave sculptures gathered around the space once dedicated to the "The Star-Spangled Banner" creator - a slaveholder himself. To be unveiled on the June 19 holiday marking emancipation from slavery in America, the exhibit titled "Monumental Reckoning" is on the spot where Key's statue was dislodged on Juneteenth 2020. Her 350 steel "ancestors" are among public sculptures she has created from California to Connecticut to honor Black lives. The project has support from several Black leaders, including San Francisco Mayor London Breed, and sponsors include the Museum of the African Diaspora. Canada’s TC Energy Corp. TRP 0.59% and the Albertan provincial government said Wednesday they would scuttle the Keystone XL oil pipeline project, bringing to an end a yearslong controversy over an effort to pipe more Canadian crude to the U.S. Keystone XL has been mired in court challenges and left in limbo by shifting U.S. political leadership since it was initially proposed in 2008. Since then, Canadian oil producers have been rocked by falling oil prices and the government had doubled down on getting approval for the project as a lifeline for the industry. “We remain disappointed and frustrated with the circumstances surrounding the Keystone XL project, including the cancellation of the presidential permit for the pipeline’s border crossing,” said Jason Kenney, premier of Alberta. “It’s a disgrace President Biden played politics and killed the Keystone XL Pipeline,” said Austin Knudsen, the attorney general in Montana, the lead plaintiff—along with the Texas attorney general—of 23 states.

The first solar eclipse of 2021 will take place early on June 10, promising a dramatic sky show for people in the northeastern U.S. as well as in parts of Canada, Greenland, Europe and Asia. Annular solar eclipses are those occurring when the moon is at or near the most distant point in its elliptical orbit around Earth. Total solar eclipses occur when the moon is closer and appears large enough to fully block the sun. The eclipse comes 15 days after the year’s only total lunar eclipse, which some called the super flower blood moon. The moon was at its closest point to Earth during that eclipse and thus appeared a bit bigger than usual—a supermoon.

Trump made the statement after Nigeria banned Twitter, which deleted a tweet from its president. "Congratulations to the country of Nigeria, who just banned Twitter because they banned their President," Trump said. Trump then said he should have banned the two major social platforms when he was president, but said he didn't because of CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "Zuckerberg kept calling me and coming to the White House for dinner telling me how great I was," Trump said in the statement.
