The American press, he writes in clear-eyed terms, “shouldn’t be neutral about upholding democracy” and must not “dispassionately observe our way to authoritarianism.”We spoke with Kristof over email for a Q&A about this and more. This is strange for a pundit to admit, but I think there’s too much punditry in journalism today and not enough reporting. … We journalists shouldn’t dispassionately observe our way to authoritarianism; we shouldn’t be neutral about upholding democracy.” Do you believe your colleagues in the press are as clear-eyed about this as you are? I believe that journalism — along with law and the civil service — restrained the Trump presidency and is a force for civilization and democracy. He believed it and I believe it, and that is why I say that journalism is an act of hope.

New York CNN —The New York Times is facing a sustained wave of backlash. It is your agenda.”The Times is, of course, far from the only news organization that has faced criticism over how it has covered the 2024 race. There is a mountain of thorny issues at the doorstep of outlets like The Times — and often there is no clear answer. For example, after the 2020 election, the conventional wisdom was that the press should largely ignore Trump’s antics. “But if Democrats lose to Trump after all THAT coverage, the fault will not be in the media, but in themselves.”

New York CNN —The New York Times is facing questions about a sweeping investigative story it published on the Israel-Hamas war back in December. But key elements of The Times’ reporting in telling that larger story have since fallen under the microscope. “We weren’t aware of the rape initially; we were informed only when The New York Times’ journalist approached us,” her mother told the Israeli outlet YNet. we don’t know exactly what happened.”“It was only following the New York Times investigation that we learned from the journalists that my sister had been raped,” Abdush’s brother added to YNet. In this case, there is a large volume of evidence to indicate that Hamas carried out sexual assaults during the October 7 attack.

On Monday, I contacted the major news organizations that amplified Hamas’ claims, which immediately assigned blame to Israel for the blast that it said had left hundreds dead. Those organizations included CNN, the Associated Press, Reuters, Al Jazeera, and The Wall Street Journal. Since the explosion, one week ago Tuesday, Israel and the U.S. have assessed that the rocket originated in Gaza, not Israel. A CNN spokesperson declined to comment specifically on the online story when reached Monday. (I should note that Grueskin didn’t believe that The Times’ note went far enough, questioning, among other things, why it took almost a week to issue its mea culpa.)

An executive at The Times, who requested anonymity to speak candidly, acknowledged to CNN on Wednesday that the work stoppage would certainly create difficulties. Joe Kahn, executive editor of The Times, said in a note to staff, “We will produce a robust report on Thursday. “We’re asking readers to not engage in any [New York Times] platforms tomorrow and stand with us on the digital picket line!,” Amanda Hess, a critic-at-large for the newspaper, wrote on Twitter. And we need productive negotiations to get to a deal.”Susan DeCarava, president of the NewsGuild of New York, said in response, “Union democracy is crucial to union power. “When Times management comes to the bargaining table with their insulting and disrespectful offers, they have to explain it to a room full of their own employees—and they hate it.

New York Times reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones speaks outside the Times' office, Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022, in New York. “When Times management comes to the bargaining table with their insulting and disrespectful offers, they have to explain it to a room full of their own employees—and they hate it.
The historic work stoppage is set to go in effect at midnight on December 8 and last for an entire 24 hours. In effect, the public will get a glimpse of a world without much of The Times’ hard-hitting and informative journalism. And it is possible an agreement will somehow be struck before the work stoppage goes into effect. But NewsGuild spokesperson Wen Zhuang said there are no more planned sessions on the schedule, which would make it far more difficult to hammer out a last-minute agreement. And as Vanity Fair’s Charlotte Klein reported Tuesday, management is also working to find content to fill the paper during the day of work stoppage.
