Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur said two-thirds of the car would need to be changed out and called the situation "unacceptable." "These cars are generating huge amounts of suction underneath now," said Williams Racing team principal James Vowles. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff lashed out at a reporter who asked how the cancelled practice was not a "black eye" for F1. The brief first test of the course along the transformed Strip marks F1's return to Las Vegas for the first time in nearly 40 years.

Friday's qualifying will not begin until midnight local time, meaning it will take place on the same day as Saturday's 10 p.m. race down the Las Vegas Strip, with media obligations following both events. "If I'm tired I'm just going to sleep and if I'm in the car, I'm just going to drink Red Bull. Asked if Verstappen could be more vulnerable in Las Vegas, Alonso did not hesitate. Drivers said the late night starts in Las Vegas could have a knock on effect when they head to Abu Dhabi the following weekend.

Asked if he was looking forward to this weekend, the three-time world champion was unequivocal, "No." "I just always want to focus on the performance side of things," shrugged Verstappen. "I am looking forward to trying to do the best I can, but not looking forward to this." Reporting by Steve Keating in Las Vegas.

I mean, it's not something that when I joined Formula One, I need to have a 75% win record over a season you know," he told reporters. He has led 922 laps, another record for a season, and counting. Verstappen has led the championship since the Spanish Grand Prix of May 2022 and is guaranteed to end the season with a record run of 39 races in a row as leader. He has won more times (11) from pole position in a season than any other driver, after last year setting a record for most wins in a season not from pole (nine). Red Bull's 19th win of the campaign equalled Mercedes' 2016 record and broke their rivals' record from that same season of most laps led (1,055).

The 23-year-old Briton has finished runner-up five times this year and six times in a Formula One career that remains without a victory. Australian rookie team mate Oscar Piastri won the sprint at Lusail and was second in the main race. "I think Qatar was our best chance of winning a race. And I missed out on that one," Norris told reporters. "We can look decent, but I think realistically we're not at that level as a general package with these guys.

McLaren's Lando Norris and Australian rookie Oscar Piastri, on a grand prix podium for the first time, finished second and third. The constructors' title was Red Bull's sixth since they entered the sport in 2005 and they did it at a circuit owned by engine partner Honda. "Max, that was absolutely fantastic," said team boss Christian Horner over the radio in congratulating Verstappen on a 48th career win and Red Bull's 15th of the season. Verstappen defended against the McLarens at the start, with Norris seizing the opportunity to pass Piastri and slot into second place. His final retirement ended Red Bull's 100% finishing record for the season.

Norris calls for harsher penalties for impeding

Norris, a good friend of Verstappen, said the Dutch driver should certainly have been penalised for impeding AlphaTauri's Yuki Tsunoda. "It should just be harsher penalties for blocking people, because so many people do it. Verstappen told reporters separately that every case was different. He was cleared entirely of impeding Williams' Logan Sargeant after the American told stewards he did not believe the champion was at fault. And it's happened a lot this season, it's happened to me quite a few times, especially with certain teams," said Norris.

Team mate Carlos Sainz was 0.078 slower in a session with yellow flags to warn drivers of monitor lizards crossing the track. Verstappen has yet to win in Singapore, or start on pole there, and Red Bull had identified Ferrari as the main threat coming into the weekend after their strong performance in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. "I think this track is going to be one of the toughest of the season for us," Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told Sky Sports television. "There's a lizard again on the track, bit smaller this time," said Verstappen, who encountered a much bigger one on the same track in 2016, over the team radio.

Marko, 80, apologised last week after referring to Perez as a "South American" who was less focused than dominant Red Bull team mate Max Verstappen or the team's now-retired champion Sebastian Vettel. "We can confirm that Helmut Marko has received a written warning and been reminded of his responsibilities as a public figure in motor sport in line with the FIA Code of Ethics," said an FIA spokesman at the Singapore Grand Prix. Perez said on Thursday he had accepted a personal apology from Marko, whose comments continued to provoke a strong reaction in the paddock. It was not the first time Marko had referred to Perez as a South American, although the Mexican comes from Guadalajara which is geographically in North America. "I'm Italian so I know that sometimes we have been facing the same comments," said Alfa Romeo's Alessandro Alunni Bravi.

The 21-year-old New Zealander was drafted in by the Red Bull-owned team after Australian Ricciardo broke his hand in practice for last month's Dutch Grand Prix, missing that race and the Italian Grand Prix. Ricciardo, who returned to the paddock ahead of this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix to be with the team engineers, could also miss the Japanese round at Suzuka on Sept. 24. And I don't think I can settle for anything less," Lawson told reporters. Lawson has been racing in Japan this year and has competed previously at Suzuka. Verstappen hits back at Wolff over 'Wikipedia' comment

Wolff made his comments after this month's Italian Grand Prix, where Mercedes were beaten by both Ferraris as well as the two Red Bulls. Asked at the Singapore Grand Prix for his reaction, Verstappen said he was not disappointed. Verstappen, who is 145 points clear of team mate Sergio Perez in the championship and set for a third title well before the end of the season, suggested Wolff should focus on his own team. "We knew that we just had to work harder, try to be better and try to get to that level. Hamilton is currently fourth in the standings, 200 points behind Verstappen.

The Dutch driver's victory on a sunny afternoon at Monza's "Temple of Speed" outside Milan was also Red Bull's 15th in succession -- another Formula One record that looks set to continue. Verstappen stretched his lead in the standings over Perez to 145 points with eight rounds remaining. Red Bull lead Mercedes in the constructors' championship by 310 points with Ferrari moving up to third. "Well done mate, you are on your own, that is history," team boss Christian Horner told Verstappen over the radio after he took the chequered flag. No win but Ferrari thrill home crowd with podium battle

Spaniard Sainz, who had started on pole, prevailed for a third place finish with Leclerc fourth and only 0.184 of a second behind. Fred Vasseur, experiencing his first Monza as Ferrari principal, had told his drivers in the closing stages that they could race without taking risks but they may have had a different interpretation to the Frenchman. For Ferrari fans the battle was a highlight of a race that ended in a Red Bull one-two and Max Verstappen taking a record 10th win in a row. Leclerc pushed hard to get past, both cars locking up into turn one with smoking tyres, leaving Ferrari fans with hearts in mouth. It's always been a pleasure to race Charles whenever we've had the chance," Sainz told reporters after a wave of red-shirted fans spilled out of the grandstands to celebrate in front of the podium.

Verstappen goes for a record 10th win in a row

Verstappen won the Italian Grand Prix from seventh on the starting grid last year with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc on pole but finishing second. Red Bull have won every race so far this season, 14 in a row including the 2022 finale in Abu Dhabi, and are again favourites at Monza's fast layout. Since Lewis Hamilton's fifth Italian GP win with Mercedes in 2018 no driver has managed a repeat victory in the former royal park outside Milan. Talk of a 'Monza jinx' may be premature but this is a season where straws are being clutched more desperately. For Gasly, who lives in Milan, it is effectively a home race and one with a special place in his heart.

Vasseur wary of commenting on Massa's legal claim
  + stars: | 2023-08-23 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Lawyers for Brazilian Massa last week notified Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali and Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the governing FIA, of the intent to claim compensation. An FIA spokesperson last week acknowledged receipt of "correspondence" from Massa's representatives and said the matter was under review. The scandal, widely known as 'Crashgate', did not emerge until a year later and led to Renault team bosses being banned. Vasseur said teams wanted to know the result of races at the chequered flag and not after the podium celebrations had happened. The Frenchman, who was Renault team boss in 2016, took over at Ferrari in January and was not in Formula One in 2008.

"Simply put, Mr Massa is the rightful 2008 Driver's Champion, and F1 and FIA deliberately ignored the misconduct that cheated him out of that title," said the letter. There was no immediate response from the FIA and Formula One, which is currently on an August shutdown. PIQUET CRASHMassa was leading the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix from pole position when fellow Brazilian Piquet crashed into the wall on lap 14 of 61. The lawyers' letter warned that, without a satisfactory response, Massa intended to "pursue legal action in order to seek compensation for the harm he has suffered." Massa did not win again after 2008, with the Brazilian suffering a near-fatal head injury at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Red Bull have won 23 of the last 26 races, and 17 of the last 18, and will be only the fifth constructor to hit 100. Verstappen won last year in Canada from pole position ahead of Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, the seven times world champion who has won a record-equalling seven times there. "Of course, last year's win is still in my mind so hopefully we can do something similar this weekend," said Verstappen. Mercedes overtook Aston Martin for second place in the constructors' standings after Spain, where they were Red Bull's closest rivals. Ferrari received a morale boost last weekend when they won the Le Mans 24 Hours and enjoyed a strong weekend in Montreal last year.

Hamilton no fan of Florida Governor DeSantis

A long-time champion of LGBTQ+ rights, Hamilton will have a Rainbow Flag on his helmet for Sunday's race and said he stands with the gay, lesbian and transgender community that has come under attack by DeSantis. DeSantis, who has declared Florida is "where woke comes to die", recently passed a law banning classroom discussion of sexuality and gender identity with younger children, dubbed by critics as the "don't say gay" bill. Hamilton has used his global platform and celebrity to campaign for everything from diversity and racial equality to LGBTQ+ rights. "We think having someone like Fernando is really, really important to make the next step as a team," Krack added. Aston Martin have had 11 top 10 finishes this season, with Vettel's sixth place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix their best result. "You need to learn to manage champions, which we already did with Sebastian," Krack added. "I would not even say Sebastian is that difficult to manage if you are transparent, honest and straight.
