The Battery Maritime Building is the last of New York City’s old East River ferry terminals: a beaux-arts building with the iron-and-glass look of 19th-century Paris expos, studded with rivets the size of macarons. After the structure’s completion in 1909, Brooklyn-bound commuters gathered there over the course of three decades until bridges and tunnels rendered ferry service somewhat obsolete. (In fact, public ferries to and from Governors Island continue to dock at the building’s slips.) It was earmarked for preservation status in the second half of the 20th century, then subjected to a series of failed development...

President-elect Joe Biden has announced his nominees to fill key several key Cabinet posts, but who are the Trump appointees who will remain at the top of some of America's other government institutions? Given Trump's abuse of campaign finance laws, Congress should carefully examine his FEC nominees and continue monitoring the commission's actions and inaction in a post-Trump world. Unlike many other Trump appointees, OGE Director Emory Rounds has performed admirably during the first three years of his five-year term. However, given Trump's demands for political loyalty from his appointees, Congress must carefully review whether Trump's IG appointees and nominees demonstrate a fidelity to the public that their roles demand or allegiance to the president who appointed them. While several of the Trump appointees who will remain in government can play a crucial role in that work, others have undermined our institutions and resisted reform.

Schools should not play a role in arranging student-athletes' NIL deals or activities. Student-athletes' NIL activities cannot interfere with schools' efforts in the areas of diversity, inclusion, or gender equity. Student-athletes must disclose all NIL ventures, relationships, and contracts with agents to their schools and a third-party administrator to be named. In late April, the NCAA Board of Governors announced its support for proposed rule changes that would allow student-athletes to monetize their NIL. In the meantime, thousands of student-athletes — and many more agents and advertisers — will be waiting eagerly to turn their personal brands into business.

For-profit colleges are faring better than their public and private nonprofit counterparts during the pandemic, according to higher education researcher Molly Ott. She says students are attending for-profit colleges because of their additional flexibility, financial resources, and expertise in remote learning strategies. In contrast, at public and private nonprofit four-year universities, enrollment fell by about 1.4% and 2%, respectively. Factors behind the trendWhy are more students attending for-profit colleges in the middle of a pandemic? Given the recent presidential election results, I also suspect the increase in for-profit enrollment may be short-lived.

It also paves the way for Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to receive regular national security briefings that Trump also gets. On Tuesday, Biden and Harris are expected to formally introduce their appointments to critical national security and foreign policy positions in Wilmington, Delaware. The Biden transition team said meetings would begin with federal officials on Washington’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, along with discussions of national security issues. The letter came shortly after Michigan officials certified Biden as the victor in their state.

Trump’s effort to prevent Biden, a Democrat, from taking office on Jan. 20 likely will be doomed if officials confirm Biden as the winner of the votes in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Biden beat Trump in Michigan by more than 150,000 votes, or almost 3 percentage points, and the election canvassing board is required to validate the count. Ron Klain, the incoming White House chief of state, said on Sunday that Biden will announce his first Cabinet picks on Tuesday. The Trump campaign’s focus remains on an increasingly desperate quest to delay certification of the election results in several states, an effort that has mostly met with failure. The US is fighting against a surge of new cases of coronavirus across the country. Governors of Iowa, Utah, and North Dakota all enforced their first statewide mask mandate this month. The governors cited alarming increases of coronavirus cases in each state that prompted the new mask mandates and caused them to change their stances on the policies. As more people congregate indoors in the cold weather and pandemic fatigue leads to more risk-taking behavior, data shows an alarming surge of new daily coronavirus cases. Here's how the governors of Utah, Iowa, and South Dakota eventually ordered the policies in response to the country's third wave.

The ruling effectively bars U.S. Agency for Global Media CEO Michael Pack from making personnel decisions and interfering in editorial operations. Pack, a conservative filmmaker, Trump ally and onetime associate of former Trump political adviser Steve Bannon, made no secret of his intent to shake up the agency after taking over in June. In July, Pack had ordered an investigation into the posting of a video package featuring now President-elect Joe Biden on a VOA website. Fourteen senior VOA journalists sent a letter to management in August protesting Pack’s actions, including the dismissal of foreign journalists and his comments denigrating VOA staff, which they said were endangering their colleagues and the international broadcaster’s credibility. The global media agency did not immediately respond to a written request for comment on the ruling.

The United States topped 12 million cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, as the third wave's uncontrolled spread prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to urge Americans not to travel for Thanksgiving. The country recorded more than 200,000 coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 12,002,863, according to NBC News' tally.
