Meta's mandatory return to office is 'a mess'

Meta's return to office mandate has gone about as well as the metaverse so far. One person noted that, after days of trying to get a room for a meeting at Meta's campus in Menlo Park, a small room became available. They assume the backlog of remote work applications to be "in the thousands." Coming in to be on ZoomOne employee noted their team is mostly in other offices. Others are in the same boat, at least for several more weeks, as they wait for remote work applications to be approved.

There have been many changes at Meta and the RTO stance may cause more unrest, an expert told CNBC. Other tech firms that ordered staff to work in the office some or all of the time sparked backlash. AdvertisementAdvertisementMeta's stance on remote work shows it's talking tough, but given that other tech companies have faced a backlash over RTO directives, it's unlikely that Meta will have an easier ride. The new policy could be disruptive for Meta staff and affect trust within the company, according to one expert. "Establishing trustworthiness is an essential part of being a leader, and it takes empathy to create that trust," Gardner told CNBC.

The push to get workers back to offices could put millions of jobs at risk if people don't comply. What makes this even more difficult to swallow for Meta employees is just how quickly Meta's tone has changed. In June, they were informed about the need to come into the office three days a week from September 5, per The Information. AdvertisementAdvertisementAmazon is making a similar play to Meta, with a return-to-office strategy that involves scare tactics. But since few people can afford to be out of a job right now, employers may get their way.

The company is putting in place detailed and mandatory rules for in-office and remote work. See new rules on badge tracking, monthly evaluations, and remote workers only allowed in-office a few days per quarter. Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg used to say remote work was the way of the future . Meta's guidelines appear to be tailored specifically to avoid remote workers having their cake, and eating it, too. Both will be evaluated monthly, for in-office and remote workers, and employees found to be non-compliant will be notified.

Meta in June said it wanted workers to come into the office three days a week. Employees already approved for fully remote work do not have to comply with the three-day per week mandate. Managers at Meta will be responsible for following up with workers on a monthly basis, making sure they are complying with RTO. The strange, improbable rise of Mark Zuckerberg 3.0

In early July, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the latest and perhaps most consequential product in Meta's history: a new model of Mark Zuckerberg. Silicon Valley Zuck was a husband and father with a legacy to build and protect at all costs. Silicon Valley Zuck was suddenly faced with something he'd never dealt with before, shrinking revenue. Still clinging to his persona as Silicon Valley Zuck, Zuckerberg engaged in an all-out media blitz to hawk his vision for the metaverse. They were the sort of people Harvard Zuck would have scoffed at and Silicon Valley Zuck would have gently ignored.

Mentors can give us advice and guidance, helping us in ways that others, who are too close to the problem, never can. When I sought her advice, she didn't tell me where I should choose to go; instead, she gave me this kernel of wisdom. He advised me to defer my acceptance and try to get into business school instead. I was about to learn that the skills that make you a great individual contributor PM do not always make you a great manager. If you don't have a mentor, I highly recommend finding one (check out my last post on mentors for tips!).
On Wednesday, thousands of Meta workers received early morning emails on if they still had jobs. Meta began another round of layoffs on Wednesday, and employees were again left to figure out for themselves which jobs, levels, and teams were impacted by the cuts. How the layoffs happenedThousands of tech and engineering workers received emails over the course of about two hours on Wednesday morning. Laid off workers generally received 16 weeks of severance and benefits coverage for a year, as those laid off in November received. Impacted jobsHere is a running list of what types of jobs and certain teams at Meta were impacted by this round of layoffs.
Meta updated its "community engagement expectations" on Tuesday, Fortune reported. The new rules ban staff discussions of abortion, gun rights, and vaccines, the publication said. "We're doing this to ensure that internal discussions remain respectful, productive, and allow us to focus," Goler wrote, per Fortune. The new rules do not apply to employees that are required to address the topics as a part of their roles at Meta. Meta is one of several tech companies that has instituted policies to address social and political discussions at work.
The range includes layoffs and "non-regrettable" exits by staff who managers aren't sad to see go. The higher range includes already laid-off employees and "non-regrettable attrition," a term for staff considered not critical to operations who managers would not be sad to see leave. NRA, as it's also known inside Meta, includes people who quit of their own accord and those who are let go after being deemed underperformers. "Unregretted attrition" includes employees Amazon considers low-performing who are often pressured out via notorious performance-management programs. Shortly after the recent layoffs, Meta revealed it was looking to shrink its office footprint and would continue its current hiring freeze well into 2023.
The employees are members of Meta's Sourcer Development Program, intended to help workers from diverse backgrounds obtain careers in corporate technology recruiting. The Sourcer Development Program is part of Meta's Pathways program, which helps people with non-traditional professional backgrounds obtain apprenticeships at the social networking giant for various roles. Several members of Meta's Sourcer Development Program told CNBC they joined Meta in April as part of the company's latest cohort. After completing the 12-month program, the employees would then be converted to full-time employees if they met the necessary criteria. The impacted Meta workers said they have not received any replies from Meta's human resources and management staff explaining their situation.
