Utility stocks are an affordable way to gain exposure to the artificial intelligence trend and hedge against a slowing economy even after the sector's recent rally, according to Goldman Sachs. Yet, utility stocks still remain relatively affordable. Goldman is forecasting above consensus earnings growth of 2% on average in 2026 for the 16 utility stocks it covers. NextEra , Xcel Energy , Sempra and Southern Company offer the best exposure to the data center power demand surge among Goldman's buy-rated stocks, according to the bank. "However, a return to a rising bond yield environment could weigh on the performance of utilities," the Goldman analysts said.

Nvidia has been the biggest story of Wall Street's rally to record highs, but the options market appears to be underestimating the impact of its earnings report Wednesday, according to Goldman Sachs. "NVDA options suggest investors expect this earnings report to be unusually important; NVDA options imply a +/-11.9% earnings-day move vs. its 4-quarter historical earnings-day move of +/-10.8%. The importance of this earnings report is easy to see given NVDA options volume has been 36% of all single stock options volumes over the past three months," the note said. The S & P 500 is a market cap-weighted index, meaning that Nvidia has taken on extra importance over the past two years. The options market has underpriced S & P 500 moves following the previous four Nvidia reports as well, according to Goldman.

The Wall Street investment bank analyzed the holdings of 707 hedge funds with $2.7 trillion of gross equity positions at the start of the second quarter. Goldman found that hedge funds added to under-the-radar winners across the entire AI universe, particularly players in infrastructure, including Marvell Technology , TD Synnex , AES Corporation and Littelfuse . Copper miner Freeport-McMoRan and solar tracking company Nextracker, both involved in AI's power production, also saw increased popularity among hedge funds. Hedge funds also trimmed positions in other megacap stocks benefiting from the AI enthusiasm, including Microsoft , Meta Platforms and Amazon . The lack of female leadership in the financial industry is nothing new, but many companies have been making strides. But as I watch senior women continue their exodus from Goldman, I'm not sure the company actually wants to change. While many companies have modernized to embrace hybrid and remote work, Goldman has not. Rather than changing its "be in the office every day and grind it out" culture to better suit women, Goldman puts the onus on us to change ourselves to fit the model. But Goldman leadership seems to want the benefits of gender diversity without the hard work of supporting diverse leadership styles.

As meme stocks once again dominate discourse on Wall Street, a Goldman Sachs basket is benefiting as hedge funds try to cover themselves. Goldman's "short basket," known officially as the GS Most Short Rolling Index, has jumped along with the resurgence of the meme-stock craze seen this week. When the original meme-stock mania took place, hedge funds rushed to cover their short positions as everyday investors squeezed them. GameStop short sellers lost almost $1 billion in Monday's rally.
