(Which is ironic, given that one of the priorities of the roadmap is making sure AI doesn’t, like, hijack the American electoral process.) All of that money was able flood in because the notoriously tech-challenged lawmakers in Washington have been largely asleep at the wheel. (European officials, meanwhile, formally adopted the world’s first standalone AI law this spring, a full five years after rules were proposed.) Until recently, AI was a largely academic subject rarely discussed outside of Silicon Valley. ”AI companies have strong financial incentives to avoid effective oversight,” they wrote in an open letter this week.

Roughly halfway between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the coastal town of Paraty (population 45,000) isn’t the easiest place to reach. It’s that relative seclusion that keeps the tourist hordes and unbridled development at bay, despite the town’s obvious appeal. African slaves not only worked in the mines but built much of the town’s early infrastructure, such as its roads. At the end of the 19th century, Santos, 190 miles to the south, supplanted Paraty as the country’s primary coffee-exporting port, and the town began to languish.

It also reflects that there's money in the system — but Chinese consumers are just really not that keen on dropping their hard-earned cash at Starbucks or Gucci. China's demand for gold jewelry softened in the first quarter of this year due to the surge in gold prices but was still holding up well, according to the council. Gen Z Chinese consumers ditch luxury for goldUnlike the rush into gold assets, Chinese consumers are not running out to buy even more stuff, particularly foreign imports. China's savings rate was around 32% last year — compared to around 4% in the US, according to a McKinsey analysis of official data. "Chinese households are increasingly confronted by the weak long-term Chinese growth outlook and the slumping prices in China's residential real estate market," said Biswas.

Nvidia stock can't keep climbing forever, according to DA Davidson analyst Gil Luria. The Wall Street veteran sees a decline of as much as 20% in Nvidia stock in the next few years. Nvidia stock soared 9% on Thursday to record highs after its reported earnings. The company defied analyst expectations yet again, and said that demand for its AI chips continues to outstrip demand. Wall Street analysts were impressed by the results, with a slew of price target increases hitting the tape Thursday morning. Wedbush: "AI revolution just getting started"Analysts at Wedbush said the "AI gold rush" is just getting started as a "tidal wave" of spending on AI chips hits the entire tech sector. Nvidia's Hopper chips include the H100, which was announced in 2022 and faced severe supply shortages last year as the AI gold rush intensified. Tuesday's AWS news represents a pushout in demand for Nvidia chips, not a loss of it. That would be the so-called "digestion" phase for AI chips that Wall Street has been speculating about since last year. If anything, AWS deciding to wait for the more-powerful Blackwell chips could mean the digestion phase is further out on the horizon than initially thought. Unlike last year, when Nvidia's chips were in such short supply, there are now rival chips out there, such as AMD's MI300X, which is angling for a corner of the inferencing market .

OpenAI announced it would pull one of the ChatGPT voices named "Sky" after it created controversy for its resemblance to the voice of actress Scarlett Johansson in "Her," a movie about artificial intelligence. "We've heard questions about how we chose the voices in ChatGPT, especially Sky," the Microsoft -backed company posted on X. The news comes one week after OpenAI debuted a range of audio voices for ChatGPT, its viral chatbot, a new AI model called GPT-4o, and a desktop version of ChatGPT. Users watching the live demonstration of ChatGPT's audio capabilities immediately began to post on social media that the "Sky" voice sounded like Johansson in the movie. Ahead of summer 2024, hosts face pressure to stand out from all the other listings in their areas. Adding additional stress is the increased unpredictability of travelers themselves — hosts say guests are booking trips more last-minute than the advance-planning of years past. With direct bookings, hosts are responsible for collecting the proper paperwork for background checks and payment information, and they don't have the additional insurance offered by the major platforms. Influencers can also help promote direct booking, Burke said.
