A Florida school district, facing pressure about “nudity” in schools, removed from shelves a picture book that showed an illustration of a goblin’s bare bottom. Some students were saved from debauchery when school officials colored in a pair of pants on the goblin. “The freedom to read is under assault in the United States — particularly in public schools,” PEN America warned in a report last year. Listen to conservatives, and they argue that the crisis in American schools is the opposite: It’s about leftist teachers propagandizing on critical race theory and giving kids new pronouns while denying them safe bathrooms. Donald Trump has promised to defund “any school that’s pushing critical race theory, transgender insanity and any other inappropriate racial, sexual or political content on our children.” He added: “This is what must be done to save our country from destruction.”

If you feel like you’re drowning in neologisms lately, you’re not delulu. The uptick in coinages has been noted by culture writers and TikTok users alike. There’s even a meme for slang overload, though it has been around since 2020. Girl dinner, an informal phrase credited to the TikTok user Olivia Maher that describes a light, charcuterie board-like meal, was inducted as an entry on Dictionary.com this month. It joins other newly inducted informal nouns and slang terms — including bussin’, the ick and pretty privilege — whose rise has been driven at least in part by social media.

As video game worlds get more expansive, some game studios are experimenting with AI tools to give voice to a potentially unlimited number of characters and conversations. Some fear that AI voices could replace all but the most famous human actors if big studios have their way. SAG-AFTRA has already made a deal with one AI voice company, Replica Studios, announced last month at the CES gadget show in Las Vegas. It sets terms that also allow performers to opt out of having their voices used in perpetuity. We’re not replacing actors.”It was Replica Studios that first reached out to Magee about a voice-over audio clip he had created demonstrating a Scottish accent.

London CNN —Language experts choosing the Oxford word of the year 2023 were dazzled by a bright young thing, selecting a relative newcomer, “rizz,” for the top spot. Derived from the word “charisma,” “rizz” refers to a person’s ability to attract a romantic partner through “style, charm or attractiveness,” dictionary publisher Oxford University Press (OUP) said in its announcement Monday. The word received more than 32,000 votes from the public, OUP added. While word of the year contenders do not need to be new words, they must have a significance to the year in question. In 2022, Oxford’s word of the year was “goblin mode,” a colloquial term for behavior that is unapologetically lazy in a way that rejects social norms.

In the new "Spider-Man 2" Playstation 5 game, the mortgage on Aunt May's house is revealed. Fans online are losing their minds over the eye-watering sum, but is our favorite web-slinging superhero's mortgage loan really that bad? During one scene in the new video game, Parker and his flame, MJ Watson, return to Aunt May's house in Forest Hills. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe game's developer, Insomniac, thankfully gave us a hand in figuring out what kind of loan Peter is facing. Angelo Gionis, senior vice president at Contour Mortgage, told Insider that while he wouldn't say it was a super deal, Spider-Man's mortgage was fair — if it was actually a second mortgage Aunt May took out.

Auto racing has helped sell products from Budweiser to Viagra, motor oil to Martini & Rossi, and seemingly every gasoline and cigarette brand. Now, with Formula 1 making huge inroads in the United States — supercharged by the hit Netflix documentary series “Drive to Survive” — we’ll see if it can sell Aston Martins. A “Drive to Survive” camera crew trailed behind Stroll, whose son, Lance, drives one of the team’s cars that are punching above their weight. The next trick for his father is to reverse the brand’s serially shaky fortunes and get out of Ferrari’s shadow with wealthy buyers. Outside the fancy showroom, framed by one of the largest plate-glass windows in New York City, passers-by wear out smartphones taking photos of a Valkyrie AMR Pro inside, a goblin-green alien at rest.

After filing last week’s newsletter comparing “Succession” to a work of “Game of Thrones”-style fantasy, I recorded a podcast episode with Razib Khan in which we talked about our shared affection for actual fantasy novels, our experience as early George R.R. It was a wide-ranging conversation, but one that stayed mostly with the big names of the genre — Martin, J.R.R. To be clear, this isn’t a list of my all-time favorites or even a list of “fantasy novels that should be adapted for TV instead of making more seasons of ‘The Rings of Power.’” It’s just me turning a glance at my bookshelf into a newsletter. You can think of this list of novels, maybe, as various inspirations for that imagined perfection. Hobb’s hero, Fitz, is one of the most successful examples of character-building and compelling interiority in recent fantasy.

Quick question: Have you gone "goblin mode" yet this year? I've got more on goblin mode below, but first, let's talk about Salesforce, which is seeing more executive departures this week. The news of Butterfield's departure comes just days after Salesforce announced co-CEO Bret Taylor is also leaving the company — though Butterfield told staff the moves were unrelated. Oxford Languages, the publisher of Oxford English Dictionary, named "goblin mode" the 2022 Word of the Year — beating out semifinalist "metaverse." A look at what "goblin mode" means.
LONDON — Asked to sum up 2022 in a word, the public has chosen a phrase. Oxford Dictionaries said Monday that “goblin mode” has been selected by online vote as its word of the year. “Given the year we’ve just experienced, ‘goblin mode’ resonates with all of us who are feeling a little overwhelmed at this point,” said Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl. Despite being relatively unknown offline, goblin mode was the overwhelming favorite, winning 93% of the more than 340,000 votes cast. In 2021 the Oxford word of the year was “vax” and Merriam-Webster’s was “vaccine.”
If so, you might already be in “goblin mode” – chosen by the public as the 2022 Oxford word of the year. In its place is goblin mode – the opposite of trying to better yourself. The OUP word of the year – also known as the Oxford word of the year – was chosen by the public for the first time. A group of lexicographers at OUP gave people a choice of: “Goblin mode,” “metaverse,” and “#IStandWith.”“Goblin mode” triumphed, racking up 318,956 votes – 93% of the total. Hello goblin mode.
"Goblin mode" is Oxford English Dictionary's word of the year after going viral in February. Regarding "goblin mode," it wrote that it's "a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations." The headline, falsely attributed to Bollywood news site Pinkvilla, incorrectly quoted actress and model Julia Fox as saying that her ex Kanye West "didn't like when I went goblin mode," something she never said. "The term then rose in popularity over the months following as Covid lockdown restrictions eased in many countries and people ventured out of their homes more regularly," Oxford wrote about "goblin mode." But while "metaverse" couldn't top "goblin mode," maybe Zuckerberg can take solace that it gained enough traction to be in the running this year.
