The Dharavi slum, about three-quarters the size of New York's Central Park, featured in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning 2008 movie "Slumdog Millionaire". Only those who already lived in Dharavi before 2000, mostly ground-floor residents, will get free homes within the redevelopment. In interviews with Reuters, some Dharavi residents cited the billionaire's financial troubles as contributing to their concerns. Last month, a Mumbai court allowed SecLink to add Adani to its lawsuit, forcing the conglomerate to defend its position before judges. In early August, about 300 opposition supporters and residents gathered in Dharavi to object to Adani's involvement.

Morgan Stanley has named several buy-rated global stocks it expects to beat the market. "We expect Ozempic to drive a further upgrade to guidance before the 2Q results," the analysts wrote — the company reports on Aug. 10. Other drugmakers the bank is positive on are Grifols , where the bank expects a "solid performance," and Indivior , which is set for a "strong quarter," Morgan Stanley said. French materials manufacturer Saint-Gobain is also a Morgan Stanley pick, with the bank saying that consensus has not yet priced in its management's optimism on margins discussed at its annual general meeting last month. "While another positive beat ratio looks likely for 2Q23, a slowdown in global and European economic momentum suggests that the magnitude of the said beat will be closer to normal levels," they added.

"There's no real consensus at the moment about the increase in interest rates among economic actors," Jeremie Delecourt, chief operating officer at French private equity fund Ardian, told Reuters. In the euro zone, the peak is near after a combined 4 percentage points rise in the past year, ECB policymaker and French central bank governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau said on a panel at the conference. But he also said that rates would be left high for as long as necessary to ensure that inflation is headed back to the European Central Bank's 2% target by 2025. The ECB raised interest rates to their highest level in 22 years last month and promised another hike this month, with possibly another in September. "I see quite a bit of optimism in the short term, but I see a lot of downside risks if there is a policy mistake, especially from the central banks," she added.

The case against Saint-Gobain and its local unit was filed to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in May by a retired glass industry executive, whose name was redacted in the documents as the person sought confidentiality. Saint-Gobain has a 44% share of the float glass market in India and a 19% share of the coated one, according to the documents. The group and its India unit, Saint-Gobain India Private Limited, "conduct their activities in compliance with laws", in particular competition law, it said. The May 25 case documents allege Saint-Gobain entered into agreements with glass processors, forcing them to "exclusively" purchase glass from the company or face stopped supplies if that obligation is not fulfilled. Saint-Gobain counts India as a key market.

Morgan Stanley predicted that European companies will beat market expectations for first-quarter earnings, citing the better-than-expected macro figures of the last few months. Strategists at the bank warned that these factors could lead to downgrades later in the year, alongside a 10% fall in full-year earnings per share. The table below shows five stocks highlighted by Morgan Stanley, where its analysts have a "high conviction" in results. The investment bank said Saint-Gobain isn't expected to beat market expectations when it reports first-quarter results on Apr. Morgan Stanley is also bullish toward London-listed Whitbread ahead of its full-year results on Apr.

European shares climb on Saint-Gobain, Elekta boost

Feb 24 (Reuters) - European shares opened higher on Friday, boosted by upbeat earnings reports from French construction materials giant Saint-Gobain and Swedish radiation therapy equipment Elekta. The STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) climbed 0.4% by 0811 GMT, keeping with a rise in Asian markets after the Bank of Japan ruling out an early end to super-easy monetary policy pushed bond yields lower globally. Compagnie de Saint-Gobain (SGOB.PA) gained 5.5%, pushing the European construction and materials index (.SXOP) up 0.8% after it posted record annual revenue that exceeded analysts' expectations on strong growth in all its regions on Thursday. Elekta (EKTAb.ST) jumped 7.7%, to the top of the STOXX 600 after positive third-quarter earnings. German chemicals giant BASF SE (BASFn.DE) fell 3.7% as it flagged a decline in annual earnings and said it plans to cut 2,600 jobs and halt buybacks.
A lawyer for Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary said in a statement that the company would seek a rehearing of the panel’s decision by the full 3rd Circuit court. Gordon’s strategy worked in bankruptcy court but set up J&J for failure when it faced the 3rd Circuit appeals panel. Gordon, at the bankruptcy conference, described the lawsuits as “completely unmanageable” and a dire threat to J&J that could go on for decades. The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to hear arguments in coming months on a challenge to the 3M subsidiary’s bankruptcy. The litigation, they asserted, should be allowed to proceed against Georgia-Pacific because the parent company did not file for bankruptcy.
Jan 30 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Monday shot down Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ.N) attempt to offload tens of thousands of lawsuits over its talc products into bankruptcy court. The appeals court ruling revives those lawsuits. Monday's decision by the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia dismissed the bankruptcy filed by the J&J subsidiary in 2021. The appeals court decision could force companies considering the strategy to more carefully consider its risks, two legal experts said. The Texas two-step has garnered criticism from Democratic lawmakers in Washington, and inspired proposed legislation that would severely restrict the practice.

CTM representatives say their unions defend worker rights, offer perks such as scholarships and sports programs and abide by Mexico's new labor rules. Along with La Liga, other new unions have also won victories over powerful rivals in the past year at GM, Japan's Panasonic (6752.T) and French glassmaker Saint-Gobain (SGOB.PA), pledging better pay. Even among the new crop, La Liga stands out for its broader vision: targeting companies no matter the sector, no matter the location. Leaving her three kids at home, she is traveling factory to factory seeking support. What's more, to drum up support, La Liga must fight a deeply embedded culture of fear and apathy around speaking out.
