When Sundar Pichai, Google’s chief executive, introduced a generative artificial intelligence feature for the company’s search engine last month, he and his colleagues demonstrated the new capability with six text-based queries that the public could try out. The questions included “how do you clean a fabric sofa” and “what should I use to get a coffee stain out of my carpet.” These were intended to highlight how Google’s new feature, A.I. Overviews, could generate full and useful information summaries above traditional search results. But by Friday, only one of the six queries still yielded an A.I. Users loudly complained on social media about the mistakes, in many cases outright making fun of Google.

Google is scaling back AI-generated answers in search results due to errors and criticism. The AI Overviews feature, launched two weeks ago, faced backlash for false and absurd responses. AdvertisementGoogle is pulling back the use of AI-generated answers in search results after the feature made some infamous errors, including telling users to put glue in their pizza sauce. The glue pizza search result was traced back to a comment from a Redditor who went by "fucksmith" making an obvious joke on the subreddit r/Pizza. Because I'm both brave and a genius, naturally, I had to try to make the glue pizza myself. Was Google's response to tamp down its big AI search ambitions just because a few jokesters on X made silly queries? The ridiculousness of those AI answers does call into question the entire concept of using AI for Google search results. And I like to convince myself that my eating glue pizza was part of the noise that prompted Google to act.

Last week, Google unveiled its biggest change to search in years, showcasing new artificial intelligence capabilities that answer people’s questions in the company’s attempt to catch up to rivals Microsoft and OpenAI. The incorrect answers in the feature, called AI Overview, have undermined trust in a search engine that more than two billion people turn to for authoritative information. chatbots tell lies and act weird, the backlash demonstrated that Google is under more pressure to safely incorporate A.I. The launch also extends a pattern of Google’s having issues with its newest A.I.
