Delivering the right compute, from cloud to edgeEnormous cloud data centers process most of the world's big AI workloads today because they can do so more efficiently at scale. Arm technology is also designed to follow and support AI workloads as they increasingly get distributed outside the cloud to edge devices. HONG KONG, Feb 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The open-source software movement has been an unprecedented driver of global innovation and productivity growth. As with most Chinese handset makers, founder Ren Zhengfei relied on Android’s open-source code to run his company’s smartphones. Beijing has reciprocated, per a Nikkei report, by instructing its own tech companies not to incorporate ChatGPT into their platforms - a rare example of a mutual firewall. Dividing the world into competing open-source camps would mark another reverse for free trade. Follow @petesweeneypro on TwitterCONTEXT NEWSRegulators have told major Chinese tech companies not to offer ChatGPT services, the Nikkei news service reported on Feb. 22 citing sources with direct knowledge, causing shares in Chinese companies building chatbots to fall.
Singapore's tech start-up scene has grown in recent years, and the city-state ranked seventh in the latest Global Innovation Index 2022. Global venture dollars may have dropped in 2022, but Singapore's government-owned tech investment firm is optimistic about 2023. "2023 is probably going to be a pretty decent year for venture capital in Singapore," Hsien-Hui Tong, executive director of investments at SGInnovate, told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" Wednesday. Unlike global markets more generally, the venture capital scene in Singapore is "still very active," Tong said. Global markets, on the other hand, tend to be at the "more mature" stages of Series B and C, where venture capital has "dried up a little bit."
JERUSALEM, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Israel urged mobile firms to expand the deployment of fifth-generation sites to allow for 'smart' stadiums and hospitals on Wednesday, as the country launched its second 5G tender. Communications Ministry director general Liran Avisar Ben Horin said in a statement that smart traffic lights using 5G would prevent congestion and accidents, while patients will be able to receive immediate medical care remotely. "I call on the cellular companies to deploy 5G sites all over the country to improve the quality of life of their customers and place Israel at the forefront of global innovation," she said. The ministry said it will allocate advanced frequencies to mobile operators in the ultra-fast 26 GHz range "to respond to the various needs of cellular communication in Israel." Israel allocated three 5G frequencies - 700 MHz, 2.6 GHz and 3.5 GHz - in an auction in 2019 which have since been deployed by mobile operators and are all marginally profitable.
