Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers. The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald. Days 9 and 10 43 miles, through the original heart of Switzerland and the turquoise lakes of the canton of Glarus. This is the heart of Switzerland — the original cantons that formed the Old Swiss Confederacy, the precursor to the modern-day country.

I recently traveled to Switzerland with my mom, brother, and grandmother to see where my grandmother had immigrated from over 70 years ago. She moved to the US and left her family behindMy 91-year-old grandmother, who we lovingly call Grosi, left for the United States when she was 20. Related storiesI felt the weight of the country's history, being able to map back to where everything happened for my grandmother and her family. Every moment, I had gratitude for traveling with my grandmother and family, seeing the strength and courage it took to leave it behind. The trip deepened my love and respect for my grandmother, her sacrifices to start a new life, and her strength to travel to a place where she knew no one.
