CNN —It is not uncommon to see certain teams emerge as dark horses or surprise packages at international tournaments, but few could have predicted that Austria would be the story of Euro 2024. Petr David Josek/APRangnick’s redemptionPerhaps the most compelling aspect of Austria’s Euro 2024 campaign has been the reminder of Rangnick’s abilities as a manager. He had various stints with German clubs such as Stuttgart, Hannover and Schalke but is best known for his work with Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg and German team RB Leipzig. Form soon picked up though and Das Team booked its ticket to Euro 2024 after losing only one game in the qualifying stages.

It was a game that produced another World Cup shock as Japan came from behind to win 2-1. “We wanted to use our captain’s armband to take a stand for values that we hold in the Germany national team: diversity and mutual respect,” the DFB said. Germany captain Manuel Neuer also did not wear the armband on Wednesday. Before the game, Faeser had criticized FIFA, slamming the threat of sanctions for wearing the armband. “In today’s times it is incomprehensible that FIFA does not want people to openly stand for tolerance and against discrimination.
DOHA, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Germany players placed their hands over their mouths during a team photo ahead of their game against Japan for their World Cup Group E on Wednesday as the row over FIFA's threat of sanctions over the "OneLove" armband continued. Germany's Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, sitting next to FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the stands, sported the armband as she chatted with the football administrator. Earlier, she had criticised FIFA, saying the threat of sanctions was a mistake and not acceptable behaviour. "In today's times it is incomprehensible that FIFA does not want people to openly stand for tolerance and against discrimination. A statement from the German Football Association (DFB) said: "We wanted to use our captain’s armband to take a stand for values that we hold in the Germany national team: diversity and mutual respect.
BERLIN—Germany will nationalize key German and European arms of Russian natural gas giant Gazprom PJSC and spend more than 13 billion euros, equivalent to $13.44 billion, to shore up the business in a bid to guarantee energy supplies, the German government said Monday. Berlin in March assumed management of the assets of Gazprom Germania GmbH, changing the company’s name to Securing Energy for Europe GmbH or SEFE. The government said it had to secure vital energy infrastructure and supplies in the early days of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

BERLIN, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Germany will nationalise gas importer Sefe, formerly known as Gazprom Germania, the economy ministry said on Monday, in a move to protect it from bankruptcy and force Russia out of the company. Sefe was dropped by Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM) earlier this year and put under German state trusteeship in April. It has since received close to 10 billion euros ($10.3 billion) in state-backed credit lines. Under the ordered measures, Sefe will then issue new shares to the same nominal amount that will be subscribed by Germany. In addition to the nationalisation, Berlin also announced that it would boost Sefe's loan from state lender KfW to 13.8 billion euros from a previous 11.8 billion euros.

Berlin/London (CNN Business) Germany is nationalizing Uniper , its biggest importer of natural gas, as part of an €8 billion ($7.9 billion) plan to prevent an energy shortage this winter. Uniper provides 40% of the country's gas supply and is crucial for large companies and private consumers in Europe's biggest economy. But Habeck said the situation had "worsened dramatically" since Russia cut off gas supplies to Europe through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline indefinitely on September 1, citing an oil leak. Although gas supplies through Nord Stream 1 are suspended, Germany's gas reserves are filled at more than 90% capacity, European Storage provider GIE AGSI+ said on its website. Berlin/London CNN Business —Germany is nationalizing Uniper, its biggest importer of natural gas, as part of an €8 billion ($7.9 billion) plan to prevent an energy shortage this winter. The German government will hold around 99% of Uniper after injecting new capital and buying out its Finnish parent company Fortum (FOJCF), German Economy Minister Robert Habeck told journalists in Berlin on Wednesday. Uniper provides 40% of the country’s gas supply and is crucial for large companies and private consumers in Europe’s biggest economy. Under the rescue deal, the government committed to provide €7.7 billion ($7.8 billion) to cover potential future losses, while state-run bank KfW agreed to increase its credit facility by €7 billion ($7.1 billion). UK details subsidies for businessGermany is not alone in paying a very heavy price to overcome gas supply shortages.
Uniper has received billions in financial aid from the German government as a result of surging gas and electric prices following Russia's war in Ukraine. The German government on Wednesday agreed to the nationalization of utility Uniper as it strives to keep the industry afloat in the wake of a worldwide energy crisis. The German state is set to own around 98.5% of Uniper. Uniper is Germany's largest importer of gas, and has been squeezed by vastly reduced gas flows from Russia, which have sent prices soaring. Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom earlier this month indefinitely halted gas flows to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, a move Uniper CEO Klaus-Dieter Maubach told CNBC would exacerbate the company's struggles.

The difference — known as the breakeven rate — tells you how much inflation investors foresee. The five-year breakeven rate stands at 2.48%, down significantly from a high of 3.59% in March and not far off from the Fed's 2% target. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate sits at 2.4%. The Fed makes its latest policy announcement at 2 p.m. Coming tomorrow: The latest policy decisions from the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan and the Swiss National Bank.
Months of surging prices have seen governments roll out measures to curb retail power prices, slash energy taxes and give subsidies to bill-payers. If the cash governments have earmarked to nationalise, bail out or provide loans to ailing energy utilities was included, then EU governments have spent closer to 450 billion euros, the think-tank said. "Governments with more fiscal space will inevitably better manage the energy crisis by outcompeting their neighbours for limited energy resources over winter months." Germany, the EU's biggest economy, is by far the biggest spender in the bloc - setting aside 100 billion euros, versus 59 billion euros in Italy, or 200 million euros in Estonia, for example. The EU last week proposed bloc-wide measures to respond to sky-high energy prices, in a bid to overlay the patchwork of national responses with a coordinated reaction.
