CNN —German police on Sunday shot a man who threatened officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device in Hamburg, authorities said, hours before the city was set to host its first game for the Euro 2024 soccer tournament. The suspect had threatened officers in Hamburg’s famous St. Pauli district and was shot in the leg, according to Hamburg police. Germany is hosting hundreds of thousands of foreign fans at the the month-tournament, which began on Friday. Interior Minister Minister Nancy Faeser said on Thursday that authorities were on alert for Islamist-inspired attacks and violence associated with hooliganism, Reuters reported. She said authorities had the “Islamist scene firmly in their sights” but not specific threats had been identified.

CNN —Two Ukrainian servicemen were stabbed to death at a shopping center in southern Germany Saturday evening, by a suspected Russian national, German and Ukrainian authorities say. Both Ukrainian men were residents of the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and had been in Germany undergoing medical rehabilitation. A 57-year-old suspected Russian national was arrested at his home not far from the scene, according to German authorities. “On April 27, two Ukrainian citizens, men born in 1987 and 2001, were killed by stabbing in Murnau am Stafelsee, Bavaria, Germany, at a local shopping center. “According to preliminary information, the deceased citizens were military personnel undergoing medical rehabilitation in Germany,” the ministry said.

CNN —A Polish man has been charged over claims he assisted an alleged Russian plot to assassinate Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to authorities in Poland and Ukraine. Prosecutors said the man agreed to provide information to Russian spies about security at Rzeszów-Jasionka airport, in southeastern Poland, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the border with Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities said they uncovered the plot and handed key evidence to Polish officials, who then detained the accused on Polish territory. “Our security authorities have prevented possible explosive detonations that were intended to affect and undermine our military aid to Ukraine. BERLIN (Reuters) - German police have arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of planning violence endangering the state after he threatened to kill people in online posts and posted right-wing extremist and antisemitic content, officials said on Monday. Police in the western state of Hesse searched the apartment of the suspect last Wednesday and seized computers, arms and ammunition, the State Office of Criminal Investigation and the public prosecutor's office in Frankfurt said in a statement. The suspect had repeatedly published posts online in which he threatened to kill people for political reasons, it said. CNN —All fights to and from Hamburg Airport have been halted as of early Sunday morning local time, as German police attempt to “relieve” a hostage situation at the center of a “family drama,” according to an official spokesperson for Hamburg Police. A 35-year-old man smashed through security with his car at the airport Saturday and parked underneath an airplane, the spokesperson said. As of midnight Sunday, the driver was still in his car with his 4-year old daughter, the spokesperson added. A “substantial amount of special forces” are on the ground trying to resolve the hostage situation, the spokesperson said. The airport’s official website announced Saturday evening that it has grounded all flights due to a major police operation.

CNN —Germany announced Wednesday that it is ramping up its border controls with neighboring Poland and the Czech Republic to “limit human trafficking,” as the country faces fierce debate on its migration policy while asylum applications surge. Police will carry out “additional flexible checks and mobile controls along the smuggling routes at the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic,” Interior Minister Nancy Faeser told the press. The announcement came as the interior minister raised the possibility of implementing fixed controls along the borders with its two eastern neighbors this week. BERLIN (AP) — Germany is considering establishing short-term border controls with Poland and the Czech Republic to keep irregular migrants from entering the country, a government official said Friday. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag that setting up temporary police checks on border crossings would help Germany prevent the smuggling and trafficking of people. She added that the increased border checks would need to be combined with the already ongoing random police checks that are being carried out. Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic belong to the European Union's visa-free zone, commonly known as the Schengen Area. MUNICH, July 18 (Reuters) - Former Wirecard (WDIG.H) board member Jan Marsalek, who has been on the run since the implosion of the German payments company in 2020, has contacted a Munich court through his lawyer, according to the court and the public prosecutor's office. The turn of events comes amid a trial of Wirecard's former chief executive and marks the first known official communication from Marsalek, Wirecard's former chief operating officer, whose exact whereabouts have been unknown for several years. German police have been conducting an international search and had issued an arrest warrant for Marsalek, whom they accuse of "fraud in the billions". Spokespeople for the public prosecutor's office and the court confirmed on Tuesday that a letter from Marsalek's lawyer had been received, but did not comment on the content of the letter.
