A man convicted in the murder and robbery of Philadelphia rapper PnB Rock at a famous Los Angeles eatery was sentenced Monday to 31 years to life in prison. SAN DIEGO — The Home Depot agreed to a nearly $2 million settlement in a case that alleged it overcharged customers, charging more for items at checkout than the items' advertised prices. In an emailed statement responding to a request for comment about the settlement, Home Depot said, “To ensure consistency for our customers, we’ve updated the timing of our price changes." The settlement includes $1.7 million to be divided among the district attorneys' offices of Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Alameda, San Bernardino and Sonoma counties for consumer law enforcement. "This settlement is a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated and underscores our commitment to safeguarding the rights of consumers in our community," Gascón said. Home Depot, based in Atlanta, reported in a proxy statement in May that it earned nearly $22 billion in operating profit for the 2023 fiscal year.

New York CNN —Home Depot will pay nearly $2 million to settle a civil enforcement claim from California district attorneys that the home improvement company was engaging in false advertising and unfair competition. Such violations are called “scanner violations,” the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said in a press release Thursday. “False advertising and unfair competition are serious offenses that undermine consumer trust and distort the marketplace,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. The Los Angeles DA’s office said the company was cooperative in the investigation. The civil penalties are a drop in the bucket for the nation’s fifth-largest retailer.

CNN —A unique plant has become the first species in the United States to be exterminated from the wild by the compounding effects of rising seas, scientists say. The Key Largo tree cactus still exists in parts of the Caribbean, including Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, but the chances of it re-establishing naturally in the Florida Keys is basically “zero,” Gann said. The plant’s habitat was being swamped by saltwater from storms and high tides worsened by the rising sea. Sea levels around the Florida Keys have been rising by around an average 0.16 inches a year, or just over 8 inches since 1971, the researchers reported. Possley said more than 1-in-4 native plant species are critically threatened with regional extinction in South Florida.
