CNN —A powerful winter storm is pummeling parts of the Central Plains with blizzard conditions and is set to drop a blanket of snow from Colorado to Minnesota through Tuesday, threatening widespread power outages and treacherous road conditions. Blizzard warnings extend from northern Colorado and Kansas into parts of Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota on Monday. The event increased the likilihood of seeing the Aurora Borealis in parts of the Pacific Northwest, Northern Plains, Great Lakes and interior Northeast overnight Sunday.

The Northern Lights are expected to be visible from 17 states on Thursday. It includes places as far south as New York and Maryland, The Associated Press reported. You should get away from city lights between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time to get a good view. Thursday's lights are set to be more visible as the forecasted solar storm will result in increased auroral activity. According to the Geophysical Institute, in one rare event in 1958, the Northern Lights were even visible from Mexico City.

LIMA, July 5 (Reuters) - Peru's government declared a 60-day state of emergency for several southern towns on Wednesday as the country's most active volcano spews ash and gas. Ash from the Ubinas volcano in the Moquegua region some 1,200 kilometers (746 miles) southeast of the capital Lima, has risen to altitudes of 5,500 meters and has reached towns over 10 km away, the Geophysical Institute of Peru said. Wednesday's emergency declaration allows the government to take "exceptional measures and actions" to counter risks from the Ubinas volcano. The southern region of copper-producing Peru is home to some of the country's most important mines as well as a dozen active volcanoes. Peru is located within the "Pacific Ring of Fire," an area with a high incidence of earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Another study published in 2020 identified 37 volcanic structures apparently active in the past 2 million to 3 million years. Venus, with a diameter of about 7,500 miles (12,000 km), is slightly smaller than Earth. Its thick atmosphere - mainly carbon dioxide - traps in heat in a runaway greenhouse effect, rendering Venus the solar system's hottest planet.

QUITO, Dec 20 (Reuters) - The Ecuadorean Geophysical Institute on Tuesday detected a column of gases and ashes rising from the crater of the Cotopaxi volcano, as part of its ongoing eruptive activity, affecting several areas of capital city Quito with volcanic ash. The volcano's last eruptive activity took place between August and December 2015. Ecuador's Risk Management service said on its Twitter account that ash fall was light in affected areas, including Quito. The capital's airport operated normally on Tuesday, and said on its Twitter account that the ash fall had so far not affected its operations. Authorities are permanently monitoring Cotapaxi, which is one of the active volcanoes located throughout Ecuador and in the Galapagos Islands.

The last two quakes also came very shortly after the annual earthquake drill conducted every Sept. 19 to commemorate the devastating 1985 temblor. On the morning of Sept. 19, 1985, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the center, south and west of the country, leaving some 9,500 dead. “It’s really strange, but a lot of people already don’t like that day,” said Jorge Ornelas, a call center coordinator. Monday’s earthquake was the result of the “interaction of the Cocos plate with the North America plate,” which also generated the 1985 earthquake.
