☆ Japanese investors slow investments in overseas bonds and equities in Oct

According to the data, domestic investors accumulated a net 1.12 trillion yen ($7.40 billion) worth of overseas bonds last month in a third straight month of net buying. They also poured 736.6 billion yen into foreign equities, much lesser than about 1.17 trillion yen they put in the previous month. Japanese banks poured a net 609.2 billion yen into long-term overseas bonds last month after about 4.76 trillion yen worth of net buying a month ago. Meanwhile, trust accounts and insurers pulled out a net 210.8 billion yen and 270.6 billion yen, respectively. Year-to-date data indicated that Japanese investors were net purchasers of U.S. bonds, buying about 18.81 trillion yen worth by September, while they emerged as net sellers of European debt, offloading 1.25 trillion yen.

The hot new business class ticket within Asia is in fact, Hong Kong to Mumbai. Before the pandemic, more than half of the Asian top line of U.S. bulge bracket banks typically came from Greater China which includes the mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Overall, IPO fees in India have risen from 1% of proceeds in 2017 closer to 2% in recent years, LSEG data shows. Hong Kong bankers are not going to relocate to India any time soon but while they wait out a slow and uncertain recovery in China activity, the trip to India looks increasingly worthwhile. Proceeds from initial public offerings in India amounted to $3.8 billion across 172 deals as of Oct. 24, according to LSEG data.

IndiGo has retained 14 of its older Airbus A320ceo, extended leases on 36 other aircraft, and is taking 11 additional aircraft on lease starting November. The company is in talks with Pratt & Whitney for compensation over engine issues and expected payments to be staggered, he said. Close to 40 IndiGo planes are currently grounded due to older issues with Pratt & Whitney engines and the airline is yet to ascertain the number of groundings from the new problems.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

☆ Global equity funds experience notable outflows amid U.S. yield worries

Investors pulled out a net $7.46 billion from global equity funds during the week, extending outflows into a sixth straight week, data from LSEG showed. European equity funds logged about $7.39 billion worth of outflows during the week, the biggest amount since Sept. 28, 2022. Investors also divested $2.69 billion worth of U.S. equity funds but poured $2.53 billion in Asian funds. Investors also accumulated $18.3 billion worth of money market funds after $108.7 billion worth of net selling a week ago. Data covering 28,654 emerging market funds showed that investors exited EM equity funds of $2.55 billion, extending outflows into an 11th straight week.
