My father was old enough to be my grandpa, but that's what made him a great dad. By the time I was born, he'd already lived through so many ups and downs that nothing ruffled him. Born in 1911, Dad was an eighth-grade dropout who'd lived through the Great Depression, fought in World War II, and worked in New York's Garment District. AdvertisementI wish he was around to spend time with my kidsBut here's what's awful about having an old dad: He died before his grandkids got to know him. He was 81 in a veterans' hospital hospital when my first child was born.

CNN —The iconic tulle tutu worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the opening credits of “Sex and the City” proved a star lot in an auction of “iconic” fashion pieces from film, TV and celebrity wardrobes on Thursday, selling for $52,000, more than four times its high estimate. The oyster-white, three-tier tutu skirt was expected to sell for $8,000-12,000, but drew 24 bids during a sale by Julien’s Auctions in California. The tutu “became a pop culture symbol,” according to the auction house, after Parker wore it in her role as Carrie Bradshaw in the smash-hit HBO TV series. The tutu also made an appearance in the 2008 “Sex and the City” movie, in a scene in which Carrie is clearing out her closet and deciding whether to keep certain outfits. The piece was sold with a certificate of authenticity signed by Field.

And New York City has had success transforming single-use office districts, most notably Lower Manhattan's financial district, into more vibrant mixed-use places. Times Square is one of those, according to Tom Harris, president of the Times Square Alliance, which represents the district's businesses. AdvertisementAdvertisement"I'm not negating it, but certainly the opportunities south of Times Square, to the west of Times Square, are a little bit better for development of the housing stock," he said. The mix of businesses around Times Square has changed in a way that could be appealing to potential residents. Times Square lost 179 businesses during the pandemic, but has since welcomed more than 180 new businesses into the neighborhood, according to the Times Square Alliance.
