New York CNN —Kmart, once one of America’s leading discount retailers, is closing its last full-size store in the mainland United States. It also has stores in Guam and the US Virgin Islands, where it does not face competition from more successful big box stores. At the time of the 2005 merger Kmart had about 1,400 stores and Sears nearly 900 full-line US stores. Today only a handful of Sears stores remain, although it has outlets thatoperate under the Sears Hometown brands. The chain grew rapidly for several decades, claiming the discount segment of the market that big box stores now dominate.

The US once floated nuclear retaliation in 1958 if China invaded Taiwan, and stationed nuclear weapons on the island until 1974. It would essentially tell Beijing that an invasion of the island risks nuclear war, he said. "What's the benefit of reassuring Xi that our nuclear weapons are not relevant?" "So relatively low-yield nuclear weapons could destroy that amphibious force and do little to no collateral damage onshore in Taiwan." He added that threatening war — much less nuclear war — over Taiwan would be deeply unpopular at home.

Tracking Typhoon GaemiGaemi was a typhoon in the Philippine Sea Wednesday afternoon Taiwan time, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center said in its latest advisory. The typhoon had sustained wind speeds of 138 miles per hour, which would make it a Category 4 hurricane if it were in the Atlantic Ocean. Typhoon season is year-round; however, most typhoons form from early July through mid-December. Most typhoons scrape or strike places like the Philippines, Japan and Taiwan; they can also hit the Korean Peninsula, China and Vietnam, bringing damaging winds and storm surges. Typhoons have also hit U.S. territories, causing billions of dollars in devastating damage to places like Guam, which was battered by Super Typhoon Mawar in May last year.

Its unique attractions, marine preserves, and rich culture make Guam a hidden gem destination. As negotiations to end the long legal brawl between Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, and the United States reached a critical point this spring, prosecutors presented his lawyers with a choice so madcap that a person involved thought it sounded like a line from a Monty Python movie. His path to freedom, he was told, would pass through one of the two American-held islands in the blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Mr. Assange, who feared being imprisoned for the rest of his life in the United States, had long insisted on one condition for any plea deal: that he never set foot in the country. The U.S. government, in turn, had demanded that Mr. Assange plead guilty to a felony for violating the Espionage Act, which required him to appear before a federal judge. In April, a lawyer with the Justice Department’s national security division broke the impasse with a sly workaround: How about an American courtroom that wasn’t actually inside mainland America?

CNN —Even if your genetics put you at greater risk for early death, a healthy lifestyle could help you significantly combat it, according to a new study. Individuals with genetic risk could extend their lifespan by up to 5.5 years with a healthy lifestyle, the data showed. “Adherence to a healthy lifestyle could substantially attenuate the lifespan reduction for individuals with genetic susceptibility to a shorter lifespan,” Li said.
