The Communications Services Select SPDR ETF (XLC) , home of Meta, Alphabet and Disney, is doing one of the following at any given time this year: Breaking out, digesting said breakout and then breaking out again. We'll notice that the monster reversal happened a solid four months before the S & P 500 topped out in early 2022… and we can blame Meta (META) for that. Meta tailwind When META cracked back then, it took XLC with it. However, it, too, has a constructive chart pattern – a potential large base that is almost two years in length. This ETF is VERY illiquid, thus, it's not the best trading vehicle… That said, one particular holding has a similar looking pattern: Disney (DIS) .

Read previewJust seven stocks accounted for the lion's share of returns for the S&P 500 in 2023. Piper SandlerIn a January 23 note to clients, he said that only three of the seven stocks are well-positioned to keep rising, while two are in a more neutral position and another two are loaded with "red flags." When analyzing the seven stocks, he looked at fundamental traits that make them a strong buy, as well as downside risks to the companies. On fundamentals, Alphabet and Meta each scored a one and Apple came in right behind with a two. But the remaining two stocks in the group — Tesla (TSLA) and Nvidia (NVDA) had a ton of downside risks, he said.

Shares of Google closed up 5% Thursday, a day after the company announced its latest artificial intelligence model called Gemini that will compete with products from OpenAI, Microsoft and Meta . But Wells Fargo's trading desk also said the big question is what Google's monetization for Gemini looks like. "In short, I'd summarize GOOG as proving that they still have some bite." Analysts at Bank of America said Wednesday that Alphabet has been under pressure from concerns over Google's AI capabilities this year, so a "well-branded," competitive model could have upsides for its consumer search activity and Cloud enterprise sales. "We think Google has strong AI capabilities, and data suggesting that Google has best in class, proprietary, AI capabilities can be positive for the shares in 1H'24," the analysts wrote in a note.

The GMO US Quality ETF (QLTY) launched on November 12, and as its name implies, the fund seeks to offer investors exposure to so-called quality stocks through an actively managed approach. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. "At GMO, internally we also talk about intrinsic value, which is adjusting for growth and quality," Hancock said. The aerospace business manufactures and re-services airplane engines, and the continued resurgence in global demand for travel following the pandemic bodes well for the business, Hancock said. While the timing of the ETF release is not related to Grantham's call, Hancock said quality stocks are typically more defensive in a recessionary environment.

Have a concentrated portfolioHaving a concentrated portfolio means investing in a relatively small number of stocks as opposed to a larger number for the sake of diversity. Buy quality stocksSucceeding with a concentrated portfolio relies on one thing: buying quality stocks. A quality stock is a company that's able to consistently post profits and returns on capital. Apple and Alphabet would be considered consensus quality stocks, and Munger is well known for his fondness of shares of Coca-Cola, another stock traditionally classified as quality. Buy stocks with good management teamsOne element of a company that makes it "quality" is its management team.

London CNN —Microsoft and Amazon could be in hot water over apparently making it difficult for UK customers to use multiple suppliers of vital cloud services. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the country’s antitrust regulator, said Thursday it was launching an investigation into the UK cloud infrastructure services market to determine whether players were engaged in anti-competitive practices. This “cloud infrastructure” forms the foundation for how software applications, such as Gmail and Dropbox, are developed and run. According to Ofcom, last year Microsoft and AWS had a combined market share of 70-80% in the UK cloud infrastructure services market. The report also raised concerns about the software licensing practices of some cloud providers, particularly Microsoft.

The surprisingly strong economy has led investors to worry that the Fed will keep rates higher for longer, which, in turn, drove US Treasury yields higher. As stocks have declined and bond yields have soared, bond prices have tanked, causing pain for investors who bet that the Fed would curtail its rate-hiking campaign earlier this year. Treasury yields rose to their highest level in over a decade earlier this week, before edging lower on a cooldown in employment data on Wednesday. Bond prices cratered in 2022 after the Fed began drastically raising near-zero rates to tame runaway inflation. US Treasury bond prices jumped earlier this year after the collapse of several regional lenders led traders to bet that the Fed would soon ease its aggressive pace of interest rate hikes.
