In the seven most competitive Senate races, Democratic campaigns and outside groups launched 33 TV ads on abortion just in the last week, according to the ad-tracking firm AdImpact. Just one Republican ad, a Spanish-language spot from an outside group targeting Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen of Nevada, mentioned abortion. Some Republicans warned that the party's failure to counter abortion attacks cost them crucial seats that year. In Arizona, Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake has softened her position on abortion rights. An Israeli-designed radar system encircling the island can detect passersby, in low visibility, from half a mile away. Often described as "butlers with badges," the Indian Creek police force is unlike most of its counterparts. The Indian Creek radar can detect objects on the water and use artificial intelligence to classify them according to the risk they pose. With the new security system, the Indian Creek police appear to have turbocharged their enforcement of regulations in the surrounding waters. I have to make a confession: Kamala Harris had a much stronger start than I expected. She appears competent, in command and she is connecting to voters — everything she wasn’t when she ran for president five years ago. Gail Collins: Bret! My husband, Dan Collins, died this month. By the time he passed, Dan had been sedated for a while, and there’s a small controversy between me and my sisters over what was said the last time he and I actually exchanged words. It was either “I love you” or Dan’s claim that he was the one who ordered cans of salmon and vegetable for our dog. One of the great joys of a long marriage is how the personal and pragmatic moosh together. We married in 1970, when we were living in Amherst, graduate students studying government at the University of Massachusetts.

CNN —Two shots a year of a drug currently used to treat HIV infections were dramatically effective at preventing infections in a study among young women and adolescent girls in Africa. The twice-yearly injection of the drug lenacapavir can provide total protection against HIV infections, demonstrating 100% efficacy in Phase 3 trial data released by drugmaker Gilead and published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. The twice-a-year injections of lenacapavir could add another option at preventing HIV infections to the toolbox. So talented, qualified Democrats would have time to launch their candidacies. Bret: What’s past is past. In the aftermath of Katrina, the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act of 2006 was passed. However, development and implementation of pet evacuation and sheltering plans during disasters remains widely insufficient, if it is even addressed at all. At least 15 states do not have any provisions for the evacuation, rescue and recovery of pets during disasters, according to Michigan State University’s Animal Law and History Web Center. More commonly, pet owners will sneak back into active evacuation sites to rescue their pets, risking injury and even death. Allowing pet owners to evacuate their animals may prevent significant psychological distress and can strengthen the emotional resiliency of evacuees.

Researchers and activists in the trenches of the long fight against H.I.V. got a rare piece of exciting news this week: Results from a large clinical trial in Africa showed that a twice-yearly injection of a new antiviral drug gave young women total protection from the virus. “I got cold shivers,” said Dr. Linda-Gail Bekker, an investigator in the trial of the drug, lenacaprivir, describing the startling sight of a line of zeros in the data column for new infections. and AIDS in South Africa, said it was “the best news ever.”The randomized controlled trial, called Purpose 1, was conducted in Uganda and South Africa. It tested whether the every-six-months injection of lenacaprivir, made by Gilead Sciences, would provide better protection against H.I.V.

I know we’ll want to talk about the Hunter Biden trial. The long and short of it is that Texan Latinos, once reliably Democratic, are turning against Joe Biden on account of the border chaos. To the Editor:Re “We’re Suddenly Living in a ‘My Wife Did It’ Moment,” by Gail Collins and Bret Stephens (The Conversation, May 21):Mr. Stephens goes on at length about why Justice Samuel Alito’s wife has “the constitutional right” to express a “Stop the Steal” opinion by hanging a flag upside-down in the Alitos’ front yard, as well as “a moral right” to express her opinion independently of her Supreme Court justice husband. Then, when Ms. Collins challenges the propriety of a political symbol at the home of a justice who might someday have to decide on that very election’s validity, Mr. Stephens demurs with a mild “OK.”Mr. Stephens’s argument is deeply disturbing. Our Supreme Court justices are expected to maintain not just the reality of no conflicts of interest that might influence their rulings, but also the “appearance” of no such conflicts. To neighbors and now the nation, the flag made it appear that Justice Alito believes Donald Trump’s lies about a stolen election, and thus would rule in favor of Mr. Trump in related cases. Blaming his wife makes a sham of his own responsibility not to appear political.
