"Yes, of course, military actions are always a tragedy," Putin told the virtual G20 meeting called by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "And of course, we should think about how to stop this tragedy," Putin said. Putin used the word "war" to describe the conflict instead of the current Kremlin term of "special military operation". "I understand that this war, and the death of people, cannot but shock," Putin said, before setting out the Russian case that Ukraine had persecuted people in eastern Ukraine.

In his opening speech, Modi invited the chair of the African Union, Azali Assoumani, to take his seat at as a permanent member of the grouping as other leaders applauded and looked on. “Today, as the president of G20, India calls upon the world to come together to transform the global trust deficit into one of trust and reliance,” Modi said during his opening remarks. Modi has previously spoken of his intention to include the African Union in the grouping. "It is very important for Argentina to be in BRICS," Lula said in a live broadcast on social media as he attends the bloc's summit in South Africa. Argentina, whose largest trade partner is Brazil, has previously said it intended to join the BRICS bloc. India's rate of emissions intensity - the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions emitted for every unit increase of gross domestic product (GDP) - fell by 33% from 2005 to 2019, officials privy to the preparations of the Third National Communication (TNC) report said. India's average rate of reduction in emissions increased to 3% annually in the period 2016-2019, from just about 1.5% in the period 2014-2016. The progress made on reducing emissions intensity should help India avert pressure by developed nations to stop using coal, the second official said. Recently, India has also been trying to promote green hydrogen, manufactured by splitting water molecules using renewable energy.
