The Opinion contributing writer Megan Stack has a gift for high school graduates who struggled academically or who feel like life is passing them by. In this audio essay, Stack lays out an optimistic vision for the late bloomers and poor performers, arguing that this stage of life doesn’t have to define a person’s future and that there are many paths to happiness and success. Honesty Butler was not planning to go to college, let alone leave her home state of New York. Art school was too expensive, so she began to give up on the idea of higher education entirely. Butler had never played a team sport, beyond a brief stint on the track team, but from the first practice, she was hooked. requirement, so Butler was suddenly motivated to keep her grades up — even in math. Now, Butler, 19, is more than 1,200 miles from home in Fort Scott, Kan., where she is preparing for her second season playing collegiate flag football at Fort Scott Community College.

But I have always thought of that as racial preferences the way they should have been, merely additive around the margins. I was hired straight out of my doctoral program for a tenure-track job at an Ivy League university in its august linguistics department. Plus, I was brought on to represent a subfield within linguistics — sociolinguistics — that has never been my actual specialty. At the time I was not very politicized, and I assumed that my race had merely been a background bonus to help me get hired. I had been hired by white people who, quite innocently, thought they were doing the right thing by bringing a Black person onto the faculty.

At Memorial Pathway Academy, a high school for at-risk students and new immigrants in Garland, Texas, more than 80 percent of students get a job after graduation. Nationally, nearly 40 percent of high school graduates do not immediately enroll in college. That represents about 2 percent of all Black, Hispanic or Native American students in four-year colleges. The affirmative action decision could still have broader ripple effects. Some experts worry it will send a message to Black and Hispanic students that they are not wanted on college campuses, or push them to more troubled schools, like for-profit institutions.

So these elite places become these little islands where rich people pass down their advantages to their kids. Like everyone else, by today’s standards, I wouldn’t qualify for any of the elite schools. And yet in those days, the University of Chicago, where I ended up going, admitted 70 percent of the applicants. The process is not only divisive but doesn’t give people later in life a fair chance to alter the trajectory of their life. They should look at their grades, they should look at their test scores, but they should also look at their resilience.
