An employee assembles a fuel cell system in the module final assembly at Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC, GM and Honda's fuel cell joint venture in Brownstown, Michigan. BROWNSTOWN, Mich. – General Motors and Honda Motor have begun commercial production of hydrogen fuel cell systems in a step toward offering alternative zero-emissions solutions beyond battery-electric vehicles. The fuel cell systems are produced through a 50-50 joint venture between the automakers at an $85 million facility in suburban Detroit. The companies, which are marketing and selling products separately, are calling the "large-scale" production at the joint venture the first of its kind in the U.S. And now we can start to move it into these segments where before it wasn't really feasible," Charlie Freese, executive director of GM's "Hydrotec" fuel cell products, told CNBC during an event at the plant.

The proposed tax credit, 45V, is meant to turbocharge the production of low-emissions hydrogen. "The IRA's section 45V production tax credit is the most generous clean hydrogen subsidy in the world," Jesse Jenkins, professor of macro-scale energy systems at Princeton University, told CNBC. John Macdougall | Afp | Getty ImagesThe adjudication of the hydrogen tax credit has become about more than just the hydrogen tax credit, too. The amount of the hydrogen tax credit, which is available for 10 years, depends on the emissions generated in making hydrogen. If hydrogen is produced without releasing any carbon emissions, the tax credit is maxed out at $3 per kilogram of hydrogen.

TOKYO, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Japan will subsidize hydrogen fuel cell systems and other equipment to the tune of 30.6 billion yen ($205 million), the Nikkei business daily reported on Sunday. The government's decision is aimed at supporting the development of components for electric aircraft with reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the newspaper said. The trade ministry is expected to present the policy at a working group of the ministry's council, it said. The government will allocate 17.3 billion yen for the development of hydrogen fuel cell systems for aircraft, and 13.3 billion yen for the development of fuel-efficient engine control systems, the Nikkei said. The planned investment was one billion euros more than earmarked in its previous investment plan for 2021-2024, the statement added. Bosch expects one in five new trucks weighing six metric tons or more would feature fuel-cell powertrains by 2030, it said. Bosch said production of its fuel cell power module - a fuel cell system generating electricity in vehicles from hydrogen, primarily used in commercial long-distance applications - has begun in its Stuttgart-Feuerbach plant in Germany and in Chongqing, China. Daimler Truck (DTGGe.DE) plans to bring a hydrogen truck to market in the second half of the decade, forming a joint venture with Volvo (VOLVb.ST) to develop the zero-emissions technology. Automaker Stellantis said this year it would begin deliveries in Europe of its first medium-sized vans powered by hydrogen fuel cells by the end of 2021.

TOKYO, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Japan's Honda Motor Co (7267.T) said it will start producing a new hydrogen fuel cell system jointly developed with General Motors Co (GM.N) this year and gradually step up sales this decade, in a bid to expand its hydrogen business. The Japanese carmaker is seeking to expand the use of its new system not only for its own fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), but also commercial vehicles such as heavy trucks, as stationary power stations and in construction machinery. Honda will start production of the hydrogen fuel cell system through its joint venture with GM this year, Honda senior managing executive director Shinji Aoyama told reporters during a company event in Tokyo. With the "next-generation" system, the company aims to more than double durability compared with its older fuel cell system and to bring costs down by two-thirds. That would likely lead to a divergence in trucks using batteries and those running on fuel cells, he added.
MILAN, Dec 23 (Reuters) - Stellantis (STLA.MI) has entered exclusive talks with France's Faurecia (EPED.PA) and Michelin (MICP.PA) to buy a "substantial" stake in their Symbio joint venture, a fuel cell system maker for hydrogen mobility, the three companies said on Friday. Stellantis, the world third-largest carmaker, launched hydrogen-powered mid-size vans late last year and aims to expand its hydrogen offer to large vans in Europe in 2024 and in the U.S. in 2025, "while further exploring opportunities for heavy-duty trucks". Stellantis entry "will accelerate and globalize Symbio's growth," Faurecia's CEO Patrick Koller said. The transaction, for which no financial details were provided, is expected to be finalised in the first half on next year, the three companies said in their statement. REUTERS/Mark Blinch/File PhotoSept 18 (Reuters) - Hydrogen fuel cell maker Loop Energy (LPEN.TO) said on Sunday that its latest cell system can deliver better fuel economy than a diesel engine at current price levels. Hydrogen fuel cells have faced two challenges for broad adoption: they have so far been less efficient than diesel and fuelling infrastructure in Europe is virtually non-existent. "This brings the future forward," Loop Energy Chief Executive Ben Nyland told Reuters. Nyland said that Loop Energy aims to provide the fuel cell system to startup truck makers and as part of hydrogen powertrains provided to big truck makers by major suppliers. The company's biggest shareholder is U.S. engine maker Cummins (CMI.N), which holds a more than 20% stake in Loop Energy.
