In this article SAVEULCCJBLU Follow your favorite stocks CREATE FREE ACCOUNTJetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines airplanes proceed to gates after landing at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey on May 30, 2024. Airlines flooded the U.S. with flights this year, driving down fares particularly in the domestic market, where low-cost carriers concentrate, and weighing on carriers' revenue while costs have gone up. Spirit Airlines , JetBlue Airways and Frontier Airlines last posted annual profits in 2019, while larger carriers have returned to profitability. Now, some of those same airlines are dialing back their growth plans and deferring deliveries of new aircraft. Some airlines, like Frontier, have been active in sale-leasebacks, in which they sell planes to generate cash and lease them back.

A Spirit Airlines aircraft undergoes operations in preparation for departure at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas, on Feb. 12, 2024. Spirit Airlines said Tuesday it would post a wider-than-expected loss for the last quarter because of revenue that came in short of its expectations. Spirit expects to report an adjusted loss of between $160 million and $173 million for the three months ended June 30, compared with a previous estimate for a loss of no more than $145 million. Spirit said non-ticket revenue, which accounts for the myriad fees long associated with its rock-bottom fares, came in "several dollars lower than anticipated" per passenger. "As the Company progresses on its transformation strategy, it anticipates that over time it will be able to drive improvement in total revenue per passenger segment," Spirit said.

With nothing commercial to show from Boeing, which usually has its 777X and Max test jets on display, all eyes will be on European rival Airbus. AdvertisementThe XLR plane is the longest-ranged option in the A321neo family, which has outsold Boeing's 737 since 2019, when two fatal crashes grounded the plane's Max variants. According to Airbus, the XLR is uniquely equipped for long-haul flying, thanks to an extra rear center fuel tank that helps the narrowbody fly up to 5,400 miles (11 hours) nonstop. AdvertisementThe premium seating offers lie-flat beds typical to what customers find on long-haul widebody flights, and is likely to be the norm on long-haul XLRs. "Even well-established city pairs such as London-Miami or Sydney-Kuala Lumpur will benefit from the year-round sweet spot the XLR offers airlines," Airbus marketing specialist Ludek Jando said in September 2023.

Further, the carry-on bag restrictions vary slightly at 24 x 16 x 10 inches and 22 x 18 x 10 inches, respectively. These rules are found on the airline's websites, and the same goes for other global ULCCs like Ryanair and Allegiant Air. AdvertisementPlus, I'm not convinced that Frontier and Spirit's recent addition of "premium" perks will give either a competitive edge. Frontier and Spirit offer 28 inches of pitch, while coach seats on all three mainline carriers start at 30 inches. AdvertisementAmerican Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines recognized the budget competition years ago and created their own version of a cheap ticket: basic economy. ULCCs are not always cheaper once you do the mathIn my experience, mainline tickets are sometimes cheaper than Frontier or Spirit. Spirit has dropped all change and cancel fees, and Frontier is adding business-class-like seats to lure in more premium travelers.

A Spirit Airlines aircraft undergoes operations in preparation for departure at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas, on Feb. 12, 2024. Spirit Airlines is doing away with both change and cancellation fees, effective immediately, days after Frontier's similar announcement, part of an overhaul of the country's biggest discount carriers' longtime strategy. Ancillary revenue routinely surpasses those airlines' ticket prices. Most larger rivals such as Delta , American , Alaska and United got rid of change fees during the pandemic except for the cheapest, most restrictive tickets. Along with getting rid of change fees, Frontier also announced Friday that it will start offering bundles that include add-on options such as early boarding and checked baggage that they previously offered a la carte.

But the budget airline on Tuesday launched a new add-on to get more room at the front of its tightly-packed planes — with no middle seat neighbor. On flights starting April 10, Frontier will offer UpFront Plus in the first two rows of its Airbus planes, where it will block the sale of the middle seat. Those seats will also include four to five inches more legroom compared with most of the seats on the planes, an airline spokeswoman said. Fellow budget airline Spirit offers the "Big Front Seat" in its Airbus cabins. The new Frontier option isn't a new seat, but is instead spaced differently than most of the plane.

DENVER (AP) — Frontier Airlines has settled a lawsuit filed by female pilots who accused the airline of discriminating against pregnant or breastfeeding employees. In the agreement announced Tuesday, Frontier will let pilots pump breast milk in the cockpit during “noncritical phases” of flights. The Denver-based airline also agreed to let pilots who are breastfeeding reduce their flying time and treat pregnancy and breastfeeding the same as other medical conditions if they make pilots unable to fly. In the case involving Denver-based pilots, the airline also agreed to comply with a current union agreement letting pregnant pilots fly if they have medical approval. The airline also agreed to continue to let breastfeeding pilots reduce their schedules to 50 hours of flying per month, and to update and make available a list of lactation facilities at airports.

In the letter, the partners said they have spoken with potential strategic and financial buyers who have "indicated interest in participating in a company-initiated review process." A Jana spokesman declined to comment and a representative for Frontier did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In the letter Jana said Frontier's lagging stock price is linked to the fact the company hasn't been able to attract new investors since exiting bankruptcy in 2021.

A Frontier Airlines airplane taxis past a Spirit Airlines aircraft at Indianapolis International Airport in Indianapolis, Indiana. Southwest Airlines , for example, last month offered one-way fares of $29 for flights early in the morning or at night, just one example of airline discounting for off-peak periods. Airlines have scheduled a record 259.8 million seats for domestic flights in the fourth quarter, up nearly 8% from last year, on 1.86 million flights, up 6% from 2022, according to aviation-data firm Cirium. United Airlines said it expects to fly 5.9 million passengers from Nov. 17 to Nov. 29, up 13% from last year and 5% more than 2019. That means they could increase their inventory of cheaper basic economy fares during weaker demand periods, or raise fares when demand is high for premium seats.

Tell Frontier Airlines how much you owe in student loans and you could be one of 100 lucky winners who will receive an airline mile for every dollar you owe, up to 100,000 miles, the airline announced last week. Student loan borrowers have until August 27 to enter the sweepstakes through Frontier's website. To enter, all you need is a student debt balance and a free Frontier Miles account. It's not as exciting as having your student loan balance forgiven, but the maximum prize of 100,000 miles could help you save on a budget getaway. The contest comes just as federal student loan borrowers gear up to begin making payments on their loans again for the first time in over three years.

The subscription offers unlimited travel throughout Frontier's network, but only if a seat is available. Frontier Airlines' new "all-you-can-fly" GoWild Pass has officially taken off. In June, Wall Street Journal Reporter Dawn Gilbertson used the Colorado-based carrier's new flight subscription, which markets unlimited travel to anywhere in Frontier's network. Moreover, there are several caveats to "unlimited" travel. However, she also realized "unlimited" travel can actually be very limiting.

"We see Frontier's advanced market commitment as an important demand signal boost for the carbon removal market. Frontier Airlines is selling an "all-you-can-fly" pass starting this summer, called "GoWild!" The pass offers customers unlimited flights to all of Frontier's destinations for five to 12 months. on Tuesday, an "all-you-can-fly" program that Frontier customers can purchase for as little as $399 for a five-month summer pass to $1,299 for an annual membership, according to a press release. The summer pass begins May 2 and ends Sept. 30 for a limited-time price of $399 per year, though will retail for a regular price of $999. Meanwhile, JetBlue Airways previously offered an "all-you-can-jet" pass in 2010 that gave buyers unlimited flights for 30 days for $699, with a cheaper offering of $499 that excluded Friday and Sunday travel.
What are credit card and bank rewards points worth? One great feature of the program is that all points are equal, so any account that earns Membership Rewards points has access to transfer partners. If you're a Bank of America Preferred Rewards customer, you'll earn 25% to 75% more points, depending on how much you have on deposit, but your rewards points are still worth 1 cent apiece. You can transfer points from Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, and Citi ThankYou to JetBlue, but the ratio varies depending on the rewards program. However, those miles expire after 36 months regardless of your account activity, so only transfer miles when you have immediate plans to redeem them.
Kevin McCarthy kept flailing Thursday as 20 House conservatives torched another speaker vote. Republican Rep. Josh Gottheimer, who was once a thorn in House Democrats' side, said the GOP could be in for chaos if talks could on their current trajectory. Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas previously compared bringing back the procedural maneuver to governing "with a gun to your head." According to multiple reports, McCarthy has now agreed to let a single House Republican wield that power. This almost certainly means McCarthy would need to rely on House Democrats, a scenario that has doomed past GOP speakers.
Frontier Airlines has scrapped its telephone customer service line. Frontier said this month that a chat service "reduced negotiation" and dealt with more cases. An airline spokesperson told CNBC it had cut its telephone service to help customers get "the information they need as expeditiously and efficiently as possible." "We are supporting higher labor rates in the voice channel, and we're limited to this one-to-one interaction," he said, adding that a chat agent could handle three queries at once. Frontier's move follows a summer of travel chaos which laid bare the lack of customer service offered by many airlines.
