The Napoleon of Your Living Room

Gary Friedman hates meetings. A 66-year-old with apparently limitless energy and a perpetual tan, Mr. Friedman is the chief executive of RH, one of the country’s largest high-end furniture sellers, and he never holds meetings. That’s a typical stretch for Mr. Friedman’s adventures with his architecture and design team, a group of about 20 executives overseeing one of the priciest expansions in the history of American retail. The company is doubling the number of stores, called “galleries” in RH speak, with 35 new ones in the works. He wants to forge a brand that is so ubiquitous — RH restaurants, RH hotels, RH clothing — that its impact is global.

They expose decades of American corporate philosophy gone awry. A good American company isn’t just a vehicle for financial returns; it is first and foremost an employer, a contributor to economic and/or technological innovation, and a source of US power. But it’s clear that what Boeing — and the entire American corporate body politic — needs is nothing short of a philosophical counterrevolution. Over these three decades of plenty for Boeing’s shareholders, the company’s staff was asked to penny-pinch. Boeing’s stock cratered, and France’s Airbus , a rival once colloquially known as “Scare Bus,” started to eat the American company’s lunch .

MILTON FRIEDMAN: The Last Conservative, by Jennifer BurnsIn writing her new biography of the Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman, known throughout his long life for his cheerful endorsement of deregulation and free markets, Jennifer Burns certainly had her work cut out for her. “As he increasingly came to symbolize a political movement,” she writes, “the nuance and complexity of his ideas was lost.”But even Burns has to admit that this attention to “nuance and complexity” was something that Friedman did a lot to discourage. The principles underlying such intricate cooperation were “really very simple,” he said. At the University of Chicago, where Friedman spent most of his teaching life, he edged out the leftist scholars clustered in the Cowles Commission for Economic Research, shrewdly getting the Rockefeller Foundation to pull its funding from the commission and finance Friedman’s workshop instead. Charismatic in the classroom, Friedman didn’t just teach students; he created converts.

But nowhere does he mention the deep visceral hatred of Hamas and associated groups toward Israel. It was always apparent that not long after the Oct. 7 massacre Israel would lose the public relations war. Israel does not deliberately target civilians. No serious defender of Israel’s response to the Oct. 7 massacres argues that the lives of Israeli children are worth more than those of Gazan children. Hamas would be considered “heroes” in the eyes of most of the world and its leadership would have attained political legitimacy.

Stephen F. GladstoneShaker Heights, OhioTo the Editor:President Biden has responded magnificently to these ghastly circumstances since the Oct. 7 onslaught. He has responded with courage, wisdom and inspirational leadership — for all of us who reject solving problems through bloodshed and blind rage. Mr. Friedman articulates why a ground invasion of Gaza will only empower Israel’s enemies and ultimately lead to even worse conditions for Israel. Benjamin Netanyahu will need to subvert the desire for revenge felt throughout Israel and embrace the path to a Palestinian state, ending the expansion of Jewish settlements. For thousands of people, the decisions of these leaders will determine whether they live or die.

Others have said they don’t want their work being used to train AI models, which could then be used to imitate them. Amazon removed the fake books being sold under Friedman’s name and said its policies prohibit such imitation. Author Jane Friedman found several books being sold under her name on Amazon, only she didn't write them — she suspects artificial intelligence did. The Authors Guild has been working with Amazon since this past winter to address the issue of books written by AI, Rasenberger said. And, she said, companies and publishers should continue investing in creative work made by humans, even if AI appears more convenient.

The U.S. Economy’s Lost Decade - The New York Times

President Obama did pass what media reports insistently called a “massive” fiscal stimulus, but it was in fact far too small, given the size of the financial shock. That’s not 20/20 hindsight; I was tearing my hair out over the plan’s inadequacy in real time. Or they didn’t want to work, maybe because the improving quality of video games was keeping them at home. OK, but before I simply declare that inadequate government stimulus led to a lost decade for the U.S. economy, I need to address one objection from economic theory. Conversely, if the economy persistently has excessive unemployment, the hypothesis says that we should see ever-falling inflation, perhaps eventually leading to deflation.

Jerusalem CNN —On Thursday evening, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced a last-minute televised statement by Benjamin Netanyahu. But instead, despite the tens of thousands of protesters, the increase in refusals to serve by military reservists and even a very public and harsh criticism of the judicial overhaul plan by US President Joe Biden, Netanyahu refused to back down. He saved his harshest criticisms for two groups: the demonstrators on the streets and the military reservists who are refusing to serve in protest. “Citizens of Israel, all of the remarks about the destruction of democracy are simply absurd,” Netanyahu said. Should it pass, it will be the first aspect of the judicial overhaul to do so.

By one metric, Nasdaq paid around what Thoma Bravo spent on creating Adenza through the merger of two software firms, the sources familiar with the deal said. Nasdaq also hopes to cut overlapping costs, which would boost profitability and make the deal look cheaper, one of the sources said. With Adenza, Nasdaq's recurring revenues, which investors like for their predictability, will comprise around 77% of overall revenues, up from 71%. A director at one of Nasdaq's largest shareholders, whose firm supports the Adenza deal, said there were few good companies left that could be synergistic to Nasdaq. One of the sources said once Nasdaq also cuts out costs, the multiple will be closer to the mid-20s.

Nasdaq futureproofs itself, but at 2021 prices

NEW YORK, June 12 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Nasdaq (NDAQ.O) is catapulting itself into the future - but paying yesterday’s high prices to get there. She pursued this one with gusto, though: Adenza wasn’t for sale when Nasdaq started wooing Thoma Bravo, say people familiar with the situation. Little wonder Nasdaq shares plunged over 10% on Monday. The U.S.-based exchange operator would pay just under $5.8 billion in cash and the rest in new Nasdaq shares, leaving Thoma Bravo with a 14.9% stake. Nasdaq shares had fallen 9.4% by 10.00am EST on June 12.

To the Editor:Re “On Immigration, Biden Should Out-Trump Trump,” by Thomas L. Friedman (column, May 17):Three cheers for Mr. Friedman’s lucid discussion of the murky topic of immigration. 2) We have a moral responsibility to be as generous as we can in welcoming people from around the world who come to us because of intolerable circumstances where they live. 3) The number of people in such intolerable circumstances vastly exceeds our ability to absorb all of them. 4) Because of this, we need to put limits on the number of needy people we accept into our country. 5) The limits we place should strike a reasonable balance between our self-interest and our compassion for those who are suffering.
A flawed but useful economic model for a bleak age

Modern Monetary Theory, which endorses unlimited government spending, was all the rage during the years of ultra-low interest rates. John Cochrane’s fiscal theory fits the bill. Cochrane, a senior fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, recently published “The Fiscal Theory of the Price Level”. Not only are high interest rates incapable of arresting inflation, fiscal theory suggests they actually make the problem worse. Nor do bondholders operate with rational expectations, as fiscal theory suggests.
