CNN —There are a variety of methods golfers can call upon to soothe their anxiety in the face of a dreaded playoff. Three beers and eight nerve-wracking holes later, the 27-year-old stamped his ticket to his first ever PGA Tour event. Nick Bienz works at Golf Galaxy, has never played any pga tour sanctioned event, he is so nervous he’s pounding beers. He had attempted to qualify for events before, including several on the Korn Ferry Tour – the PGA Tour’s developmental circuit – but had never been so close to getting over the line. “I don’t remember hitting the putt,” Bienz added to the PGA Tour.

To the Editor:Re “The Day My Old Church Canceled Me,” by David French (column, June 10):Mr. French’s discussion of the day his church canceled him is a stunning exposition of the extreme polarization in our society. What has happened to the right to think differently, to disagree and to engage in reasoned discourse? To the Editor:I enjoy reading David French’s thoughtful columns even though I, an atheist, don’t always agree with him. He has helped teach me to keep my heart open to those I might consider political opponents. So I was heartbroken to read his recent piece about the attacks and abandonment his family suffered at their former church.

If the American experiment finally decides to call it quits, how might a national breakup begin? Perhaps California moves toward secession after the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down the state’s strict gun control measures. Or Texas rebels when disputes over abortion laws grow deadly and the state’s National Guard remains loyal to the second Texan republic. These scenarios are not of my own creation; they all appear in recent nonfiction books warning of an American schism. We never learn exactly who or what started the new American civil war, or what ideologies, if any, are competing for power.

THE HUNTER, by Tana FrenchFour years ago in these pages, the critic Janet Maslin published a guide to “the essential Tana French.” For some of French’s fans, all the novels are essential. Unpredictability and a refusal to be boring are part of French’s talent, and they make the books (almost) as much fun to debate as they are to read. Instead, a rebellious, preteen outcast named Trey Reddy enlists his help in finding her missing brother. In “The Hunter,” Cal, two years older, is still living in Ardnakelty. Cal and Lena want Trey to stay well clear, but she has different ideas.

Pretending that Christian enthusiasm for Donald Trump is just some kind of mass psychosis or mob mentality may allow some Christians like Mr. French to feel better about themselves and their churches. But they need to confront a deeper truth: There is something compromised at the core of the white American Christian tradition. Mr. Trump is amoral and irreligious. The only explanation is that Mr. Trump and evangelicals have a symbiotic relationship that puts both in positions of power and influence. Andrew J. SparbergOceanside, N.Y.To the Editor:This column reminded me of when Donald Trump said: “I consider it a great badge of honor.

Standing before friends and family, Dr. Partridge first unwrapped a Movado watch from Mr. Hilbrant-Partridge. Then, Dr. Partridge suddenly walked out to retrieve his own surprise for his fiancé: a golden retriever puppy. “I thought I was having a dream,” said Mr. Hilbrant-Partridge, 33, the senior director for customer experience at Beam, a wellness company. The two, who live in Cambridge, Mass., had longed for a second dog to join their older golden retriever, Nahla, for quite some time — especially Mr. Hilbrant-Partridge. The breeder not only expedited Dr. Partridge’s request, but also deflected Mr. Hilbrant-Partridge’s occasional queries concerning the availability of new puppies.

CNN —Mattel says it is conducting a nationwide job search for a “Chief Uno player.” The salary: $277 an hour. The toy company is hiring someone to promote the release of their new game, Uno Quatro. Uno Quatro is a new version of Uno that combines connecting four tiles in a row, as in Connect 4, with the classic Uno feature of matching numbers and colors. Starting September 13, the Chief Uno player will teach players to play the game and participate in livestreams and interviews. An eye-catching five figure position to play Uno for four weeks can accomplish just that.

Opinion | The Battle Over Free Speech on Campus

To the Editor:Re “There Are Promising Signs for Free Speech on Campuses,” by David French (column, April 17):I hope Mr. French’s column is correct. Freedom of speech, as provided for in the First Amendment, is a bedrock principle of our constitutional democracy. Its meaning and significance for a free society cannot be misunderstood or minimized. Individuals who profess to believe in free speech demonstrate their commitment to the principle not merely when they support the right of a speaker with whom they agree but also when they show that support for a speaker whose viewpoint is antithetical to their own. I tell my brother to grab an empty Mountain Dew bottle from his truck so we can bring back some spring water. We’re at the Lincoln memorial. Not the one in Washington, the other one—the 344-acre Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park—an hour south of Louisville. This Lincoln memorial is older by a decade than the Henry Bacon-designed monument in Washington, but it gets only 250,000 visitors a year. The National Park Service estimates eight million people annually drop in on Daniel Chester French’s Lincoln sculpture overlooking the National Mall.
The theatrical release comes after the project appeared last month at New York’s premier LGBTQ film festival, NewFest. The film, which is loosely based on Bratton’s life, focuses on the challenges the main character, Ellis French, experiences as a young gay Black man during the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” era. However, in describing his tumultuous family life, Bratton recalled the time his mother invited him to film his sister’s school graduation. Prior to “The Inspection,” Bratton directed other LGBTQ projects, including the 2019 documentary “Pier Kids,” about queer and transgender youths living at Manhattan’s Christopher Street Pier. Bratton described Union as a dedicated ally for the LGBTQ community — who revived his mom for the world to see.

Like many ingredient-obsessed cooks, I hit the farmers’ market once or twice a week. I eat my brussels sprouts and squash in October, my asparagus and rhubarb in June, and not a whole lot beyond potatoes and onions in February. Yet when I start dreaming about the most delicious dishes I’ve ever eaten, Mrs. Ruby’s molten, cheesy artichoke dip, made with canned artichokes and topped with a spiky crown of French’s fried onions, is one of the first things that springs to mind. Mrs. Ruby was a family friend when I was growing up, and while she admitted she wasn’t a great cook, she could wield a can opener like a Jedi master. She served the dip over a can of Sterno, and by the end of the night the bottom was crusted and browned, like the prized tahdig on a pot of Persian rice.
